Amid pressure from Canadian PM Trudeau-Fox News has apologized for erroneous Quebec terror tweet

https://twitter.com/ddale8/status/826644973177167872

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office called on Fox News to "either retract or update" the "false and misleading" tweet, noting that the suspect had been identified as a French Canadian, not someone of Moroccan origin.

Alexandre Bissonnette, 27, faces six counts of first-degree murder and five attempted murder charges in Sunday's shooting, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Quebec.

Authorities have not released a possible motive, but Trudeau denounced the attack as an act of terrorism.
"These tweets by Fox News dishonor the memory of the six victims and their families by spreading misinformation, playing identity politics, and perpetuating fear and division within our communities," Kate Purchase, the prime minister's director of communications, said in a statement.

"We need to remain focused on keeping our communities safe and united instead of trying to build walls and scapegoat communities," Purchase continued. "Muslims are predominantly the greatest victims of terrorist acts around the world. To paint terrorists with a broad brush that extends to all Muslims is not just ignorant -- it is irresponsible."

"If we allow individuals and organizations to succeed by scaring people, we do not actually end up any safer,"
she wrote. "Fear does not make us safer. It makes us weaker. Ramping up fear and closing our borders is not a solution. It distracts from the real issues that affect people's day to day life."

Donald Trump Jr. liked tweet hoping Quebec shooter was a Muslim because it would help his dad

Donald Trump Jr. liked a post on Twitter extolling the “tremendous spike in political capital” his father, President Donald Trump, will receive once “it’s revealed that the Quebec Shooting terrorists are Muslims.

The original tweet was posted Monday by John Cardillo, a former NYPD officer and syndicated radio host, who incorrectly posited that the attacker was a Muslim. In fact, 27-year-old Alexandre Bissonnette, the lone suspect in the attack that left six people dead and eight wounded Sunday night, is an anti-Muslim, far-right Trump supporter.

Carrillo’s tweet links the Sunday night Mosque massacre to Trump’s executive order restricting immigration from several predominantly Muslim countries. The Trump administration has continuously insisted the order is not a “ban” and does not target one religion, despite the president’s own use of the word “ban.”

Though the Trump administration sought to alleviate fears of conflicts of interest pertaining to the president’s “global business empire” by passing control of the Trump Organization to his sons, questions remain over whether the role the president’s children will play in the White House. According to CNN, Trump’s sons were actively involved in vetting candidates for their father’s cabinet, and were present Tuesday evening with Trump announced his Supreme Court nominee.

Los Angeles Times national reporter Matt Pearce first noticed the like on Tuesday evening. As of this time, Don Jr. has yet to unlike the inaccurate tweet championing the political expediency of a terror attack.

Man Says Mom Died After Being Denied Entry Into US Over Trumps Travel Ban

?no-auto

A Michigan man said his 75-year-old mother died in Iraq while waiting to come back to the US for better medical treatment after she was denied entry into the country because of President Donald Trump’s travel ban.

Mike Hager said he recently went to his birth country of Iraq along with his mother, Naimma, to visit family members when she fell ill. Hager said that he was waiting in line on Friday at the airport in Iraq with his niece, two nephews, and his mother, when he was told that he could go ahead, but that the rest of his family could not come — despite holding green cards.

He said his mother died the following day.

Hager said he believed his mother would still be alive if she was allowed back into the US, where she has lived since 1995.

“I was just shocked. I had to put my mom back on the wheelchair and take her back and call the ambulance and she was very very upset. She knew right there if we send her back to the hospital she’s going to pass away – she’s not going to make it,” Hager told the station.

Hager initially fled Iraq with his family during the Gulf War and lived in a refugee camp for four years before coming to the US. During the 2000s, he returned to Iraq to work alongside the US Marines and Army forces as a translator, Fox 2 Detroit reported. Hager now owns a business in Garden City, Michigan.
“We put our lives on the line. I got shot twice in Iraq in Fallujah. And I sacrificed give all my life to this country. Now I’m coming over here with my family not with me,” Hager said to CBS Boston.

Dove Pokes Fun at Trump With This #AlternativeFacts Ad That Lies About the Product

Last Sunday, Donald Trump’s senior adviser Kellyanne Conway coined the Orwellian term “alternative facts” to refer to press secretary Sean Spicer’s false claims about attendance at the president’s inauguration (among other things).

This weekend, one brand responded quickly.

Dove placed a two-page print ad, created by Ogilvy London, in various U.K. newspapers listing several #AlternativeFacts about its new antiperspirant. Included in the list are claims that the product will boost your IQ by 40 points, was first used by Cleopatra and “can help you remember distant relatives’ names at family gatherings.”

According to the ad, the product also “is a really good listener,” knows a dude who can get you on the guest list and “can plan your next holiday at a competitive rate.” It can even improve your wi-fi signal! (If only that were true.)
