Dennis Hastert aside, it shouldn't be a crime to take your own money out of the bank

without the government' s knowledge and approval. Another part of the Patriot Act that needs to go. Of course Hastert rushed to put the Patriot Act on all of us, and you know, sorry buddy, but the law's the law; but in the big picture that's a ridiculous, fascist law.

Republican economists have been wrong about everything

Since about 1925, yet the President is listening to their supply side snake oil blather about "free trade". It should make all of us angry. It's just utter nonsense. The President deserves an embarrassing and crushing defeat on this. When you side with Paul Ryan and his ilk of heartless Republican psychopaths against working people that's just what you deserve.

If you fuck your President, you aren't leader

Seems simple enough to me.

I'm watching the train wreck here in Indiana

I keep wondering if THIS will finally be the thing that makes average, non-lunatic, Hoosiers finally stop constantly voting against their self interest to rise up against these jerks. Just as interesting will be whether my party seizes the moment and embraces real Democratic and progressive positions after a long, mostly failed history of Republican-light politics. Strange days indeed.

At 45, I was easily the youngest person in line to vote this morning.

Light turnout, and no one under 60. Most closer to 75.

Guantanamo prison is illegal

Indefinite detention and "interrogation camps" in general both violate the Geneva Convention. Detention without charge or trial for over a decade is unconstitutional and un-American. Swap or no swap, those people still there should given trials immediately (which, after 10 years isn't exactly Due Process is it?) or immediately released.

What's it going to take?

As long as Republicans control state legislatures and can gerrymander 90% Republican districts, we are going to be dealing with this kind of craziness. The only way I see it changing is for the crazy conservatives in these places to somehow see the error in their ways and to stop buying into the horrible, destructive snake oil the Republicans are selling. It's not the "average American". It's the hardcore conservatives in these districts. I just don't see what's going make that happen. The horrible George Bush administration couldn't do it. Economic collapse couldn't do it. Will a government shutdown do it? I just don't know.

Senate deal appears near to avoid 'nuclear' showdown

By Michael O'Brien and Kasie Hunt, NBC News
A deal appears near to avert the "nuclear option" in the U.S. Senate and preserve the use of the filibuster in that chamber, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., suggested Tuesday morning.
Reid appeared on the Senate floor to announce that tensions had eased in the standoff between Democrats and Republicans over a series of President Barack Obama's nominees whose confirmation had been stalled for weeks in the Senate.
"We may have a way forward on this," Reid said in brief remarks. "I feel fairly confident, but as you know, that's why we need the time."
He added, without describing the nature of the agreement: "It is a compromise, and I think we get what we want, and they get what they want."

Wow. Didn't see that coming.

Hostess gets the Bain Capital treatment.

Private equity buys the "bankrupt" company for millions, restarts the brand after destroying the good paying union jobs of its employees and leaving the taxpayers holding the bag on their pensions. Get ready for lots of feel good stories after the "comeback" of the Twinkie with its part-time, minimum wage, no-benefits workforce! Eat up, America.
