Data shows 2011 a record-breaking year for extreme weather

By Agence France-Presse
Thursday, January 19, 2012

WASHINGTON — Last year broke records for extreme weather in the United States, with 14 events each causing at least a billion dollars in damage, US authorities said on Thursday.

Also, 2011 marked 35 years in a row that global temperatures have been warmer than average, according to data released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

“It was extraordinary regarding major weather and climate disasters in particular in our country, from tornadoes to droughts to floods and extreme storms,” she told reporters.
“America endured an unusually large number of extreme events causing damages totaling more than $55 billion dollars.”

Sullivan said a series of factors contributed to the high costs of bad weather, including that there are more “people and infrastructure in harm’s way.”

DAVOS, SWITZERLAND | Mon Jan 16, 2012 10:54am EST

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Occupy protesters with their sights set on the World Economic Forum, the annual gathering next week of the rich and powerful in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, unveiled their igloo accommodation on Monday.

When fully erected, Camp Igloo will include two heated teepees and a field kitchen alongside the ice houses to sleep about 50 people in sub-zero temperatures, activists said.

Davos, which brings together politicians, central bankers and business leaders, has become a byword for globalization.

"It is the decisions of the few which have led us into the crisis of recent years and now the same people are posing as the solution to these problems," David Roth, president of the youth wing of the Swiss Social Democrats, told reporters at Camp Igloo, near the Davos train station.

Child leukaemia doubles near French nuclear plants: study

By Reuters

PARIS (Reuters) – The incidence of leukemia is twice as high in children living close to French nuclear power plants as in those living elsewhere in the country, a study by French health and nuclear safety experts has found.

The study, conducted by the French health research body INSERM, found that between 2002 and 2007, 14 children under the age of 15 living in a 5-kilometre radius of France’s 19 nuclear power plants had been diagnosed with leukemia.

This is double the rate of the rest of the country, where a total of 2,753 cases were diagnosed in the same period.

“This is a result which has been checked thoroughly and which is statistically significant,” said Dominique Laurier, head of the epidemiology research laboratory at France’s nuclear safety research body (IRSN).

Arab monitor quits Syria mission in disgust

Wed Jan 11, 2012 3:59am EST

BEIRUT (Reuters) - An Arab League observer has left Syria, saying he had witnessed "scenes of horror" that he was powerless to prevent and that the Arab monitoring team sent to the country was not acting independently.

"I withdrew because I found myself serving the (Syrian) regime," Anwar Malek told Al Jazeera television, still wearing the orange vest used by the Arab monitors.

"How was I serving the regime? I was giving the regime a greater chance to continue its killing and I could not prevent that," the Algerian said in an interview at Al Jazeera's headquarters in Qatar.

The Arab League monitoring mission, now about 165 strong, began work on December 26. Its task is to verify if Syria is complying with an agreement to halt a crackdown on 10 months of protests against President Bashar al-Assad in which the United Nations says more than

Park Barricades Removed: Occupy Wall Street Protesters Stream Back In To Former Camp

By CHRISTIAN SALAZAR, The Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Barricades surrounding a park that served as a camp for Occupy Wall Street protesters were removed Tuesday, allowing protesters to stream back in.

The atmosphere was celebratory but calm on Tuesday evening as about 300 protesters began filling New York City's Zuccotti Park a couple of hours after the barricades were taken down and a day after a complaint about the barricades was filed with the city. Protesters milled around, eating lasagna on paper plates and playing chess.

"Word spread pretty quickly, and we ran down here," demonstrator Lauren DiGioia said. "It's hard to remember what it was like before the barricades were put up."

On Monday, civil rights groups filed a complaint with the city's buildings department saying the barricades were a violation of city zoning law because they restricted public access to the space. The New York Civil Liberties Union commended the removal of the barricades in a statement late Tuesday.

Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future: Pope

VATICAN CITY | Mon Jan 9, 2012 2:25pm EST

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict said Monday that gay marriage was one of several threats to the traditional family that undermined "the future of humanity itself."

The pope made some of his strongest comments against gay marriage in a new year address to the diplomatic corps accredited to the Vatican in which he touched on some economic and social issues facing the world today.

He told diplomats from nearly 180 countries that the education of children needed proper "settings" and that "pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman."

"This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself," he said.

Wishadoo Request From DUer

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x2474113

"Time is of the essence, and finding a loving home -- one home -- for these two kitties would be such a blessing for this Wishadooer's friend, whose time to pass is drawing near.

Her final request is to find a home for her babies; that one thing would give her such peace of mind.

Please reply to the above link if you can help. The Wishadooer is far away from her friend, not in the same part of the country at all, but is trying to get the word out, especially to those in the Northeast, if not the New York area specifically."

Clark's New Year's resolution is to expand the WikiLeaks Truck project and make a fleet around the world.

To afford to do so, he must sell the original truck.

This is not the end of this conceptual art piece, rather it is merely just the beginning.
