Discovery-backed network has grown in recent weeks, and she has been seen holding forth at 9 in what was likely a test of her screen presence and viewer reaction to it. The pivot is a quick one — Collins was just a few months ago paired with Don Lemon and Poppy Harlow as part of CNN’s morning program — and reflects the pressures CNN has come under after the January 6 insurrection.

Collins had been working for the conservative website The Daily Caller (aka Tucker Carlson) in the middle of last decade when she started making appearances on CNN. She joined the network in 2017 under the aegis of its previous chief, Jeff Zucker. She became a regular Washington presence for CNN, and often tangled with the vicissitudes of the Trump administration. She was named the network’s chief White House correspondent at the age of 28, the youngest person to be awarded the title. Soon, she will have an even more prominent position.

The scariest part of Trump's demoralizing CNN town hall wasn't his expected lies about Jan. 6 and the 2020 vote, but the room that applauded it.

Like the several million others who went against their better instincts and watched CNN’s New Hampshire town hall with Donald Trump on Wednesday night, I thought I was mentally prepared for what was going to be a predictably demoralizing 70-minute torrent of full-force lies.

That was all too predictable. But here’s what I wasn’t prepared for, and it gutted me.

The applause.

I never expected Trump’s inanities like the assertion that U.S. elections are routinely rigged (spoiler alert: they aren’t) or the inevitable attack on CNN moderator Kaitlin Collins as “a nasty person” would be greeted with a roomful of cheers, like platitudes on a late-night TV talk show. As the night dragged on, it felt like Trump had become a kind of Johnny Carson for a new version of “middle America” that I no longer recognize, trapped in a bubble of alternate reality and exploding with glee when the rhetoric turned violent or ugly.

CINCINNATI — Former Vice President Mike Pence subtly defended former President Donald Trump in an interview Tuesday, hours after a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation.

“I would tell you, in my 4½ years serving alongside the president, I never heard or witnessed behavior of that nature,” he said.

Pence was in Cincinnati to speak at a gala for the Center for Christian Virtue.

Trump Lies That He Wasn't Able to Defend Himself in Rape Trial

Donald Trump wants you to know that, in the civil rape lawsuit jurors will begin deliberating on Tuesday, he is the real victim.

"Waiting for a jury decision on a False Accusation where I, despite being a current political candidate and leading all others in both parties, am not allowed to speak or defend myself, even as hard nosed reporters scream questions about this case at me," the former president wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday. "In the meantime, the other side has a book falsely accusing me of Rape, & is working with the press. I will therefore not speak until after the trial, but will appeal the Unconstitutional silencing of me, as a candidate, no matter the outcome!"

This is a lie. Trump has had every opportunity to defend himself in the trial. His legal team informed Judge Lewis Kaplan last week, however, that they would not be presenting any defense. A day later, Trump whined about the case to reporters overseas, teasing that he would "probably" attend the trial and that he was returning to the United States early in order to "confront" Carroll, whom he called a "disgrace."

Trump lawyer Joe Tacopina reportedly informed Judge Kaplan this would not be happening, but Kaplan still gave Trump a chance to to speak at the trial, setting a Sunday evening deadline for his team to file the paperwork required for him to do so. The deadline came and went without said paperwork being filed, and Trump lost his chance to speak on his own behalf. Both sides delivered their closing arguments on Monday, and the jury is set to begin deliberating on Tuesday.

Trump has had every opportunity to defend himself in front of jurors, but he's opted to stick to his Truth Social account -- which has indeed gotten him into a little trouble with the court. Judge Kaplan told Tacopina last week that Trump may be "tampering with a new source of potential liability" by railing against Carroll on social media. The warning came hours after Trump called the allegations a "made up SCAM" and accused Carroll's lawyer of being a "political operative."

Carroll, a columnist who has written for Elle and other publications, accused Trump in 2019 of raping her in a department store dressing room in the mid-'90s. Trump bashed her repeatedly following the allegation, leading her to sue him for defamation. She filed another suit late last year, this one for battery, under New York's recently enacted Adult Survivors Act. Trump has denied Carroll's allegations, largely by claiming he would have never raped her because she is not his "type." Video of Trump's deposition released last week shows the former president mistaking Carroll for his second wife.

Louisiana man "Doyle, 58, told officers he got his gun after seeing "shadows outside his home."

Louisiana man shoots girl playing hide-and-seek on his property, police say

A Louisiana man has been charged after police said he shot a 14-year-old girl in the back of the head after she had been playing hide-and-seek on his property.

The shooting occurred Sunday morning in Starks, La., a rural town of fewer than 700 people near the border with Texas. Officers from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office received reports of a shooting at a property there, the office said in a news release. When they arrived, they found the girl suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, the release said.

The release said children had been playing hide-and-seek in the area and hiding on David V. Doyle’s property. Doyle, 58, told officers he got his gun after seeing “shadows outside his home.”

Doyle “then advised detectives he went back outside and observed people running away from his property, at which time he began shooting at them and unknowingly hit the girl,” according to the release.
