sarge43's JournalWell, I'm one of those old (80) very white (German, British, Scandie) people and I don't remember
the old days being all that great. I do remember my mother being terrified about me contracting polio. Just about everyone knew someone affected. I remember having to wear skirts or dresses to school during Michigan winters because slacks weren't "lady like". I remember the duck and cover drills. Even then I thought they were a joke because I saw the nuke tests on the "News of the Week" shorts shown at the movie theaters. I remember a Saturday Evening Post cover which a block titled "The Negro Problem". Blaming the victim is nothing new.
I won't use up all the universe's electrons detailing the crap that minorities and women in the armed forces had deal with during the 60's and 70's.
Those days weren't totally terrible, but they sure weren't "Father Knows Best" or "The Donna Reed" shows.
