Source: The Daily Beast
The pro-Trump rioters who stormed the Capitol building on Jan. 6 assaulted at least 139 police officers, U.S. prosecutors have alleged. According to the Washington Post, prosecutors for the U.S. attorneys office in Washington, D.C. filed papers on Sunday that repeatedly described the storming of Congress an insurrection, and said it resulted in the deaths of five people and assaults on around 81 Capitol Police and a further 58 D.C. police officers. Every person who was present without authority in the Capitol on Jan. 6 contributed to the chaos of that day and the danger posed to law enforcement, the Vice President, Members of Congress, and the peaceful transfer of power, wrote prosecutors with the public corruption unit of the Washington U.S. attorneys office. One of the dead was police officer Brian Sicknick, who died a day after the riots from injuries he sustained while physically engaging with protesters.

Portman won't run for reelection
Source: The Hill
Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) will not seek reelection to a third term in 2022, he announced Monday morning.
Portman plans to make the announcement at a press conference in Cincinnati. In a statement, Portman cited political partisanship as a factor in his decision.
We live in an increasingly polarized country where members of both parties are being pushed further to the right and further to the left, and that means too few people who are actively looking to find common ground, he said. This is not a new phenomenon, of course, but a problem that has gotten worse over the past few decades.

Ezra Cohen (former Pentagon official): "The president (Trump) threw us under the bus"
https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/01/embedding-with-pentagon-leadership-in-trumps-chaotic-last-weekTHE PRESIDENT THREW US UNDER THE BUS: EMBEDDING WITH PENTAGON LEADERSHIP IN TRUMPS CHAOTIC LAST WEEK
...
Miller and Patel both insisted, in separate conversations, that they neither tried nor needed to contact the president on January 6; they had already gotten approval to deploy forces. However, another senior defense official remembered things quite differently, They couldnt get through. They tried to call himmeaning the president. The implication: Either Trump was shell-shocked, effectively abdicating his role as commander in chief, or he was deliberately stiff-arming some of his top officials because he was, in effect, siding with the insurrectionists and their cause of denying Bidens victory.
...
Ezra Cohen, another of Millers top confidants, believes that his colleagues words and deeds may be well and good, but are beside the point: The president threw us under the bus. And when I say us, I dont mean only us political appointees or only us Republicans. He threw America under the bus. He caused a lot of damage to the fabric of this country. Did he go and storm the Capitol himself? No. But he, I believe, had an opportunity to tamp things down and he chose not to. And thats really the fatal flaw. I mean, hes in charge. And when youre in charge, youre responsible for what goes wrong.
Trump Campaign Paid Organizers of Pre-Riot Rally $2.7 Million

Former President Donald Trumps campaign paid more than $2.7 million to individuals and firms that organized the Jan. 6 rally that led to violent rioters storming the U.S. Capitol, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
The payments, which span Trumps re-election campaign, show an ongoing financial relationship between the rallys organizers and Trumps political operation. Authorities found sniper rifle, handcuffs in home of accused 'zip tie guy' in Capitol riot
Source: USA Today/Nashville Tennessean
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Federal agents recovered a sniper rifle and more than a dozen high-powered weapons from the home of Eric Munchel, a Nashville man charged in connection with this month's U.S. Capitol riot and storming in Washington D.C., new court documents show.
They also found a tactical vest covered in patches and a set of plastic restraints that match those that caught the attention of social media users in the aftermath of the riot and led to the nickname "zip tie guy."
The items, discovered when federal agents searched his home, are among several reasons why federal prosecutors plan to argue Munchel should remain in custody as his case proceeds, according to a a motion filed Wednesday in Middle Tennessee U.S. District Court.
The 31-page memo signed by federal prosecutors was filed in advance of a hearing set Friday to determine whether a judge will approve him to be released from custody.

PayPal boots Jenna Ryan, the Texas real estate agent who flew a private jet to the Capitol riots
Source: CBS News
The Texas-based real estate agent who traveled to the January 6 Capitol riots in a private plane was kicked off PayPal Thursday evening after attempting to solicit donations for business losses.
Jenna Ryan, who was arrested last week, asked her Twitter followers for help Thursday afternoon, sharing a link to a PayPal account where supporters could offer a donation. In a tweet, Ryan said, "I am accepting donations to pay legal fees and losses due to my arrest and charges by the FBI" and later claimed she had raised $1,000.
By Thursday evening, PayPal had closed the account, according to Kim Eichorn, a PayPal spokesperson.
"PayPal has a policy to allow fundraising for legal defense purposes," Eichorn said in an email to CBS News. "PayPal thoroughly reviews accounts, and if we learn that funds are used for anything other than legal defense, the account will be subject to immediate closure. We can confirm that the account in question has been closed."

Congresswoman Greene files articles of impeachment against President Biden
Source: CBS46
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene made good on her promise Thursday when she announced the filing of articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden.
Greene, who has made waves in her first few days in office, is most known for supporting the debunked and false QAnon conspiracy. Twitter temporarily suspended her account after she tweeted out conspiracy theories about problems with the Georgia elections, which ironically, put her into Congress.
The articles of impeachment likely won't move forward in the 117th Congress. Democrats control both chambers of Congress and won't consider impeaching President Biden.
Greene took to Twitter Thursday saying the "inauguration looked like a one party military state takeover with 30k troops." The troops were brought in to secure the Capitol and surrounding areas after the insurrection from supporters of former President Donald Trump on January 6. She also called Biden a "clueless Grandpa" in a Tweet on Wednesday.

Ossoff sworn in on Hebrew Bible from synagogue bombed by white supremacists in the 1950s
Source: The Hill
Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) used a Hebrew Bible from a historic Atlanta synagogue active in the Civil Rights movement during his Senate swearing-in ceremony Wednesday afternoon, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The newly-seated senator told the newspaper that his use of a Hebrew Bible from the Hebrew Benevolent Congregation Temple was a nod to the southern Jewish community's ties to the civil rights movement. The bible was once owned by Rabbi Jacob Rothschild, who forged close ties with Black leaders including Martin Luther King Jr. during his time as leader of the synagogue. White supremacists bombed the Temple in 1958, though no one was injured.
Ossoff, who is Jewish, has pointed to his win as well as fellow Georgian Sen. Raphael Warnock's (D-Ga.) win in Georgia's Senate runoff elections as evidence of Georgia's progress on the issue of racial equality. The senator earned his Bar Mitzvah at the Temple, according to the AJC.
That book isnt just about the synagogue and my Jewish background, Ossoff told the newspaper before his swearing in this week. Its also about the necessity of reanimating the spirit of the civil rights movement and building alliances to pass landmark civil rights legislation.

Man who repeatedly struck downed officer with hockey stick arrested, DOJ says
Source: wusa9
WASHINGTON A Michigan man accused of assaulting police officers with a hockey stick during the Capitol riot was taken into custody Thursday.
In a probable cause affidavit filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, federal prosecutors say Michael Joseph Foy, of Westland, Michigan was captured on video using a hockey stick to strike DC Police officers who were trying to protect a Capitol Police officer who had been knocked down and dragged into a crowd of rioters.
According to the affidavit, Foy continued attacking the officers with the hockey stick for 16 seconds, until he was knocked down himself by another rioter. He allegedly then got back up and pointed to the Capitol building and said, Lets go. Investigators said they identified footage of him 10 minutes later crawling through a broken window into the Capitol Building.
Investigators reportedly also found other footage of Foy assaulting a law enforcement officer on the ground. The footage, investigators said, shows Foy lifting the stick above his head and swinging it down rapidly, striking an individual on the ground several times.
