Amnesty Interational: China Must Avoid Excessive Force in Response to Tibetan Protests
January 25, 2012

(Washington, D.C.) -- China must avoid using excessive force in response to protests and allow independent monitors into areas of protest, Amnesty International said today after Chinese security forces in Sichuan Province reportedly fired on Tibetan protestors for a second successive day.
Chinese authorities have dismissed reports based on eyewitness accounts of deadly clashes between police and Tibetan protesters as "hype."
"The Chinese authorities are responding only with repression and a security crackdown to an already volatile situation, instead of addressing long-standing human rights grievances on the part of Tibetans, said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty Internationals Asia-Pacific director. "The situation has not improved in Tibetan areas since 2008 when tensions exploded into violence. Grievances regarding restrictions on religious and cultural freedoms have gotten worse, not better."
--------
Amnesty International repeated its request that the Chinese government allow independent monitors, for instance the U.N. Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, into the country.

MANCHESTER -- In late 2003, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean was a front-runner in the Democrat's race for the presidential nomination.
Crowds that could once be counted on one hand had grown into thousands, and "Deaniacs" would roar with approval when Dean would deliver the signature line they craved: "You have the power!"
--------
Eight years after the campaign, after a successful stint as chairman of the Democratic National Committee and frequent appearances on cable news shows, Dean is now teaching a course about politics at Yale. Had he secured the nomination and gone on to win the presidency he could be wrapping his second term. Although Dean is disappointed, not all share his sentiment, even within his own family.
"I'm sorry I didn't win. Very sorry I didn't win. But, my wife isn't sorry. Every year she says, You know Howard, the country really could have used you. You would have been a terrific president, but I'm really glad you didn't win because every time I see what Michelle Obama has to do I think, Oh my God, that could be me,'" Howard said.

Erik Shveima, Mixed Media Daily
Los Angeles artist Erik Shveima set out last Jan. 1 on a personal project to draw the Los Angeles Times every day of 2011. In a guest post, he looks back on the endeavor:
This past year the paper kept me up at night.
Not because I worry about its future (although I do, in fact, worry about its future), but because of what that worry compelled me to do.
Mmd-01_01_2011In late 2010 I decided to dedicate the coming year to drawing the Los Angeles Times the front page in particular every day. By the end I would have a portrait of the years news, a 21st century commonplace book dedicated to the mystery of news cycles, serif fonts and spadeas (which, I learned from a commenter, is what those half-page ads that wrap around the A section are called). I called the project Mixed Media Daily, and I posted the drawings every day.
