The 11 most important religion and politics findings of 2011

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/figuring-faith/post/the-11-most-important-religion-and-politics-findings-of-2011/2011/12/28/gIQAF6nUMP_blog.html

1.Occupy Wall Street Matches the Tea Party in Influence. Equal numbers of Americans say the Occupy Wall Street movement shares their values as say the Tea Party movement shares their values (29 percent each). The Tea Party is more likely than OWS to resonate with white evangelical Protestants, while OWS is more likely to resonate with minority Christians and religiously unaffiliated Americans.

2.Support for Same-sex Marriage is No Longer a Minority Position. At the midpoint of the year, PRRI was one of four national public polls showing slim majority (51 percent) support for allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. Subsequent 2011 surveys show a slight decline in support from the May high, but a plurality continue to support same-sex marriage. Among religious groups, Catholics stand out. While the Catholic bishops and church hierarchy strongly oppose same-sex marriage, a majority of American Catholics (52 percent) support allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. More than 7-in-10 (72 percent) of Catholics also say that gay and lesbian relationships should be accepted by society.

4.Americans Continue to Struggle with Muslims’ Place in American Society. A majority (54 percent) of Americans agree that American Muslims are an important part of the religious community in the U.S., compared to 43 percent who disagree. However, significant numbers of Americans report being at least somewhat uncomfortable with public expressions of the Muslim faith such as a mosque being built in their neighborhood (46 percent), a Muslim woman wearing a burqa (48 percent), or Muslim men kneeling to pray at an airport (45 percent).

No Photo ID Required to Vote in GOP's Iowa Caucus

http://www.bradblog.com/?p=9016

For all of their years of claims that massive voter fraud is going on at the polling place, such that Photo ID restrictions are required to ensure the integrity of the vote, you'd think that when Republicans have a chance to run their own elections, they'd be sure to want it to be as "fraud" free as possible.

Nonetheless, despite onerous polling place Photo ID requirements now passed into law in about a dozen states where the GOP controls both the legislative and executive branches, voters will be able to cast their ballot in next Tuesday's "First-in-the-Nation" Republican Iowa Caucuses without bothering to show a Photo ID --- even though the Republican Party itself sets their own rules for voting there.

Unlike most primary elections where an official state election board or agency sets the rules and runs the registration and balloting processes, the Iowa Republican Party runs its own state caucuses, determines the rules, tabulates all the votes and announces the results to the public and media themselves. They have complete control over the entire process, and yet they don't bother to ask their own voters to show a state-issued Photo ID before casting their ballot.

Amazing Courage of Egyptian Protesters! Must See! (Jan 2011)

"Uploaded by emiryemen on Jan 29, 2011

Despite their use of heavy-handed tactics, riot police in Cairo fail to push back Egyptian protesters on the Kasr al-Nil Bridge, 28/01/11.

God willing the Egyptian people will succeed in their revolution and like their brothers in Tunisia, go on to force out their tyrant 'leader' Hosni Mubarak. And finally, let them set an inspiring example to the surrounding nations facing the same problems."

I See What Occupy Vancouver Did There...And It's Brilliant

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/12/23/1048311/-I-See-What-Occupy-Vancouver-Did-ThereAnd-Its-Brilliant

The media’s latest attempt to undercut the message of Occupy movements all across the globe is by touting the “cost” of these protests. Many sources are reporting that Occupy movements are costing cities hundreds of thousands of dollars in police overtime because apparently it takes an entire precinct to make sure that 50 people don't sleep through the night. When an internal city memorandum stated that Occupy Vancouver had cost its city nearly a million dollars in taxpayer money, the organizers did something brilliant: they broke down the cost of what they were doing for the city of Vancouver.

According to a recent press release from Occupy Vancouver member Eric Hamilton-Smith, “…over 37,000 meals were served, $672,000 of primary medical care was provided, and 30 people were housed for 37 days at a time when beds at primary shelters were not available.” This assessment puts the overall price tag of benefits to the community at over one million dollars, approximately matching the “cost” attributed to the protests, as well as picking up the tab for services that would have been stuck to the community-at-large.
