Bigotry: A Huge Win For The GOP

Bryan Fischer, issue director at the American Family Association, a conservative group opposed to same-sex marriage, bragged about his role in the episode. “It’s very clear from the Washington Post that he resigned because of pressure that was put on the Romney campaign by the pro-family community,” he said on his radio show, Focal Point. “So ladies and gentlemen, this is a huge win, and it’s a huge win for us in regard to Mitt Romney, because Mitt Romney has been forced to say, ‘Look, I overstepped my bounds here, I went outside my parameters here, I went off the reservation with this hire, the pro-family community has called me back to the table here, called me back inside the borders of the reservation.’”

You Can Be Fired for a Facebook “Like”

If you want to keep your job, don’t “like” someone on Facebook who is an opponent of your boss. In a decision that affects free expression on social media, a federal judge ruled that there’s no First Amendment protection for a one-click Facebook like.

“It is the Court’s conclusion that merely “liking” a Facebook page is insufficient speech to merit constitutional protection,” wrote federal trial judge Raymond A. Jackson of Norfolk, VA.

The candidate in question — B.J. Roberts, Sheriff of Hampton, Virginia — cited a budget squeeze when he fired Bobby Bland and four cohorts, who took to the court crying free speech foul over Facebook. The ex-employees of Roberts’ election campaign said the sheriff knew they “liked” his opponent’s Facebook page, prompting Roberts to let them go once he won.

Bland and friends also attended Roberts’ opponents cookout, but the court decided that Roberts didn’t know about that or the bumper sticker – which would be protected under the First Amendment.

Anti-Tank Grenades Found At Ariz. Neo-Nazi Massacre Site

Six anti-tank grenades designed to be fired from a launcher were discovered on Wednesday at the scene of a horrific Arizona mass murder-suicide, which authorities said was carried out by well known white supremacist JT Ready.

The discovery helped expand the probe of the killings to the federal level and has led investigators with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to begin looking into how Ready was able to obtain the illegal explosives, according to ATF special agent Tom Mangan.

Mangan described the bombs as 40mm armor-piercing projectile grenades, the same type used by the U.S. military in combat. The grenades are generally fired from some sort of launcher, but Mangan said no such weapon was found at the scene.

Ready was a longtime neo-Nazi and border vigilante who authorities said walked into a house in a suburb east of Phoenix on Wednesday and killed four people, including his girlfriend and a 15-month-old baby, before turning the gun on himself.

Pelosi condemns Obama’s continued raids on marijuana dispensaries

Source: Raw Story

President Barack Obama’s emphasis on raiding medical marijuana dispensaries drew a rebuke from none other than House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) this week, who warned in a prepared statement that she has “strong concerns” about her political ally’s policy.

Since President Barack Obama took office, “more than 200" state-approved medical marijuana facilities have been raided, according to Kris Hermes, spokesperson for Americans for Safe Access (ASA), who spoke to Raw Story on Thursday.

“I have strong concerns about the recent actions by the federal government that threaten the safe access of medicinal marijuana to alleviate the suffering of patients in California, and undermine a policy that has been in place under which the federal government did not pursue individuals whose actions complied with state laws providing for medicinal marijuana,” she said.

“Proven medicinal uses of marijuana include improving the quality of life for patients with cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and other severe medical conditions,” she added. “I am pleased to join organizations that support legal access to medicinal marijuana, including the American Nurses Association, the Lymphoma Foundation of America, and the AIDS Action Council. Medicinal marijuana alleviates some of the most debilitating symptoms of AIDS, including pain, wasting, and nausea. The opportunity to ease the suffering of people who are seriously ill or enduring difficult and painful therapies is an opportunity we must not ignore.

Colin Powell Says Iraq ‘Blot’ Teaches Need for Skepticism

Colin Powell Says Iraq ‘Blot’ Teaches Need for Skepticism

Colin Powell says his erroneous address to the United Nations about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction provides a lesson to business leaders on the importance of staying skeptical and following their intuition.

“Yes, a blot, a failure will always be attached to me and my UN presentation,” the former U.S. secretary of state writes in a new book of leadership parables that draws frequently on his Iraq war experience. “I am mad mostly at myself for not having smelled the problem. My instincts failed me.”

Powell, 75, laments that no intelligence officials had the “courage” to warn that he was given false information that Iraq had such weapons during preparations for his February 2003 speech before the U.S. invasion the following month. Regrets are sprinkled through “It Worked For Me,” along with lessons gleaned from a career that carried him from foxholes in Vietnam to senior positions at the Pentagon and the State Department.

In uncorrected page proofs of the book scheduled to be published May 22 and written with Tony Koltz, Powell advises on the virtues of kindness for a leader and a balanced life that shuns an obsession with work. He recommends taking care of and getting to know the “troops,” citing State Department garage attendants he paid a surprise visit and impromptu chats with employees.

Bush Adviser Hits Romney Camp For Ousting Gay Spokesman

Bush Adviser Hits Romney Camp For Ousting Gay Spokesman
By Alex Seitz-Wald on May 3, 2012 at 3:20 pm

Former Bush political adviser Mark McKinnon criticized the Romney campaign for its handling of former foreign policy spokesman Ric Grenell, who resigned from the campaign just weeks after being hired. Romney had been under fire from anti-gay activists on the far right for taking on Grenell, who is openly gay, and instead of standing up the haters, the campaign muzzled the Grenell, then grudgingly accepted his resignation in order to avoid a confrontation.

McKinnon, who also served on Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) 2008 presidential run and went on to found the group No Lables, told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell today that Grenell’s departure is “very unfortunate” and said Romney should have stood by his aide, because Americans want a president who has “clear convictions and stands behind his decisions”:

MCKINNON: It’s disappointing, it’s frustrating for a lot of us Republicans who would like to see more people like Grenell in positions of authority. … Clearly, he was being muzzled for some reason…and that seems to a response to pressure from the right.

These are examples where people like me would like to see Mitt Romney stand up and say, I don’t care what people think, this is my guy, I’m standing behind him, and I want him out front. We need to see more examples of that, because what people ultimately want in a president is somebody who’s strong, somebody who’s bold, somebody who has clear convictions and stands behind his decisions.

Friends Of Nazi Behind Arizona Massacre Try To Blame Murders On Mexicans

Neo-Nazi J.T. Ready killed four people in Arizona yesterday before turning the gun on himself. His racist pals tried blaming the shooting on a "cartel assassination squad."

At this point, it's fairly clear Ready was the shooter -- our former colleagues in Arizona have confirmed with police that they suspect it to be a case of quadruple-murder/suicide. However, Ready's racist hillbilly buddies are attempting to blame the murders on Mexicans (natch) -- despite there being nothing to suggest anyone but Ready was the shooter.

We met Ready several times during our five years in the desert while working for the Voice's sister paper the Phoenix New Times -- he's one of the more charming National Socialists we've had the displeasure of meeting. Subsequently, we "liked" his Facebook page to keep up with what he and his Nazi buddies were up to. Below is what's currently posted on Ready's page:

Reports are unconfirmed that a cartel assassination squad murdered JT Ready and several of his friends and family this afternoon in Gilbert Arizona. This page's admin will keep you updated of the situation as soon as possible.

Law enforcement officials never publicly suspected a cartel hit squad had anything to do with the murders -- and there has been no update.

Sorry, Mitt, but Saturday Night Live just can't find a way to make time for you

Mitt Romney will not be appearing on Saturday Night Live this season, Lorne Michaels said today. “We only have three shows left and they’re pretty jammed-packed,” the executive producer said during a conference call. “It might be in the fall, but we’ll never know, that’ll all depend on his availability.” SNL’s 37th season wraps up May 19. It will return in September in the heat of the presidential election campaign. In early April, Michaels extended an invitation to the former Massachusetts Governor to appear on the show, and Romney expressed interest in taking SNL up on the invite. “Of course,” Romney said, “it would depend on the nature of the skit. I want it to be funny.” Today Michaels confirmed he had some “communication” with the Romney campaign about the presumptive GOP nominee coming on, but then “the primaries overtook everything.”
