- Isn't it ironic that the National ''Security'' Agency makes everyone feel the exact opposite?

“The Ministry of Peace concerns itself with war, the Ministry of Truth with lies, the Ministry of Love with torture and the Ministry of Plenty with starvation. These contradictions are not accidental, nor do they result from from ordinary hypocrisy: they are deliberate exercises in doublethink.” ~George Orwell, 1984

Hundreds Imitate Silent Protest Across Turkey

NTDTV·Published on Jun 19, 2013

Anti-government protests stood silently in Turkish cities on Tuesday, taking their lead from a man who has been dubbed the "standing man".

Performance artist Erdem Gunduz became the new symbol of anti-government protests in Turkey after his eight-hour vigil in Taksim Square earned him the nickname the "standing man".

Images of Gunduz standing quietly in the large, open square, the center of often violent unrest, have struck a chord with sympathizers.

They're more used to witnessing stone-throwing youths battling police tear gas and water cannon.

On Tuesday, hundreds more men and women staged copycat protests in Istanbul, the capital Ankara and the city of Izmir on the Aegean Coast.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is now facing the greatest public challenge to his 10-year leadership.

- There's only one logical answer: Orwell was a time-traveler.

“No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?”

45 Odd Facts About US Presidents

MentalFlossVideo·Published on Mar 27, 2013

A weekly show hosted by John Green, where knowledge junkies get their fix of trivia-tastic information. This week, John discusses 45 rather odd facts about the lives of US Presidents such as which one ran over a lady with his horse, or what Richard Nixon's favorite snack was (hint: it doesn't sound appetizing).

NOAA, partners predict possible record-setting dead zone for Gulf of Mexico

Also anticipating smaller hypoxia levels than in past in Chesapeake Bay

June 18, 2013

(Credit: NOAA)
Dead zone. Less oxygen dissolved in the water is often referred to as a
“dead zone” (in red above) because most marine life either dies, or, if
they are mobile such as fish, leave the area. Habitats that would normally
be teeming with life become, essentially, biological deserts.

Scientists are expecting a very large “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico and a smaller than average hypoxic level in the Chesapeake Bay this year, based on several NOAA-supported forecast models.

NOAA-supported modelers at the University of Michigan, Louisiana State University, and the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium are forecasting that this year’s Gulf of Mexico hypoxic “dead” zone will be between 7,286 and 8,561 square miles which could place it among the ten largest recorded.

That would range from an area the size of Connecticut, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia combined on the low end to the New Jersey on the upper end. The high estimate would exceed the largest ever reported 8,481 square miles in 2002 .

Hypoxic (very low oxygen) and anoxic (no oxygen) zones are caused by excessive nutrient pollution, often from human activities such as agriculture, which results in insufficient oxygen to support most marine life in near-bottom waters. Aspects of weather, including wind speed, wind direction, precipitation and temperature, also impact the size of dead zones.

The Gulf estimate is based on the assumption of no significant tropical storms in the two weeks preceding or during the official measurement survey cruise scheduled from July 25-August 3 2013. If a storm does occur the size estimate could drop to a low of 5344 square miles, slightly smaller than the size of Connecticut.

'The People Have Awakened': Hundreds of Thousands of Brazilians Rise Up Against the System

Reports of police firing live rounds, close-range pepper spray, and tear gas to disperse the swelling crowds

"The people have awakened," was clearly the message as roughly 240,000 Brazilians railed 'against the system' in nearly a dozen largely-peaceful demonstrations in cities across the country Monday night.

Crowding the streets, protesters waved Brazilian flags, danced and chanted slogans such as "The people have awakened" and "Pardon the inconvenience, Brazil is changing," Reuters reports.

Chaos reigned in some corners as police countered a number of the demonstrations with brute force. In Rio de Janiero, crowds swelled to roughly 100,000 people and police used tear gas, pepper spray and, as evidenced by an video posted on Brazil's Extra 15, live rounds to disperse them.

In the political capital of Brasilia, demonstrators scaled the roof of Brazil's Congress building before storming the interior. And in the southeastern city of Belo Horizonte, over 20,000 protesters rallied outside of the Confederations Cup football tournament in the second day of protests against the event.

Protesters Demand Release of Guantanamo Prisoners

NTDTV·Published on Jun 18, 2013

Some 400 protesters demonstrate for the release of Guantanamo prisoners and against Barack Obama ahead of the U.S. president's visit to Germany.

Full story:

One day before U.S. President Barack Obama was to arrive in Germany, some 400 protesters demonstrated for the release of all Guantanamo prisoners during a march in Berlin on Monday (June 17).

Carrying banners reading "no foreign military missions!" and "end Cuban blockade!," the demonstrators marched to Berlin's landmark, the Brandenburg Gate where Obama is scheduled to hold a speech in front of some 4,000 invited guests on Wednesday.

Police had sealed off the landmark as well as the nearby U.S. embassy as one protester called it "outrageous how the red carpet is being rolled out for this man."

{Detlef Kalkbrenner, Protester}:
"I find it outrageous how the red carpet is being rolled out for this man. How many years has it been since he wanted to close Guantanamo? I don't even remember myself. Nobel Peace Prize? Don't you think that's ridiculous? It's a shame, this man is a shame."

Another demonstration participant who gave her name as Elisa said "I am demonstrating against the prison in Guantanamo because the people there are imprisoned without being charged and without hope for defence or release."

Obama is expected to arrive in Berlin from the G8 summit in Northern Ireland on Tuesday evening and to hold talks on Wednesday with Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Joachim Gauck and others.

While organisers estimated the numbers of participants at 600, German police put the figure at 400.
