question about UK nobility

Hi, it's me, Steve the curious Anglophile again. I was talking to someone today, and she told me that some barons and baronesses in the UK are not wealthy, because of taxes enacted after World War I. They (the nobility) were not able to maintain their estates because of the taxes. I had always assumed that anyone with a title in the UK, had to be wealthy (a millionaire or more).

Accurate info ? Thanks in advance.

(President Jimmy) Carter: 'Nutcases' are stopping climate action

http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/215027-carter-nutcases-are-stopping-climate-action

Former President Carter says climate skeptics are the "biggest handicap" for the U.S. when it comes to acting on global warming.

“I would say the biggest handicap we have right now is some nutcases in our country that don’t believe in global warming,” Carter said Tuesday during the American Renewable Energy Day summit in Aspen, Colo.

“I think they are going to change their position because of pressure from individuals, because the evidence of the ravages of global warming is already there," he added.

The 39th president expressed frustration with the administration and Congress on their lack of efforts to mitigate climate change, arguing that the U.S. is lagging behind other countries on the issue, the Aspen Times reports.

Memories of Robin Williams (from sfgate.com, his local paper)

-- Comedian Don Novello had known Williams since 1973, when "We both worked together at Intersection. ... We started doing stand-up at the same time. I started three months before him, so I gave him advice. But from the beginning he was just great. And he just never changed, he was the nicest person." Was there a sadness about him? "Sure, well, he was a comedian. He went through some stuff, divorce. I saw him working with those things. But he stayed just the same person, as kind and nice and caring as he was when he had no fame."

-- "I will never forget the day I met him and he stood on his head in my office chair and pretended to drink a glass of water using his finger like a straw," said a statement from Garry Marshall, who'd hired young Williams to appear in "Mork and Mindy." "The first season of 'Mork and Mindy' I knew immediately that a three-camera format would not be enough to capture Robin and his genius talent. So I hired a fourth camera operator and he just followed Robin. Only Robin. Looking back, four cameras weren't enough. I should have hired a fifth camera to follow him, too."

-- Bill Irwin, who appeared in New York with Williams in a 1988 production "Waiting for Godot," but much earlier had known him in San Francisco, wrote, "I was on stage with Robin only a few times in any kind of improv. And for only a few moments of that did I feel close to being a partner or an equal player. But the rest of the time, I knew Robin would carry me - he could carry anyone. If you tried to compete he could leave you in ribbons, but if you looked to him for help he could guide you through to a safe landing. He was a warrior, but a man of great generosity."

-- Designer Stanlee Gatti knew him "for quite some time. I guess people have to meet someone only once to know someone was unhappy. ... I always think we feel worse when someone dies when you know that person had hurt and grief in their life. ... People can look at someone like Robin Williams and say, my God, he was rich and famous... But this is the hard thing about comedians. He was brilliant, but he was not normal. He was really not and we loved him because he was not normal."

Robin Williams Will Be Memorialized In ‘World Of Warcraft,’ One Of His Favorite Games

http://www.businessinsider.com/robin-williams-will-live-on-in-world-of-warcraft-one-of-his-favorite-games-2014-8

Things move quickly on the internet, especially when a tragedy brings millions of fans together.

In the case of Robin Williams, thousands of fans quickly responded to a petition asking game developer Activision-Blizzard to insert the late comedian into one of his favorite video games, "World of Warcraft."

In less than 16 hours, organizer Jacob Holgate found 10,000-plus fans to sign his petition, and the company responded in kind, according to IGN's David Witmer.

“World of Warcraft” technical game designer Chadd Nervig responded to Holgate on Twitter:

Invest 94L moves west, not likely to become a tropical storm or hurricane

Last Updated 8/12/2014, 2:00:00 AM (Eastern Daylight Time)
Location 13.0 33.0W Movement W at 25 mph
Wind 25 MPH

Tropical wave 94L was located near 14°N, 35°W on Tuesday morning, but is no longer a threat to develop. Satellite loops show that the wave has lost nearly all of its heavy thunderstorms, and water vapor satellite images and the Saharan Air Layer analysis show that 94L is now embedded in a very dry environment. The wave should arrive in the Lesser Antilles Islands on Saturday, bringing gusty winds and heavy rain showers. None of the reliable computer models for predicting tropical storm formation (the GFS, European, and UKMET) develop 94L or anything else in the Atlantic during the coming five days. In their 8 am EDT Tuesday Tropical Weather Outlook, NHC gave 94L a 0% chance of developing. Like last year, the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean continue to be dominated by high pressure and dry, sinking air, which discourages tropical storm formation. The latest 2-week run of the GFS model shows this pattern continuing into at least the last week of August.

REMINDER: You Are 'Shockingly' Terrible At Investing

Yes, that is the original article title.

http://www.businessinsider.com/typical-investor-returns-20-years-2014-8

Most people are just terrible at investing. We hear about this frequently.

One big problem is that investors often find themselves buying at highs and selling at lows, especially when volatility picks up and patience is tested.

"Amidst difficult financial times, emotional instincts often drive investors to take actions that make no rational sense but make perfect emotional sense," said BlackRock back in 2012. "Psychological factors such as fear often translate into poor timing of buys and sells."

Richard Bernstein of Richard Bernstein Advisors considers twenty years of historical data for this in a new research note.

Maserati patrol car raises police suspicions

http://www.news965.com/ap/ap/strange/maserati-patrol-car-raises-police-suspicions/ngzhp/

BRAINTREE, Mass. — Police patrol cars are usually Fords or Chryslers, not Maseratis.

So when a patrolman in Braintree, Massachusetts, spotted a Maserati resembling a police cruiser over the weekend, he pulled it over.

Deputy Chief Wayne Foster tells The Patriot Ledger (http://bit.ly/1rm0c8x ) the luxury Italian vehicle's body was painted black and white with a police-style shield on the doors, and police-related decals.

Foster said the door shield wasn't accompanied by the usual police phrase "Protect and Serve," but rather with "Decepticons punish and enslave."
