Congress Will Honor Dick Cheney With A Statue In The U.S. Capitol
As Vice President, Cheney served as president of the Senate.

WASHINGTON -- Starting in December, the likeness of former Vice President Dick Cheney will grace the U.S. Capitol, in accordance with a Senate tradition honoring former vice presidents.

The Huffington Post was tipped off by a Senate resolution "authorizing the use of Emancipation Hall in the Capitol Visitor Center for the unveiling of the marble bust of Vice President Richard Cheney on December 3, 2015."

Robert Reich chats with former Repub Congressman: "So What Do You REALLY Think of these candidates"

Robert Reich
8 hrs · Edited ·

The other night I phoned a former Republican member of Congress with whom I'd worked in the 1990s on various pieces of legislation. I consider him a friend. I wanted his take on the Republican candidates because I felt I needed a reality check. Was I becoming excessively crotchety and partisan, or are these people really as weird as they seem? We got right into it:

Me: "So what do really you think of these candidates?"
Him: "You want my unvarnished opinion?'
Me: "Please. That's why I called."
Him: "They're all nuts."
Me: "Seriously. What do you really think of them?"
Him: "I just told you. They're bonkers. Bizarre. They're like a Star Wars bar room."
Me: "How did it happen? How did your party manage to come up with this collection?"
Him: "We didn't. They came up with themselves. There's no party any more. It's chaos. Anybody can just decide they want to be the Republican nominee, and make a run for it. Carson? Trump? They're in the lead, and they're both out of their f*cking minds."
Me: "That's not reassuring."
Him: "It's a disaster. I'm telling you, if either of them is elected, this country is going to hell. The rest of them aren't much better. I mean, Carly Fiorina? Really? Rubio? Please. Ted Cruz? Oh my god. And the people we thought had it sewn up, who are halfway sane -- Bush and Christie -- they're sounding almost as batty as the rest."
Me: "Who's to blame for this mess?"
Him: "Roger Ailes, David and Charles Koch, Rupert Murdoch, Rush Limbaugh. I could go on. They've poisoned the American mind and destroyed the Republican Party.
Me: "Nice talking with you."
Him: "Sleep well."

Warren: Trim corporate pay tax breaks to cover extra Social Security checks

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) wants to give all Social Security recipients a $580 check — and pay for it by trimming tax perks for corporate salaries.

Arguing that corporate executives are enjoying massive paychecks and bloated retirement accounts, Warren unveiled a new bill Thursday that she argued would even the playing field somewhat.

Noting that CEO compensation for the nation’s 350 biggest companies rose 3.9 percent in 2014, Warren proposed giving Americans that rely on Social Security, veterans benefits, or equivalent programs a one-time $580 payment, which is equal to 3.9 percent of the benefits they would otherwise receive.

Warren’s bill comes a few weeks after the Obama administration announced there would be no cost-of-living increase to Social Security payments in 2016. The rationale behind halting the increase for the first time since 2011 is that low inflation has kept consumer prices relatively flat.

Sanders trouncing Trump, media ignores

Brent Budowsky: Sanders trouncing Trump, media ignores

When America’s premier journal of capitalism releases a poll showing the democratic socialist candidate defeating by a landslide margin the capitalist who dominates television news, methinks it is liberals, not conservatives, who have the better argument against bias!

........

In an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Tuesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) leads Donald Trump in a presidential match-up by 9 points, 50 percent to 41 percent. In another recent poll, from CNN/ORC, Sanders also leads the GOP front-runner by 9, 53 percent to 44 percent. In a third poll, from Quinnipiac, Sanders leads Trump by 2 points, 46 percent to 44 percent. And in the summary polling from RealClearPolitics, as of Wednesday morning, he leads Trump by 3.2 points, 46.6 percent to 43.4 percent.

If NBC or Telemundo is granted permission by Republicans to host a GOP debate — or perhaps during a Trump performance hosting “Saturday Night Live” for 90 minutes, which would be an unseemly gift granted to a presidential candidate by a television network — Trump might be asked this fair question by a panelist who would soon be attacked for liberal bias:

What would it suggest about American politics, and how should Republicans react, if future polls track the NBC/Wall Street Journal and CNN/ORC polls and Bernie Sanders — or Hillary Clinton — appears poised to defeat the GOP nominee by 9 points in an epic landslide that could well bring Democrats back to power in Congress?

Would Trump, who constantly cites his strength in polling and who has called on competitor Jeb Bush to drop out of the race, drop out himself to prevent every branch of government from being controlled by Democrats, led by the democratic socialist Sanders or Clinton, the latest GOP Public Enemy No. 1?

Dems Re-Name House Committee Probing Planned Parenthood: "Select Committee to Attack Women's Health"

Democrats Coin A More Accurate Name For House Committee Probing Planned Parenthood
Six Dems will serve on what they call the Select Committee to Attack Women's Health.

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans have convened a Select Investigative Panel to investigate "the grisly practices of big abortion providers." But Democrats, who considered boycotting the committee because they think it will target Planned Parenthood exclusively, on Wednesday unveiled their preferred name: the Select Committee to Attack Women's Health.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in a statement, also named Democrats to sit on the committee.

“I am proud to name six strong champions of women, families and facts to stand up against the latest Republican assault on women’s health,” Pelosi said. “Hard-working families deserve better than a taxpayer-funded Republican Select Committee fixated on dismantling women’s health. As Republicans try to take affordable family planning and lifesaving preventive care away from millions of American women, Democrats will be in the room to fight for the truth.”

The Democrats on the committee are Reps. Jan Schakowsky (Ill.), who will be the ranking member; Jerrold Nadler (N.Y.); Diana DeGette (Colo.); Jackie Speier (Calif.); Suzan DelBene (Wash.); and Bonnie Watson Coleman (N.J.). Statements from the members used Pelosi's name for the committee, rather than the GOP's designated title.

Eight Republicans have been named to the panel.

Wow: George H.W. Bush says Cheney and Rumsfeld "damaged the reputation" of America:

"Very hard-line... just iron-ass."

.................

In "Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey Of George Herbert Walker Bush," author Jon Meacham quotes Bush as saying that Cheney and Rumsfeld were too hawkish and that their harsh stance damaged the reputation of the United States, the cable news network said.

Speaking of Cheney, who was vice president under President George W. Bush, the senior Bush said: "I don't know, he just became very hard-line and very different from the Dick Cheney I knew and worked with," according to the report.

........

"The reaction (to Sept. 11), what to do about the Middle East. Just iron-ass. His seeming knuckling under to the real hard-charging guys who want to fight about everything, use force to get our way in the Middle East," Bush told Meacham in the book to be published next Tuesday.

..................

On Rumsfeld, secretary of defense for most of the two terms served by his son, Bush is even more critical. He is quoted as saying: "I don't like what he did, and I think it hurt the President," referring to his son.

"I've never been that close to him anyway. There's a lack of humility, a lack of seeing what the other guy thinks. He's more kick ass and take names, take numbers. I think he paid a price for that. Rumsfeld was an arrogant fellow," he was quoted as saying in the biography.
