Appalachian State tells students to 'remain vigilant' after student dies from coronavirus

Source: CNBC

A student attending Appalachian State University died after developing complications from the coronavirus, university officials announced on Tuesday.

...

According to an account from his family, Dorrill was encouraged to return home to quarantine after he began feeling ill and later tested positive. After initially following quarantine procedures, Dorrill’s doctor cleared him to return to Boone.

However, upon returning, Dorrill experienced additional complications and was later hospitalized, the university said.

“Despite generally being at lower risk for severe illness, college-age adults can become seriously ill from COVID-19,” Everts said in the statement. “As we approach the halfway mark to the last day of classes for the Fall semester, we are seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases in students.”

But Minnesota Republicans say the president’s best opportunity to keep the pressure on Biden in the traditionally blue state may have slipped through his fingers amid the shouting and name-calling at Tuesday night’s debate.

“Biden, especially in the first half of the debate, looked weak and it seemed that all the things Democrats worried about might come true,” said Amy Koch, a Republican and the former majority leader in the Minnesota state Senate. “But then Trump just overwhelmed and it was too much. It was over the top and rude and it felt desperate and bullying. He blew it. He did nothing to improve his standing with independents, women or suburban voters. In fact, he may have gone backwards with disaffected Republicans. He needed a strong performance and the opportunity was there and it was all lined up for him to knock it out of the park and he just whiffed.”

Trump aides struggle to defend Proud Boys remarks at debate

White House and campaign aides on Wednesday struggled to clean up President Trump's comments a night earlier in which he declined to explicitly condemn white supremacy, instead directing a far-right group to "stand back and stand by" during the first presidential debate.

...

Multiple Trump surrogates faced questions about the remarks during cable news hits, where they downplayed his calls for the group to "stand by" and pointed to the president's past denunciations of white supremacists.

"I don’t think that there’s anything to clarify," White House communications director Alyssa Farah said on Fox News.

"He’s told them to stand back. This president has surged federal resources when violent crime warrants it in cities. He’s leading. He doesn’t need any sort of vigilantism," she continued. "That’s never what we’ve called for. What we’ve called for is Democrat mayors and Democrat governors to call up the resources we’re prepared to make available."

Biden will keep debating Trump, campaign says

Source: The Hill

Joe Biden will continue to debate President Trump, his campaign said late Tuesday, even as political operatives blasted what they called a "train wreck" between the pair in their first debate.

"I don’t know how many different ways we can say it. Yes, we are going to do the debates," Biden deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield said in a post-debate call with reporters.

"I would imagine there will be some additional conversations [with the Commission on Presidential Debates]. But yeah, we are committing to attending the debates," she said.
