The Hill President Trump on Thursday doubled down on his comments the U.S. should have taken oil from the Middle East during its wars there.
“We’ve spent $6 trillion … in the Middle East,” Trump said during a meeting with airline executives at the White House. “We’ve got nothing. We’ve got nothing. We never even kept a small, even a tiny oil well. Not one little oil well. I said, ‘Keep the oil.’”
The president argued the money would have been better spent on massive new infrastructure projects in the U.S.
“We have an obsolete plane system, we have obsolete airports, we have obsolete trains, we have bad roads,” he said. “We're gonna change all of that, folks. You're gonna be so happy with Trump. I think you already are.”
Trump for years has said the U.S. should have kept Iraq’s oil after overthrowing Saddam Hussein. But many legal experts say doing so could have violated international law.
