fundamentalist FLDS sect in Utah losing members, shrinking, going to public schools

Tonia Tewell, the director of Holding Out Help, estimated that she has helped a further 150 people leave the FLDS in the last year and that things are changing rapidly in the twin towns, now that many people are leaving the religion but choosing to stay in the area.

They go to mainstream public schools, instead of being home-schooled mainly in religion as FLDS members are. And they shop at ordinary stores, in St George, or the few outside stores, such as a Subway sandwich shop and Dollar General store that have opened in town recently. FLDS members, by contrast, get most of their food supplies from church-controlled storehouses, which are at the center of the alleged church-operated federal food stamp scam.

--!!

There are no official figures, but FLDS members in the twin towns are estimated to be below 10,000 and getting fewer by the year as many leave.

“People are getting a lot more help these days from family members who have already left. And I get word from inside that someone wants to leave, especially young people, and I drop phones off in the bushes around town and people contact me and I help them,” said Tewell.

Many FLDS members are “at the end of their tether”, after years of the church leaders imposing strict doctrine by splitting families up and sending members outside the community, sometimes for years, to repent, if leaders such as Lyle Jeffs deemed they had offended the church in some way, she said.

“The community is absolutely paralyzed with Lyle in jail,” she said.

But she sees many other positive signs of change in the community. An ex-FLDS woman in Hildale has started up a women’s group that regularly has a few dozen at meetings and attracts 100 or more women when it holds special events.

Kids form human arrow to point police chopper toward suspects on the run

Source: Cnn

For one group of kids in a small village outside London, an afternoon meant to be spent hunting Easter eggs suddenly turned into a thrilling hunt for burglars.

The children and their families had gathered together on Good Friday for an Easter egg hunt in a field in Capel, located in Surrey.
But an intrusion at a building nearby brought a dramatic police helicopter chase right to them, Surrey police said.

With a chopper buzzing overhead and two men suddenly racing across the field, those in the group quickly realized they were witnessing a police pursuit. The kids dropped to the ground and lay out in an arrow-shaped formation to point the authorities the right way.

"The children quickly formed an arrow on the ground in the middle of a plowed field to guide the helicopter in the direction of the fleeing pair," a statement from police said. "The helicopter crew relayed this information to officers on the ground and a short time later two men were arrested."

Son spots "funny looking dog" on the porch

?w=625&h=352&crop=1

A Florida family had just sat down to fill their bellies when an unexpected guest came by to eat — an endangered panther.

“We were all having dinner. Myself, my father, mother, my two sons, and my daughter, and one of my sons [Phillip Jr.] yells out, ‘Hey, look at that funny looking dog!’ We all jumped up and the panther was just sitting there right outside the window,” Phil Hendra Sr. told The Daily News.

The Florida man said the panther just hung around for a while before it decided to hit the road.

“It laid down like a regular house cat, got back up, strolled to the side of the deck, looked back at us a few times and walked away. We were not scared at all. The panther looked so calm and comfortable — we were too,” he said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are calling on anyone who has had a similar sighting to report it on their website.

The sight won’t be forgotten anytime soon for this family.

“It was just an awesome sight for three generations of the Hendra family to see,” Hendra said.

Racist anchor wendy bell fired for her stupid racist comments

In the post, Bell used her psychic powers to determine the race and familial situation of the perpetrators of a recent crime:

“You needn’t be a criminal profiler to draw a mental sketch of the killers who broke so many hearts two weeks ago Wednesday. … They are young black men, likely in their teens or in their early 20s. They have multiple siblings from multiple fathers and their mothers work multiple jobs. These boys have been in the system before. They’ve grown up there. They know the police. They’ve been arrested.”

_____

Bell also cited an example of a thing that gave her “hope”–a young black man who did not appear to be a criminal:

But there is HOPE. and Joe and I caught a glimpse of it Saturday night. A young, African American teen hustling like nobody’s business at a restaurant we took the boys to over at the Southside Works. This child stacked heavy glass glasses 10 high and carried three teetering towers of them in one hand with plates puled high in the other. He wiped off the tables. Tended to the chairs. Got down on his hands and knees to pick up the scraps that had fallen to the floor. And he did all this with a rhythm like a dancer with a satisfied smile on his face. And I couldn’t take my eyes off him. He’s going to Make it.

This is not a “racist” statement, it is an obviously racist statement. But it’s the kind of racist statement that people don’t feel like “bad people” for making. Like complimenting a black person on how “articulate” they are, or congratulating an ethnic-looking person who was born here on how well they speak English. Being surprised, or “hopeful” about a black person doing their job and not being a criminal, is insulting and racist. Because it shows that you expect the opposite.

I imagine that Bell would not appreciate it if every time she met a person of color, they congratulated her on the real good job she did not burning a cross on their lawn or being a serial killer.

The killers havent bee identified. Notice her use of "boys" and "child" her posts are racist on sooo many levels

100-year-old woman kicked out of California apartment for being too loud, messy

100-year-old woman accused of being too loud and messy has two weeks to find a new home after a California court sided with her landlord, slapping the woman with an eviction notice.

Boisterous spats between Evelyn Heller and her adult daughter sparked the devastating landlord-tenant battle over a Coachella Valley apartment, according to The Desert Sun.

Despite awful eyesight and hearing, Heller defended herself against Deep Canyon Desert LLC during a brief trial in Riverside County that ended Friday. The final verdict resulted in a daunting eviction and about $1,500 in court fees and rent.

She told Judge Charles Haines at the Palm Springs courtroom she didn’t want to depend on four grandsons for help.

Evelyn Heller shouted at a judge "I’m 100 years old!" after being told to leave her flat and then pointed at her lawyer saying "I don’t understand what they are talking about".

Having lived through both World Wars, the feisty pensioner defended herself fiercely in the courtroom.

When it came for arguments, Ms Heller refused to stay at the defendant’s table which is customary, but instead stood near the judge’s bench - refusing to sit.

This type of behaviour, which can result in arrest for some defendants’, was bizarrely allowed as deputies simply stood back and watched.

High speed chase on bay bridge! Suspect in custody

California Highway Patrol officers are searching for the owners of a small black Chihuahua that was caught running along westbound lanes of the Bay Bridge on Sunday morning.
The officers eventually caught the dog, and brought it to San Francisco Animal Care and Control. The dog was resting comfortably late Sunday morning, according to the shelter.

While trying to unload gun into unarme black males who had surrendered, cop shoots white cop 9 times

Oh s**t that was Jacob': Horrifying moment cop accidentally shoots undercover white colleague NINE times after confusing him with the black suspects
This is the moment that a police detective was shot nine times by his own lieutenant.

The pair were on an undercover drug operation in Albuquerque when Greg Brachle repeatedly fired at Jacob Grant despite the detective crawling away and begging him to stop.

The city has since released the footage from Brachle's lapel camera video which filmed the disastrous episode in a MacDonald's car park.
The lieutenant can be seen getting out of his car and yelling, 'Hands up!' before running to a black car. 'Put your hands where I can see them,' he cries as several men stand with guns at the other side of the vehicle.

In the car there are four people - the two suspects Edmond Vester and Damien Bailey as well as Grant and a colleague.

Grant is sitting in the rear driver's side seat behind the other undercover narcotics detective. The two suspects are on the passenger side.

___
The bust team were supposed to approach from this side to avoid a cross fire situation, but Brachle violated protocol by advancing from the driver's side.

The suspects were in the process of surrendering and had opened their doors to exit the vehicle but Brachle swiftly opens Grant's door and fires two shots with his handgun at a distance of less than 5ft.

He then repositions himself and shoots seven more times despite Grant being white and the two suspects being black - a fact Brachle would have heard on his radio.

Moreover he and Grant had worked together for two years before the incident.

The heavily bleeding Grant - who wasn't wearing any body armour - tries to crawl away and pleads with Brachle to stop shooting.

------

Come on out Dude!, the distressed Brachle cries, 'I'm sorry man, I didn't know it was you.'

The lieutenant get increasingly hysterical as he backs away yelling to others, 'Jacob's been shot!'

The team carry Grant out of car and lie him down on the tarmac. 'Jacob!' Jacob!' Brachle wails forcefully, 'I thought you were a bad guy!'

--------

Grant, 38, lost 80% of his blood in the shooting and all of his vital organs were shot or injured. He reported additional injuries to his neck, shoulders, arms and hands.

The detective had to undergo multiple surgeries and has been in out of hospital ever since. This week the lawsuit was settled for $6.5million (£4.5million).

The city has also agree to pay Grant's medical expenses for the rest of his life.

Most thumbed up comment following article

"However, if the guy who was shot 9 times had just been an unarmed "bad guy" no one would mind at all that a trigger happy cop had filled him with lead."

A bite by a San Diego police dog could be a severe use of force, appeals court rules

If the case goes to trial, a jury would be asked not only to consider the specific incident that sent Sara Lowry to a hospital, but also to examine whether the San Diego Police Department as a whole should be held liable for its policies regarding the deployment and training of police dogs.

Lowry had gone out for drinks with co-workers the evening of Feb. 11, 2010, and after five vodka drinks at two bars, returned to her office in Pacific Beach to retrieve her lunch leftovers, according to court records. She decided to stay the night and fell asleep on the couch of her office.

She awoke shortly after and used the restroom, unknowingly triggering the building's burglar alarm, and went back to sleep.

Police were called to investigate the alarm. Sgt. Bill Nulton and his police dog, Bak, along with two other officers, found the door to Lowry's office suite open and it was mostly dark inside.

Nulton said he shouted inside, "This is the San Diego Police Department! Come out now or I'm sending in a police dog! You may be bitten!" He said he waited up to a minute more and, getting no response, yelled the warning once or twice more. He then let the dog off the leash to investigate and followed closely behind him.

With a flashlight, Nulton said he spotted what looked like a person under a blanket. The dog pounced and bit Lowry nearly entirely through her lip. Nulton quickly removed the dog. Lowry required three stitches.

Shortly after the incident, Nulton told Lowry, "I just can't believe that's the only damage. You're very lucky. She could have ripped your face off," according to court records.

Lawsuit by strip club dancers against San Diego police can advance, a judge rules

The lawsuit claims some of the officers "made arrogant and demeaning comments to the entertainers and ordered them to expose body parts so that they could ostensibly photograph their tattoos."

The dancers say the process lasted more than an hour, and when several asked if they could leave, police threatened them with arrest and stationed officers at the exits, the suit says.

Lawyers for San Diego police asked the judge to dismiss the lawsuit, saying the search and seizure was reasonable as laid out by the city's permitting law, which allows police inspections of adult entertainment businesses. Police have said that cataloging tattoos is an easy way to identify dancers who regularly change their appearances.

U.S. District Judge M. James Lorenz disagreed, saying there are limits.

"Submitting photographs and providing identification during reasonable inspections, to avoid losing a permit, is qualitatively different than stripping down to undergarments, huddling in a dressing room for up to an hour, and submitting to a photo shoot that involved the exposure of intimate body parts, to avoid arrest," he wrote.

The judge is also allowing the lawsuit to go forward on a false-imprisonment claim and a Monell claim, which can hold supervisors liable for the actions of lower-ranking officers if it can be proven that the behavior was part of a long-standing custom or practice within the Police
