Steel, which goes into nearly everything from skyscrapers to cookware, has become symbolic for what ails China, the world’s largest consumer of it. After years of colossal manufacturing and building booms, soaring demand for steel, and ballooning steel-making capacity, everything has curdled.

The average price of steel in China has collapsed 30.6% so far this year, after having already fallen four years in a row: 7.8% in 2011, 11.6% in 2012, 7.6% in 2013, and 16% in 2014, according to data from Beijing Lange Steel Information Research Center, cited by the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party.

Despite the crashing price, steelmakers have raised production: 881 million tons in 2011, 951 million tons in 2012, 1.07 billion tons in 2013, and 1.13 billion tons in 2014.

And just then, China’s miracle build-it-and-they-will-come, overstimulated, debt-bloated economy began plowing into a slowdown. According to data from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), steel consumption has begun to fall: down 3.4% to 738.3 million tons in 2014.

Steel consumption is likely to fall even more this year – now that new construction has caved, down 13.9% through October, that investment in the real estate sector is languishing, and that auto manufacturing was getting mauled, with sales plunging below last year’s level during the summer. ....................(more)

Michigan woman pouts after losing gun permit for shooting at shoplifters: ‘I will never help anybody again’


A Michigan woman complained after her sentencing that she was only trying to help when she opened fire at a pair of fleeing shoplifting suspects.

Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez pleaded no contest shortly after the October shooting to reckless discharge of a firearm, and she was sentenced Wednesday to 18 months of probation.

Her concealed carry permit was also revoked until 2023.

The 46-year-old Duva-Rodriguez said she opened fire on the getaway car in a Home Depot parking lot in Auburn Hills after she heard a scream and feared the incident was worse than a theft.

“I made a decision in a split second,” she told the sentencing judge. “Maybe it was not the right one, but I was trying to help.”

Neither shoplifting suspect was wounded, although a gunshot flattened one of their tires, and both men were later arrested. ..................(more)

Plano TX Muslim family gets car windows smashed twice in last week

A Muslim family in Plano, Texas fear that they may have been targeted with a hate crime after rocks smashed through their windows at least two times in the last week.

The family told KTVT that they moved to Plano six weeks ago, and that they believe that the people throwing the rocks may be sending a message about their religion.

Windows in the home have been smashed twice in the last two days. At their request, the names of the family members were not being released.

Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) spokesperson Alia Salem explained to KTVT that there had been a spike in anti-Muslim hate crimes in recent weeks. ...................(more)

NYC: Muslim store owner in tears after he’s beaten by man on mission to ‘kill Muslims’

A Muslim store owner in Queens reported that he was attacked over the weekend by a man who said that he wanted to “kill Muslims.”

Fatima Food Mart owner Sarker Haque told WPIX that the man came into his store on Saturday and began punching him.

“He punched me here,” Haque recalled, motioning toward an ice cream cooler. “I fell down here… I say, ‘What the hell you doing? What’s wrong with you?’ (The attacker) said, ‘I kill Muslims.'”

“He punched me as much as he can with his left hand,” the store owner added, choking back tears. “He grabbed me here. Then he punched me here.”

The attacker was identified by police as Piro Kolvani. Investigators believe that Kolvani punched Haque multiple times before a Latino customer intervened. .................(more)

Delaware cop gets off scot-free after punting innocent black man’s head like a football on video

Officer Thomas Webster of the Dover Police Department was finally indicted last May for kicking a man in the face during a despicable act of police incompetence in August of 2013. The attack was captured on the dash camera on another officer’s car, which showed the victim, Latif Dickerson getting kicked in the face by Webster as he was complying with the officer’s orders.

Dover Police Lt. Jason Pires said that the department chose to release the video immediately after the indictment to “control the narrative,” after keeping it secret for nearly two years.

“We released the video because the judge considered it no longer to be confidential. We’re a very transparent police department, and we feel that we handled this situation properly,“ Pires said.

In the attack, Dickerson was knocked out and had his jaw broken despite never being guilty of committing any crime. Dickerson just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was on his knees with his hands on the ground when Webster delivered the jaw-shattering kick, leaving him unconscious.

Webster’s defense during the trial was nothing short of laughable, yet, somehow, it worked.

“I wasn’t intending to kick him in the head. I was intending to kick him in the body,” Webster testified to the grand jury. He then claimed that he was in “fear for his life,” because they were looking for an armed black man with a yellow shirt and their incompetence led them to an innocent unarmed black man with a yellow hat instead.

The jury bought this ridiculous excuse for severely injuring an innocent man, whose only fault was to cross paths with this abusive tyrant. After a deliberation that lasted over three days, on Tuesday, the jury found Webster not guilty on both felony and misdemeanor charges of assault. ..................(more)

There's a mysterious new lime green rectangle of color in the black pavement at 11th and Main streets in downtown Kansas City.

It's intended just for cyclists — a painted "bike box" to give them a head start in front of the cars at that tricky intersection.

But Deb Ridgway, bicycle pedestrian coordinator for Kansas City, wasn't surprised Friday to see cars just rolling right into the green space without stopping at the white border that should now be their stopping point when the light is red.

"They don't see this stop border," she said. "It's a little confusing."

It should soon become less confusing and even more noticeable.

The location will soon have white bicycle decals in the green box, making it clearer that it's designated for cyclists. .........(more)

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — When Kathy Grimes heard Donald Trump had proposed a ban on Muslim immigrants, she didn't believe it — even when shown the press release.

"It is inflammatory. It's polarizing. Islam is supposed to be the religion of peace," said Grimes, a 67-year-old California resident who came to Trump's rally Monday here while in the area for vacation. Perhaps, she said, one of his staff members got the details wrong in writing the statement.

But when Trump himself read the release, word for word, to a standing-room-only rally aboard the USS Yorktown, much of the crowd stood and applauded.

Trump cited a questionable online poll conducted by the Center for Security Policy, an organization with an anti-Muslim reputation. The poll found 25% of Muslim-American respondents thought violence against Americans is justified. "These are people who are here, by the way," Trump said.

"They're in Detroit!" a man yelled, referencing the sizable Middle Eastern population in Detroit's suburbs. A few people chuckled. .................(more)
