"As you know, my primary focus has been the Senate."

That’s what Trump has been saying. You know what it really means? It means he’s distancing himself from the House. It means he thinks we will take the House. If he thought Republicans were going to hold it, he’d be jabbering on about “that big, beautiful, Republican House” or some other stupid bullshit like that.

I find that encouraging.

Sayoc is the MAGABOMBER. That makes Trump the MAGALOMANIAC.

Or maybe the MAGAMIND. Of course, that’s not much of a mind at all.

I think that needs to be repeated as much as possible. And Trump encourages right-wing domestic terrorism.

This was a defeat - but not a permanent one.

By no means was it a permanent one.

Take the House in 2018 and play hardball, and we freeze the Trump presidency in its tracks. Take the Senate and Presidency in 2020, and we can start to reverse the damage done during the Trump presidency. Keep the Senate and Presidency through 2028, and we will most likely be able to replace Thomas, Ginsburg, and Breyer. If that happens, we retake a 5-4 majority. Alito will be 70 in 2020. Keep the Senate and Presidency to 2018 and we might replace him, too.

10 years of sustained effort, and we can completely turn this around. No reason to give up hope. This is the time to dig in. Demographics are changing in our favor. Millenials are less racist, less sexist, and less religious. Dig in, fight, and always remember how today feels when you're in the voting booth.

Kavanaugh was inevitable.

INEVITABLE. The reason why his confirmation was inevitable was because of the Republican majority in the Senate. I do not understand how some on this board even entertained the idea that this vote would go another way. Pinning your hopes on Republicans doing the right thing? Come ON. These are the same assholes who gave Trump multiple standing ovations at his State of the Union address. They don't give a damn about anything except their political agenda. And they don't have to. No matter what kind of repugnant crap they vote for, they've always got Fox News to back them and to convince their base that they're doing exactly the right thing. They don't have to fear consequences because there are none.

I saw some threads about not being negative, etc. directed at posters who tried to remind everyone of these basic facts - to anyone who interrupted the pleasant and completely unrealistic dreams of a Kavanaugh defeat. People, you need clear eyes and a cold heart and to recognize the reality of the situation. There are some very unpleasant facts to deal with. The first fact is that there is a sizable portion of the country who does not think as we do. The second is that they are absolutely dedicated to voting in every election. The third is that Republicans have systematically rigged the system against us, with more money, with corruptible voting machines, with infringements on voting rights, and with gerrymandered districts. The fifth is that they have a massive media empire, both TV and radio, completely dedicated to advancing an extreme agenda, giving cover to Republicans, and convincing people to vote against their own interests.

It will take a long period of sustained effort to overcome these obstacles. The only real way to offset the defeats we've taken in the past few years - the loss of Congress, the loss of two Supreme Court seats - is to capture and keep the Presidency and the Senate. We are in line for at least two more years of abject misery unless we can take the Senate, which is highly unlikely. We will have to take Congress and the Senate in 2020, and keep the House. Then we can restore some fairness to congressional districting following the 2020 Census. And we desperately need to keep the Senate and the Presidency until 2028. During those 8 years, seats will most likely open up from Ginsburg, Thomas, and Breyer. If we can put liberal justices into those seats, we retake the Court. It will require long-term dedication and it will be very difficult.

Getting your hopes up for something completely unrealistic like a denial of Kavanaugh is unproductive. I hate that this appointment happened, but I'm not surprised. Elections have consequences. We're feeling them. Don't blow the next one because you're impatient or frustrated.

The goalposts, they are a-movin'

As sung by Fox News, with (abject) apologies to Bob Dylan...

Come gather 'round Russians
And North Koreans
And all of our enemies
We love on Fox Friends
And accept it that soon
There was no collusion.
If your truth to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start runnin’
Or you'll be left alone
For the goalposts they are a-movin'.

Come writers and pundits
Who ‘fake news’ with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
For more payments again
And don't speak too soon
Huckabee’s still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That she's namin'.
For the loser now
Used to be he who would win
For the goalposts they are a-movin’.

Come senators, congressmen
Republicans all
Abandon all principles
If you had them at all
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a Donald outside
And he is tweetin'.
And what was outrageous
Is now normalized
For the goalposts they are a-movin'.

Come you Fox News viewers
Throughout the land
And don't be thinkin’
We will do that for you
Your sons and your daughters
Belong to us too
Your old thoughts are
Rapidly agin'.
Please follow the new ones
We will give them to you
For the goalposts they are a-movin'.

The rats squeaking now
Will abandon their ship
The true fixer now
Will later be flipped
And Hannity now
Will later be past
His story is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first line now
Will later be last
For the goalposts they are a-movin’.
