Imagine the Times sends Maureen Dowd to Colombia. Would she decide to try out the coca leaves, not ask how many to chew and eat a bushel? If the Times sent her to Yemen, would she decide to chew some Khat leaves, and not feeling the desired effect, keep chewing for hours? Tens of millions of people in South America and Africa chew coca and khat leaves without overdosing or dying, just like tens of millions of people around the world use marijuana and marijuana-infused products and don’t hallucinate to the point they think they are dying. When you ingest a new substance, you are experimenting. Do a little homework and you’ll be fine. If you’re dumb enough to dive in blind, you have only yourself to blame.

A Mississippi tea party official with close ties to U.S. Senate candidate Chris McDaniel apparently ended up inside a locked and empty county courthouse late Tuesday night after primary election results had come in.

Hinds County Republican executive chairman Pete Perry told TPM that he received a phone call around 2:00 a.m. CT on Wednesday from Janis Lane, president of the Central Mississippi Tea Party, who said she was locked inside the Hinds County courthouse. That would be where the circuit clerk and election commission offices, and the primary election ballots, are located.

The incident seemed to mystify Perry, a supporter of Sen. Thad Cochran, whom McDaniel is challenging for the GOP nomination. The ballots had been secured prior to the intrusion, according to local authorities.

"I don't know. I know I wouldn't walk into a courthouse at 2 o'clock in the morning by myself or with somebody else and just walk around inside the building," Perry said. "I'm not going to go into a public building just because somehow or another I happened to find a door that was unlocked.

Sandra Fluke, who won 19.7 percent of the votes, chose to celebrate Election Night in a private manner: in her office with her closest volunteers and advisers.

Fluke, a public interest advocate, was thrust into the spotlight in 2012 when she spoke at a House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee meeting about the importance of contraception being covered by health insurance, even at Catholic institutions like Georgetown Law, where she was a student. Rush Limbaugh attacked Fluke on his radio program, calling her “a slut” and “a prostitute” who expects the state to pay her to have sex.

Limbaugh later apologized for his remarks, but Fluke rejected his apology.

“The way I look at the Rush situation is that it’s not what qualifies me – that’s my 10 years of work in public interest – but it gives people an idea of how I react when I am in the spotlight,” she said. “I was put in a difficult spot of standing up and doing the right thing and that is how I will continue to react under pressure.”
Fluke is deeply concerned with women’s issues like reproductive rights and the pay gap, but she views her platform as pro-family rather than just pro-woman.

“The evidence will show up when they need more evidence,” deGrasse Tyson told Hayes. “More storms, more coastlines getting lost. People beginning to lose their wealth. People, if they begin to lose their wealth, they change their mind real fast, I’ve found — particularly in a capitalist culture.”

Gun lovers in Texas are furious at the National Rifle Association right now.

In response to the NRA's statement on Friday criticizing Texas activists' recent tactics, members of the pro-gun group Open Carry Texas have been cutting up their NRA membership cards, and the group has issued a statement demanding a retraction of the NRA's "disgusting and disrespectful comments." Or else.

"The more the NRA continues to divide its members by attacking some aspects of gun rights instead of supporting all gun rights, the more support it will lose," Open Carry Texas said in a statement published Monday on its Facebook page.

In its statement last week, the NRA said that activists in Texas had recently "crossed the line from enthusiasm to downright foolishness" with their attempts to bring semi-automatic rifles into fast food restaurants. Open Carry Texas -- the most prominent group involved in the Texas demonstrations -- responded Monday by saying it was "unfortunate that an organization that claims to be dedicated to the preservation of gun rights would attack another organization fighting so hard for those rights in Texas."

"Already, OCT members are posting pictures of themselves cutting up their life membership cards," the group said. "If they do not retract their disgusting and disrespectful comments, OCT will have no choice but to withdraw its full support of the NRA and establish relationships with other gun rights organizations that fight for ALL gun rights, instead of just paying them lip service the way the NRA appears to be doing."
