Can We Get a Big Round of Applause for Our Nation's SOSs?

Who knew they had it in them? Even Republican state Secretary of States are defying the Kremlin's request for sensitive voter data that could be used 1) to suppress votes, hack vote totals and steal the 2018 midterm elections and 2) (if number one turns out to be impossible due to Trump's massive disapproval ratings) give Russia criminals enough data to steal the identities and bank accounts of every single American who voted in 2016. Thats 126 million of us! What a great gift idea for Putin from Trump to repay him for all that blackmail, disinformation, hacking, under the table money and the odd handful of "deaths in mysterious circumstances".

Apparently, Americans (who disagree about sports, religion, race) agree on one thing. It is our own damn money. We worked for it. And we are not going to allow Trump to give it to the Russian Mob.

Trump, even if a sucker is born every minute, there are only 550,000 minutes in a year. That's 550,000 suckers compared to the 126 million Americans who actually bothered to take part in the Democratic process in 2016 ( a low turn out year). Some of those American voted for you because you promised them a better life. A few voted for you because you made an (implicit) promise to give Blacks, Latinos, Muslims and women worse lives. No one voted for you because they longed for the good old days of the Great Depression.

SOSs, keep up the good work. While it is the job of state Attorney Generals to keep us safe from crime--like credit card fraud, bank fraud and identify theft---in today's age of cyber-crime, law enforcement needs all the help it can get!

But I Don't WANT Putin to Have My Social Security Number!

Psst! Get this! If you live in a state with a Republican Secretary of State--like, for example, Texas--your state is about to quietly turn over its entire voter roll including your name, address, party affiliation and social security number to Trump. Trump will then turn it over to his puppet master, Putin. And Putin will give the whole package to his army of hackers who will then proceed to malign, trash, attack and destroy any Democrats on the lists. Oh, while they are at, Putin's puppets in Washington will pressure your employer to fire you, if he/she want to keep getting government contracts. And pressure your government employer to fire you if they want to keep getting money from Congress. And have the IRS audit you. And revoke your citizenship on a technicality if you registered as a Democrat and send you back to Guatemalastan.

What the fuck?!

How do I know this is happening? Because states with Democratic Secretaries of State like Kentucky are giving Trump the big old "Fuck you."As in "You can have my voter rolls when you pry them from my cold, stiff fingers."

I don't want the greasy real estate salesman that Trump once was and soon will be again to have my personal information complete with my social security number. And I sure as hell don't want Putin to have it.

And while we are at it, can I have my f-ing country back? Pretty please.

ACLU, League of Women Voters! File now for paper ballots in 2018

Now that we know that Putin controls the e-vote tabulation process in the US, we can not count on the 2018 midterms to change anything. Indeed, when Trump and the GOP blithely continue to do such unpopular things as cutting funding for Meals on Wheels and taking health insurance from millions of Americans it is a sign--- a sign that Moscow has promised to protect the GOP and Trump from wrath of voters in 2018.

Don't count on the special prosecutor to get us out of this mess. If Putin hacks the vote and allows the GOP to retain control of Congress, Trump will never be impeached.

The only branch of the government that has ( not yet) been co-opted by Putin is the Judiciary. Now is the time to file lawsuits in all 50 states to get paper ballots. This will give the cases time to wind through the courts well in advance of the elections.

This will be costly but that's ok. Launch a massive "Give me paper ballots or give me death" campaign and money will pour in.

A states with Dems in SOS offices---lead the way by announcing now that you will be offering paper ballots in all upcoming elections. The handicapped can continue to use e-voting but all voters will have to be offered paper ballots. I guarantee that OUR base will use them.

Gimme paper ballots

Or give me death!

This has to be the Democratic Party's message. Because if Russia is allowed to hack another election---this time with Trump and Sessions aiding them---democracy in America will be deader than a doornail forever. It was a Russian(Stalin--benefactor of the Koch Family) who said that he who counts the votes controls all. Don't let the Kremlin control our country! Resist! Make them count the votes in 2018---democracy's last stand!

Take Away Points from Today

1. Comey said the independent counsel was appointed, because Trump revealed he has tapes (that could be destroyed). Also, by implication, if Trump does not produce tapes that contradict Comey's memos, then Comey is telling the truth (because we now know that Trump keeps tapes). Also, Trump faces an independent counsel investigation now because he is a moron.

2. The GOP is so desperate that they will try to claim that the POTUS saying "I hope" to a subordinate is not an order, it is just him making a wish. Making Comey a genie.

3. The GOP will also try to claim that because Comey did not immediately charge the POTUS with attempting to obstruct justice after their final conversation, he, Comey was also guilty of taking part in a conspiracy to obstruct justice. (Very, thin, I know. They are desperate.)

4. Comey repeatedly and gleefully (in his subdued way) reminded us that Trump himself has said that he (and Sessions) decided to fire Comey over the Russia investigation. Making Comey's firing obstruction of justice.

5. If 4 is true, then Sessions un-recused himself in order to take part in the Russia investigation. If Sessions says he did not do it for this reason, then he is calling Trump a liar or demented or both.

6. Comey blamed Bill Clinton for his decision to get involved in the election at the last minute (Bill is always an easy target). Comey claims he had to do it to help the FBI and DOJ save face (Because Lord knows the credibility of the DOJ is so much more important than the democratic process.) Before you have a panic attack, keep in mind that this may buy him the support of some powerful Republicans who hate Bill as much as they hate Donald. I am sure that Bill Clinton will accept being scapegoated once again if it gets Trump impeached.

7. Comey looked like a calm, rational and above all else truthful human being--in comparison to Trump.

All in all, Trump had a very bad day. I hope they keep him far far away from the red button. North Korea and Qatar should not have to pay for Trump's criminal stupidity.

When Citizens United Met Trump, Plus Bonus Connect the Dots to Putin

Part 2 in my retrospective “Whatever Happened to Our Democracy? Oh, that’s right. Citizens United Happened.”

Meet David Bossie, just your average Republican dirt digger who sharpened his teeth working for Dan Burton during the Clinton administration. In 2010, his group, Citizens United persuaded five members of the Supreme Court to rule that corporations—all corporations, Russian and Chinese as well as U.S.---had a Constitutional right to pour as much money as they wanted into U.S. elections. I wrote about this last night.

Tonight, I am going to tell a story that is even stranger and more shocking. Donald Trump was involved in Citizens United.

“The relationship between Bossie and President Trump began around the time of Citizens United v. The Federal Election Commission. Trump was reportedly very interested in the case and was told about Bossie by a fellow casino magnate, Steve Wynn. Trump was mulling a run for president in 2012 and Bossie piqued his interest.

"When Trump did run for president four years later, he remained in contact with Bossie, and in September of 2016, made Bossie’s involvement in the Trump campaign official, naming him deputy campaign manager. Trump himself asked Bossie to join the campaign, tasking him with running the day-to-day operations and field operations, in addition to participate in debate prep, jobs that had become neglected by campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, as her media availability had started to take precedent.

"In announcing the hiring of Bossie, Trump referred to him as “a friend of mine for many years,” saying that Bossie was “solid. Smart. Loves politics, knows how to win.””

http://heavy.com/news/2017/06/david-bossie-trump-war-room-russia/

I’ll give you a moment to get your head around this. The man who orchestrated Citizens United---selling the American people into servitude to any foreign power willing to spend enough money---was best friends with Donald Trump. And it was Citizens United that allowed Russia to pour the cash into the Trump family campaign coffers.

More on the Bromance between Trump and Bossie:

“Only a handful of people close to Mr. Trump understood the depth of his interest in the presidency, and the earnestness with which he eyed the 2016 campaign. Mr. Trump had struck up a friendship in 2009 with David N. Bossie, the president of the conservative group Citizens United, who met Mr. Trump through the casino magnate Steve Wynn.

"Mr. Trump conferred with Mr. Bossie during the 2012 election and, as 2016 approached, sought his advice on setting up a campaign structure. Mr. Bossie made recommendations for staff members to hire, and Mr. Trump embraced them.”

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/4/12/1514319/-Peeking-into-Trump-s-Black-Box-David-Bossie-and-Citizens-United

Wild, right? But wait, the connect the dots gets even wilder. Bossie recommended Corey Lewandowski to Trump, according to the above article. And guess who Corey Lewandowski brought on board.

Give up? Carter Page.

http://www.rawstory.com/2017/04/corey-lewandowski-introduced-russia-linked-carter-page-to-the-trump-2016-team-report/

“Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski acted as conduit between Carter Page and campaign policy director Sam Clovis, the Daily Caller reports. Lewandowski’s introduction eventually led to Page joining the campaign as a foreign policy adviser.Despite once insisting he has “never met or spoken to Carter Page in [his] life,” Lewandowski actually introduced Page to Clovis in New York City “in late 2015 or early 2016,” the Daily Caller reports.”

In case you’ve been living in a cave for the last six months, Carter Page’s claim to fame is that he is a bone fide traitor to his country.

“Page is also plagued by a 2013 meeting with a Russian spy, where the former Trump campaign adviser reportedly passed documents to the secret agent. An FBI lawsuit against three Russian spies revealed the espionage ring attempted to recruit Page.”

There you have it. Five (not six) degrees of separation, Russia (Putin) to Carter Page to Corey Lewandowiski to David Bossie to Citizens United. With Trump in the middle.

Do you ever get the feeling that a whole lot of people have been involved in one great big conspiracy for a very long time? And that maybe when they persuaded John Roberts and the Supreme Court to make it easy for a foreign country to take over the United States, they were already thinking ahead to Russia?

How Justices Scalia, Thomas, Alito, Kennedy and Roberts Brought the Russia Bear to Our Door

Never forget what branch of the U.S. government decided that unlimited corporate spending---from any corporation, not just U.S. corporations---was a good idea. Justices Thomas, Scalia, Alito, Roberts and Kennedy--fuck you, the way you fucked your country. You were warned that your ruling in Citizens United opened the door to a hostile take over of our country by a foreign power. Did you care? Not a bit. You are not jurists. You are the lapdogs of the wealthy. If you had any shame, you would all resign---after Trump and Pence are impeached.

https://raskin.house.gov/media/press-releases/rep-raskin-introduces-get-foreign-money-out-us-elections-act

"At bottom, the Court's opinion is thus a rejection of the common sense of the American people, who have recognized a need to prevent corporations from undermining self government since the founding, and who have fought against the distinctive corrupting potential of corporate electioneering since the days of Theodore Roosevelt. It is a strange time to repudiate that common sense. While American democracy is imperfect, few outside the majority of this Court would have thought its flaws included a dearth of corporate money in politic."

Last line of Justice Steven's dissenting opinion.

Russia and countries like Russia will be slobbering all over us like a pack of hungry wolves every election until we close the unlimited foreign corporate money in U.S. elections loophole that the Supreme Court deliberately created in Citizens United.

Vet to Trump: "Taking money from me to give to profit-making medical providers is wrong"

How does Trump/Putin plan to keep his promise to improve health care for our nation's veterans? He is going to take away disability payments for a quarter of a million veterans. These are military men and women who suffered such extensive injuries that they can no longer work. Part of their contract with the federal government that employed them to keep the nation safe was that if they were injured, the nation would take care of their injuries. If they died, the nation would take care of their loved ones. And, if they suffered injuries that made it impossible for them to work, the nation would provide for them rather than just dumping them onto the streets where they would have to scramble for themselves in a world which increasingly has little to offer the poor, homeless and disabled.

http://www.military.com/daily-news/2017/06/01/proposed-va-benefit-cut-angers-elderly-disabled-vets.html

""Taking money from me to give to profit-making medical providers is wrong. You are screwing me and my wife," said a former Marine sergeant who served with the 26th Marines at Khe Sanh. "It makes no sense for [the Department of Veterans Affairs] to have to fund the Choice program.

"We did our part by serving, and so many gave their lives. Maybe some of those supporting the bill should visit the VA hospitals with veterans suffering and just waiting for their final call. Then tell their families, 'He was a good man,' " said the sergeant.

Major veterans organizations slammed the budget proposals as soon as they were issued and also questioned Shulkin's push to expand the Choice program.

"We are very concerned the administration's request to make the Veterans Choice Program a permanent, mandatory program could lead to a gradual erosion of the VA health care system," the Veterans of Foreign Wars said in written testimony to a hearing of the House Veterans Affairs Committee last month."

The "CHOICE" program is designed to get veterans who do not live near VA medical facilities accessible, timely care. It was never meant to take the place of the Veterans Administration--except in the dreams of orthopedic surgeons like Secretary of Health Tom Price, who takes money from the artificial joint industry to promote their product. And it was never, ever intended to take the food out of the mouths of hungry, disabled veteran so that a private sector surgeon somewhere could make a Lexus payment by putting an artificial knee in a patient who does not need one. Or performing unnecessary back surgery, sinus surgery, hysterectomies---

But let's not get into what constitutes necessary medical care. That is something that must be decided on a case by case basis. Instead, I ask you to consider the ethical question---by asking disabled veterans to give up food and housing in order to pay for health care for other veterans, is not the Trump administration creating a sort of Death Panel? As in "You are too disabled to work, therefore your need to eat and have a roof over your head is less important than fixing someone else's knee so he can get back to work. Only those who can work count in Trump's America. Everyone else belongs on an ice floe."

If they'll do it to the veterans, they will do it to every one of us. Because Trump actually (claims to) give a damn about the military. The rest of us were put on this earth to make him and his Russian handlers money.

Every Story in This Forum That is Not About Trump/Putin Is a Waste of Words

That got your attention, didn't it? Good. It was supposed to. Now, while you are considering your response to the tag line, please read on.

The tag line is my opinion. At this moment. Tomorrow, I may feel differently. There is no absolute truth, just relative truth. And at the moment, the truth is that I am ashamed of how easily we allow ourselves to be distracted.

Yes, I know that I am no fun. Yes, I know that we have free speech in this country, and that we are free to write about whatever we want including the way that we want to limit other people's free speech--that is why I can write this post that many will say attempts to quash free speech. Trust me, I would never take away your right to free speech. But I reserve the right to critique the way that free speech is used. And I am pretty sure that "free speech" includes "freedom to criticize"--especially if the criticism is constructive. So, please, stop feeling personally insulted and read on.

This is not a matter or rights or ethics or even manners. This is a matter of expediency.

With a traitor in the White House destroying our economy and our environment and our future, it seems to me that we ought to keep our eyes on the prize and not let ourselves get distracted and divided and conquered. But then, I admit, I am no fun that way. I am always sticking my nose into a perfectly good flame war and declaring it a "divide and conquer". I am sure that those who enjoy a good flame war have a picture of me on a wall somewhere with the words "Enemy of Divide and Conquer" written beneath it in big, bold red Republican letters. Because Divide and Conquer is still and will always be the number one tool of those opposed to the democratic process, i.e. the GOP.

Can I get those words etched on my tombstone? They can never be repeated too often.

Divide and Conquer is still and will always be the number one tool of those opposed to the democratic process, i.e. the GOP.

Fool's Calvinism Comes Home to Roost

First, a disclaimer----John Calvin would have condemned Trump, the leader of the White House Crime Family. However, the roots of the flaw in United States culture that makes Trump's criminal enterprise possible can be found in a particular brand of Calvinism that goes something like "We are born either damned or blessed, and we can know which we are by weighing God's favor shown upon us in this life." Or, more simply "The rich are better than the rest of us."

What does Trump do every time he is caught lying, criming, conspiring? He boasts "Of course! I did it to make money!" And that makes it alright----if you subscribe to the Christian Coalition's notion that all profitable endeavors are blessed by God, otherwise they would not turn a profit. Call it Fool's Calvinism (for Fool's Gold).

Jarred, the Mob Don's favorite son-in-law did not conspire to commit treason with a foreign power. No, he set up a back channel communication line with Russia to make money.

Trump did not prey upon home owners who lost their life's savings in the mortgage meltdown because he is a "bad dude." He did it because there was profit to be made and only an ungodly man turns away from an opportunity to make money.

Trump accepts bribes for everything from cabinet picks to border wall construction contracts to U.S. foreign policy , because it is a really easy way for a President to make money. And he has placed members of his family in key administration positions, because it is an easy way to make sure that all the bribe money he is making goes into the Trump Crime Family coffers. Because under Fool's Calvinism, money becomes more valuable if it is sitting on top of more money---making it closer to God in Heaven.

Both Citizens United and Bush v. Gore are results of Fool's Calvinism. In Bush v. Gore the court ruled based upon the identity of the parties in the case, because the Bush Family and their Rich (Oil, Energy and Saudi) Backers were obviously right---if not, God would not have made them so damned rich. In Citizens United, the court said that the richest corporations in the world have a god given right to determine the outcome of U.S. elections, because they are rich and the rich have been commanded by their Fool's Calvinist God to make more money.

Fool's Calvinism is the dogma of colonialists. When King Leopold's traders chopped off the hands of Africans in the Belgian Congo so that they could account for every bullet used, when New World settlers gave the natives small pox infected blankets----these atrocities were acts of worship for the devout Fool's Calvinist.

Fool's Calvinism is the dogma of environmental terrorists. The man who dares strip mine a mountain for the riches it contains, the company that dares destroy our world's climate in order to increase its quarterly returns---these are the faithful, the chosen. The earth is transient, but (to the Fool's Calvinist) money is forever. On the great cosmic ledger that God keeps at His side, the more zeros that follow the number beside your name, the closer you will be to the front row of the heavenly choir. And, as the Spanish Inquisition and Crusades taught us, All's Fair in War and Religion.

Under Fool's Calvinism, God will not be satisfied until all the world's wealth is piled up in two or three giant stacks of gold that reach all the way to the moon--and the rest of use bow down in awe and supplication to the beauty and majesty of God's creation. Because humanity, according to the Fool's Calvinist, is a pyramid scheme, and the guy at the top is at the top because God's wants it that way.

Praise God and pass the collection plate.
