Mother Jones: Black Employees at a Trump Casino Were Reportedly Removed Whenever the Donald Arrived

Black Employees at a Trump Casino Were Reportedly Removed Whenever the Donald Arrived
—Inae Oh on Mon. August 31, 2015 11:03 AM PDT

It was only recently that Republican presidential candidate and front-runner Donald Trump said he'd be willing to physically fight Black Lives Matter activists if they interrupted him on stage. Now, a new report from the New Yorker relays an alarming account of how black employees at one of Donald Trump's Atlantic City properties were routinely kept from view when the real estate magnate came to town. From writer Nick Paumgarten:

I met a bus driver named Kip Brown, who worked the Port Authority route, up and back each morning, for Academy Bus Lines. He had been at Academy for fifteen years and was No. 3 in seniority, out of seventy drivers in the region. As ridership has fallen, Academy has been cutting back on its schedule. The number of visitors arriving by bus is an eighth of what it was a quarter century ago. In the spring, Brown, just forty-seven, retired.

Now he was looking for work as a livery driver. Brown also used to work in the casinos, at the Showboat, bussing tables, and at Trump’s Castle, stripping and waxing floors. "When Donald and Ivana came to the casino, the bosses would order all the black people off the floor," he said. "It was the eighties, I was a teen-ager, but I remember it: they put us all in the back."

Three Category 4 Hurricanes in the Pacific Ocean: How Rare Is That?

It seems Hawaii has been a target of several tropical systems this year, and Hurricane Ignacio is expected to move near the 50th state.

A very rare meteorological event occurred Saturday evening into early Sunday morning when three Category 4 hurricanes were ongoing simultaneously in the Pacific Ocean.

At 11 p.m. EDT Saturday, Huricane Kilo (135 mph) was located well southwest of the Hawaiian Islands followed by Hurricane Ignacio (140 mph) to the east of Hawaii and Hurricane Jimena (140 mph) in the eastern Pacific. Kilo was the last of the trio to reach Category 4 status, doing so on Saturday evening. For reference, hurricanes with maximum sustained winds of 130-156 mph are classified as Category 4, which is the second highest category on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

However, by 5 p.m. EDT Sunday both Kilo and Ignacio had begun to weaken and were classified as Category 3 hurricanes, while Jimena maintained its Category 4 status.

Sanders Within Striking Distance of Clinton in Iowa

Aug 29, 2015 6:00 PM EDT

The latest Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll shows concerns about Clinton, enthusiasm for Sanders and the possibility of Biden roiling the Democratic field.

Hillary Clinton’s once-prohibitive advantage in Iowa has slipped enough to jeopardize her front-runner status and Bernie Sanders has moved to within striking distance, revealing a Democratic presidential field in unexpected flux as Vice President Joe Biden mulls whether to make a late entrance into the race.

The results of the latest Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll, released Saturday, show Clinton is now the first choice of 37 percent of likely Democratic caucus-goers in the state where the first ballots of the presidential contest will be cast early in 2016. She's followed by Sanders at 30 percent and Biden at 14 percent. It’s the first time the poll has had Clinton's support under 50 percent.

In May, the Iowa Poll put Clinton, a former secretary of state, U.S. senator and first lady, at 57 percent, Sanders at 16 percent, and Biden at 8 percent.

Iowa poll: Bernie Sanders closing in on Hillary Clinton

CBS NEWS
Aug 29, 2015 6:00 PM EDT

Independent Bernie Sanders is closing in on Hillary Clinton in Iowa, narrowing the gap to a single-digit lead, according to a new poll.

A Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll released Saturday found that 37 percent of likely Democratic caucus goers say Hillary Clinton is their first choice for president, compared to 30 percent for Sanders. In June, Sanders trailed Clinton by a much wider margin, with 24 percent to Clinton's 50 percent.

Fourteen percent chose Vice President Joe Biden, who is mulling a presidential run. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley would garner three percent, and former Virginia Senator Jim Webb would be the first choice of two percent.

It's worth noting that in this poll, Sanders isn't a protest choice for those who support him: the vast majority - 96 percent - said they support his ideas, and only two percent said they'd vote for Sanders because they don't support Clinton.

The popular Christian vlogger Sam Rader—best known for “surprising” his wife with her own positive pregnancy test in a viral video—had a paid account on the cheating website Ashley Madison in 2013, the Daily Mail reports. Sam is a leader in a new industry of online evangelism, posting daily videos of his upstanding, Jesus-loving family for hundreds of thousands of subscribers.

Sam, whose new “manager” told the Daily Mail from a vlogger conference in Seattle that “we are not going to comment on this right now,” has done such a good job marketing his Christian family values on YouTube that he quit his job this month to vlog full time. (We reached out to Sam for comment but have not heard back.) Though his latest pregnancy stunt video was controversial, Sam has built a real, loyal following preaching the bible and vlogging about wanting to be a “good man” to his wife of almost six years, Nia—the kind of “man I want [my daughter] to marry.”
