Biden expected to address Washington riots and crisis in afternoon remarks

Source: CNN

President-elect Joe Biden is at The Queen theater in downtown Wilmington, Delaware, where he was giving remarks on Covid-19, the economy and the Georgia election results.

An aide tells CNN that Biden has been monitoring and is expected to address the violent protests escalating in Washington.

He had planned to say “it’s time to turn the page,” as he expressed in his morning statement, but his exact words are still being considered.

Pence says he lacks authority to throw out Electoral College votes

Source: Axios

Vice President Mike Pence said on Wednesday that he lacked constitutional authority to follow President Trump's wishes to throw out Electoral College votes for President-elect Joe Biden.

What he's saying: "It is my considered judgement that my oath to support and defend the Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not. "

GOP officials, donors blame Trump for weak Republican showing in Georgia runoffs

Source: CNBC

Republican officials, donors and advisors, many of them behind the scenes, blamed President Donald Trump for the party’s poor showing in the Senate runoff elections in the once reliably red state of Georgia.

“Trump f----d the party,” a staunch Trump ally said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The president, this campaign official said, “just made people not trust the system and made it tough for candidates to take positions for their states.”

...

A GOP strategist with ties to Trump critic Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah., said the losses will lead to the Republican Party splitting. This will, in turn, lead to “the beginning of a long war of attrition,” including vicious battles in “primaries for 2022 races, and eventually the 2024 primary.”

Romney himself appeared to take aim at Trump on Wednesday. “It turns out telling voters the election is rigged is not a good way to turn out your voters,” said Romney, a former Republican presidential nominee who was the only member of his party to vote to remove Trump during the impeachment trial last year.

Police: Protesters outside Sen. Josh Hawley's home were 'peaceful'

Source: STL Post Dispatch

Protesters who gathered outside the Virginia home of Republican Sen. Josh Hawley Monday evening were peaceful and they left when police explained they were violating local picketing laws, police said Tuesday. The Missouri senator claimed on Twitter that the group had been engaged in “leftwing violence.”

Officers were called to Hawley’s home in Vienna, a Washington suburb, home around 7:45 p.m. after someone reported that there were “people protesting in front of the house.” Officers who responded to the scene found that the “people were peaceful,” said Master Police Officer Juan Vazquez, a spokesman for the Town of Vienna Police Department.

The demonstrators said they went to Hawley’s home because he said he would object when Congress convenes Wednesday to affirm Joe Biden’s election victory.

Vazquez said the protesters had been violating several laws, including a Virginia code about picketing in front of a house, a town ordinance about making noise in front of a home and a littering code. But he said the officers explained the violations and “everyone just left.”

Sen. Tim Scott will vote to certify Biden's Electoral College win

Source: Axios

Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) will certify Joe Biden's Electoral College win, refusing to join the growing number of Republicans planning to object to the process, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: Scott, who joins several veteran Republican senators standing firm against President Trump's efforts to overturn his legitimate election defeat, sparked buzz about a 2024 presidential run after getting the red carpet treatment at the Republican National Convention in August.

The big picture: Scott's argument echoes that of other pro-Trump dissenters, like Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah), who are worried about the precedent that will be set by their GOP colleagues' effort and the potential damage to American democracy.

As the only Black Republican in the U.S. Senate, Scott has played an important role as the party seeks to expand its appeal to a more diverse group of voters.

John Cornyn says he won't join growing number of Texas Republicans planning to object to certificati

Source: wfaa/Texas Tribune

THE TEXAS TRIBUNE – U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, announced Tuesday that he isn't planning to object to the certification of the Electoral College vote in Congress, splitting with a growing number of GOP colleagues that most notably includes the state’s junior senator, Ted Cruz.

In a lengthy letter to Texans, Cornyn noted that he has supported President Donald Trump’s right to challenge election results in the courts but that Trump's lawsuits have gone nowhere, and recounts in multiple states have also failed to change the outcome. Trump has continued to push baseless claims of widespread fraud in the election, including at a campaign rally Monday night in Georgia.

"As a former judge, I view this process with the same impartial, evidence-based decision-making as I did my job on the bench,” wrote Cornyn, a former justice on the Texas Supreme Court. “So, unless substantial, new evidence is presented during the challenges to each state’s ballots, I will not object to the certification of that state’s election results based on unproven allegations.”

Cornyn’s position is not much of a surprise based on comments he has made in recent weeks expressing increasing skepticism about Trump’s chances of overturning his loss to the president-elect, Joe Biden. But the letter marks Cornyn’s most extensive explanation of his position yet, and it comes as Texas’ other senator digs in on his plan, along with 10 other GOP senators, to object to the Wednesday certification of Biden's win unless they can secure an "emergency audit" of the November results.

GA Sec of State Intern hangs up on White House 18 times thinking it's a hoax

https://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/us-elections-government/ny-election-trump-georgia-20210105-bax6ztfaxfhxtpkycruv6kngpq-story.html

An intern in Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office reportedly rebuffed 18 efforts by the White House because it was believed the outreach was a prank.

First reported by Bloomberg, unnamed junior staff hung up on the office of the world’s most powerful man several times trying to reach the state’s top election official to discuss overturning his loss in the presidential election.

Trump finally got through to Raffensperger after White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows obtained cell phone information for Raffensperger and his top aides, a top aide to the Georgia Republican told reporters.

Trump not allowed into Scotland to escape Biden inauguration, Sturgeon warns

Source: Independent UK

Donald Trump will not be allowed to visit Scotland to play golf during Joe Biden's inauguration, Nicola Sturgeon has said.

The US president, who was overwhelmingly defeated in November's election, is reportedly considering travelling to his Turnberry golf resort to avoid Mr Biden being sworn into office.

But Scotland's first minister stressed it is illegal to travel in or out of the country without a valid reason and said: "Coming to play golf is not what I would consider to be an essential purpose."

...

But Prestwick Airport has been told to expect the arrival of a US military Boeing 757 aircraft previously used by Mr Trump on 19 January, according to the Sunday Post.
