They died only a few hours apart

Feliks and Luiza Ogorodnik are the first Illinois couple in Illinois to both die from COVID-19.

A married couple who emigrated from Ukraine more than two decades ago died of coronavirus only hours apart over the weekend.

Feliks Ogorodnik, 88, and his wife, Luiza, 84, died Saturday at Glenbrook Hospital in suburban Glenview, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

They both died of pneumonia with COVID-19 and other preexisting conditions as contributing factors, the medical examiner’s office said.

Illinois governor: Federal government sent wrong type of masks

Source: The Hill

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) on Monday said that his state received the wrong type of medical masks from the federal government in a shipment meant to equip medical professionals responding to the coronavirus pandemic.

"My team is sorting through the shipment of 300,000 N95 masks the White House personally told me would be sent to our state, and while we do not have a final count on this yet, I can say with certainty that what they sent were not the N95 masks that were promised but instead were surgical masks, which is not what we asked for," he said at a press conference, according to CNN, which noted that doctors wear the N95 masks when interacting with infected patients.

Pritzker added the he couldn’t “emphasize enough how much we need the federal government to step up and amplify the size of their PPE [personal protective equipment] deliveries to Illinois and, frankly, across the nation.”

Last week, Pritzker and President Trump clashed online after the president attacked governors who criticized the federal response to coronavirus.

Fauci says task force 'argued strongly' with Trump to extend coronavirus guidelines

Source: The Hill

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said Monday that the White House coronavirus task force aggressively lobbied President Trump to extend social distancing guidelines another month as the U.S. grapples with the fallout of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

"We felt that if we prematurely pulled back, we would only form an acceleration or rebound of something, which would put you behind where you were before, and that’s a reason why we argued strongly with the president that he not withdraw those guidelines," Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on CNN's "New Day."

"And he did listen," Fauci added.

"When you look at the kinetics of the outbreak, the patterns that are going on now, even as we speak, they were not going to reach a peak and turnaround the way we wanted to, within the time frame originally estimated," he said, adding that he and Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus task force coordinator, showed these models to Trump on Sunday at the Oval Office.

"He looked at them, he understood them, and he shook his head and said, 'I guess we got to do it,'" Fauci continued.

Infant Among 47 Now Dead From Coronavirus In Illinois: 'Today Is A Really Hard Day'

Source: Block Club Chicago

CHICAGO — An infant and a state employee are the latest victims of COVID-19 in Illinois, Gov. JB Pritzker announced at a devastating Saturday news conference.

The announcement came after the deadliest 24 hours yet in the state, with 13 more people dead and 465 new confirmed cases since Friday.

As of Saturday, there have been 3,491 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state and 47 people have died. Since the crisis began, 25,429 people have been tested here.

“May their memories be a blessing,” Pritzker said of the dead.

Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said though the majority of victims are older Illinoisans, the baby who died did have COVID-19. The department is investigating the infant’s death.

16 Coronavirus Deaths: (IL Gov.) Pritkzer 'Not Willing To Sacrifice Anyone'

Source: Patch

And while seeing the economy slow down "keeps me up at night," Pritzker said, "You can't have a livelihood without a life. As long as Americans have breath in their lungs, we will find a way to survive and to thrive.

"We can revive our economy," Pritzker said. "We can't revive the people who are lost to this virus."

Referring to situations faced in other countries, such as Italy, where doctors have had to choose who gets a ventilator and who doesn't, Pritzker said. "I'm not willing to sacrifice anyone. There is no life in this state that is more or less precious than any other."

Trump: Cuomo 'supposed to be buying his own ventilators'

Source: The Hill

“He's supposed to be buying his own ventilators,” Trump said.

“We're going to help, but if you think about Governor Cuomo, we're building him four hospitals, we're building him four medical centers. We're working very, very hard for the people of New York.”

He added that Cuomo had the chance to buy 16,000 ventilators in 2015 but didn’t do so.

It is not clear what Trump was talking about, but an opinion piece in the New York Post last week made a similar claim. Trump frequently repeats ideas and arguments he has read in conservative media.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for clarification.

United States could become coronavirus epicenter: WHO

Source: Reuters

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States has the potential to become the new epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic due to a "very large acceleration" in infections there, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday.

The highly contagious respiratory virus has infected more than 42,000 people in the United States, prompting more governors to join states ordering Americans to stay at home.

Over the past 24 hours, 85 percent of new cases worldwide were from Europe and the United States, WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told reporters. Of those, 40 percent were from the United States.

Asked whether the United States could become the new epicenter, she said: "We are now seeing a very large acceleration in cases in the U.S. So it does have that potential. We cannot say that is the case yet but it does have that potential."

"...They (the United States) have a very large outbreak and an outbreak that is increasing in intensity," Harris added.

Dow wipes out all the gains since Trump's election

Source: CNBC

President Donald Trump has long pointed to the stock market’s success under his administration as a tangible endorsement of his economic policies and had often boasted about the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s gains since his election. That was, of course, before investors knew about the new coronavirus.

With COVID-19 and measures to contain its spread seeding economic angst across the globe, the Dow’s steep drop on Monday pushed the 30-stock index below the level where it closed on Nov. 8, 2016, the day Trump won the 2016 election over Democrat Hillary Clinton.

The sell-off is part of a historic market meltdown that has sent the Dow down nearly 40% since last month.

Dow Industrials fell 841.24 points, or 4.39%, to trade below its close on Election Day 2016 at 18,332.74. The sell-off on the week’s first day of trading put the index down more than 38% from its all-time high notched in February. The S&P 500 was more than 30% below its February high by Friday’s close.

'Where Were The Tests When We Needed Them?': Trump, Pritzker Spar On Federal COVID-19 Response As Il

Source: Block Club Chicago

During Pritzker’s Sunday COVID-19 news conference, the governor said he was “finding it hard” to contain his anger with Trump’s response to this crisis.

“Donald Trump promised to deliver for all the states weeks ago and so far has done very little,” Pritzker said. “Apparently the only way to get the president of the United States to pay attention is to go on national television and make noise about it.”

On March 6, Trump said anyone “wants a test can get a test,” which was not true anywhere in the country at that point or now.

Test kit availability has increased, but supplies are still extremely limited so people with mild symptoms are urged to stay home and not get tested.
