New video shows Capitol rioters dragging a DC police officer and beating him with an American flag

...

D.C.'s Acting Police Chief Robert Contee said the images left him sick to his stomach. The officer was terrified they'd kill him, Contee said. The video is chilling to watch, the officer ripped by insurrectionists from a line inside a door, his fellow officers unable to help him.

...

"I've had officers that have done two tours in Iraq say that this was scarier than their time in combat," Contee said.

Another video shows the terrified officer finally pulled from the crowd, injured and barely able to hold up his head.

The chief said the rioters injured a total of 56 D.C. police officers. Social media detectives have grabbed images from the videos and are doing their best to identify the rioters.

Three Democrats Now Have COVID After Republicans Refused To Wear Masks During The Capitol Attack

Source: BuzzFeed News

Democratic Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Pramila Jayapal, and Brad Schneider have announced they tested positive for COVID-19, adding that they believed they were exposed to the virus while in protective isolation during the attack on the Capitol, where several of their colleagues refused to wear face masks.

"I received a positive test for COVID-19, and am home resting at this time," Coleman said in a statement, after testing positive Monday. "While I am experiencing mild, cold-like symptoms, I remain in good spirits and will continue to work on behalf of my constituents."

Jayapal also tested positive Monday and called out her Republican colleagues for refusing to wear masks while forced to isolate during the attack.

"Many Republicans still refused to take the bare minimum COVID-19 precaution and simply wear a damn mask in a crowded room during a pandemic — creating a superspreader event on top of a domestic terrorist attack," Jayapal said.

Trump blames Antifa for riot

Source: Axios

President Trump today privately — and falsely — blamed "Antifa people" for storming the Capitol, even though clear video and documentary evidence exists showing the rioters were overwhelmingly Trump supporters, Axios' Jonathan Swan reports.

...

Behind the scenes: In a tense, 30-minute-plus phone call this morning with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Trump trotted out the Antifa line.

McCarthy would have none of it, telling the president: "It's not Antifa, it's MAGA. I know. I was there," according to a White House official and another source familiar with the call.
The White House official said the call was tense and aggressive at times, with Trump ranting about election fraud and an exasperated McCarthy cutting in to say, "Stop it. It's over. The election is over."

Pence "discouraged, disheartened, hurt and stunned," source says

Source: CBS News

A former White House official with close ties to Vice President Mike Pence described the vice president as "discouraged, disheartened, hurt and stunned" by President Trump's treatment of him, and is "disgusted" by the storming of the Capitol on Wednesday.

The source said Pence never seriously considered using the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office. The source said that during conversations earlier in the administration, White House lawyers researched its applicability and found it really covered incapacity, due to things like a serious injury or undergoing anesthesia.

The source said it is Pence's goal to lay low this week, carrying out Coronavirus Task Force duties and making sure his presence is felt — if for no other reason than to steady traumatized staffers trying to make sense of their purpose in this strange time of inactivity and nervousness.

The source advised that Pence intends to do something to show a smooth transition of power, although what that might be has yet to be decided. Options include inviting the incoming president and vice president to the Naval Observatory, greeting the Bidens at the White House for a ceremonial tea, or greeting them at the Blair House and riding with them to the inauguration.

Cuba Named a State Sponsor of Terrorism by Trump Administration

Source: WSJ

WASHINGTON—The Trump administration is putting Cuba back on the list of countries that are considered to be state sponsors of terrorism, a senior U.S. official said, rescinding a 2015 move by the Obama administration to thaw ties to the onetime Cold War adversary.

The redesignation, which will be announced Monday, may complicate President-elect Joe Biden’s efforts to improve ties with Havana. It is the latest in a series of foreign policy steps the administration has taken in recent days to try to lock in policies before it leaves office.

The State Department list to which Cuba is being added includes Syria, Iran and North Korea. Cuba was removed from that list in 2015 as the Obama administration sought to build ties with the country, part of a campaign that included boosting commercial air travel, the reopening of embassies and a visit by President Obama to the country.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to argue that the move is justified because Cuba has given refuge to an American convicted of killing a New Jersey state trooper in 1973 and to cite other complaints against the Cuban government.

Conspiracy theorist congresswoman posts photo with Pompeo days after Capitol riot

Source: Kansas City Star

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo posed for a photo with a Colorado congresswoman who has promoted conspiracy theories and revealed details about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s whereabouts on social media during last week’s deadly siege of the U.S. Capitol.

Rep. Lauren Boebert, a freshman Colorado Republican, posted a photo on Twitter Sunday of herself with nation’s top diplomat — four days after supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in a riot that left five people dead, including a police officer, in the building where Pompeo worked for six years as a Kansas congressman.

...

“A sincere privilege to meet Secretary of State Pompeo, who has helped MAGA in so many ways. History will look kindly about how President Trump and he handled ISIS, Iran, Middle East peace deals, North Korea, China, etc. Secretary Pompeo is a true patriot!” Boebert said on Twitter Sunday.

The State Department did not respond to questions about the photograph, but a source close to Pompeo confirmed it was taken during Friday’s meeting of the Republican Study Committee.

DC Attorney General Reportedly Looking at Charging Trump for Inciting Capitol Riots

Source: Mediaite

The attorney general of Washington D.C. says he is considering charging President Donald Trump with inciting the violent attack on the Capitol building carried out by his supporters.

D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine is weighing charges for the president stemming from the Jan. 6 siege on the Capitol. CNN correspondent Evan Perez reported on the news, but says that Racine is taking an “expansive view of his powers” by claiming that charging the president is within his purview — rather than that of federal prosecutors.

“There is a limitation on what the attorney general’s office can really do here in Washington, D.C,” Perez said. “All criminal prosecutions generally are handled by the U.S. attorney.”

New York bar association investigates whether to revoke membership of Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani

Source: CNBC

The New York State Bar Association said Monday that it was launching a probe on whether to revoke the membership of Rudy Giuliani, the personal lawyer for President Donald Trump, over his violent rhetoric at a rally for the president before the Capitol riot last week as well as other actions.

The bar group said in a statement that the blame for the riot by thousands of the president’s supporters “lies first and foremost with” Trump, who has continued making false claims about his election loss to President-elect Joe Biden.

“But the president did not act alone,” the bar association noted.

“Hours before the angry mob stormed the Capitol walls, Trump’s personal attorney, Rudolph Giuliani, addressed a crowd of thousands at the White House, reiterating baseless claims of widespread election fraud in the presidential election and the Georgia U.S. Senate runoffs.”

FBI, NYPD told Capitol Police about possibility of violence before riot, senior officials say

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON — The FBI and the New York City Police Department passed information to U.S. Capitol Police about the possibility of violence during the protests Wednesday against the counting of the Electoral College vote, and the FBI even visited more than a dozen extremists already under investigation to urge them not to travel to Washington, senior law enforcement officials said.

The previously unreported details undercut the assertion by a top FBI official that officials had no indication that violence was a possibility, and they add to questions about what intelligence authorities had reviewed before the Capitol riot, which led to the death of an officer and four other people, including a rioter who was shot and killed by police.

"Social media is just part of a full intelligence picture, and while there was First Amendment-protected activity on social media to include some people making threats, to this point, investigators have not found that there was an organized plot to access the Capitol," a senior FBI official said.

...

Asked Friday whether the slow police response Wednesday was the result of an intelligence failure, the official who leads the FBI's Washington field office, Steven D'Antuono, said no. "There was no indication that there was anything [planned] other than First Amendment-protected activity," he said.
