Corrupt Michigan officials hid lead levels by 'gaming' the sampling process to falsify results

A 2008 email from a Michigan water quality official asked a technician in Fenton, Michigan, near Flint, to falsify the results of a high lead sampling by testing more homes.

The Guardian reviewed the email and reported on it Wednesday. Adam Rosenthal of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) sent the email to the technician and copied Mike Prysby, the engineer in MDEQ's Office of Drinking Water and Municipal Assistance who was just indicted on criminal charges for his role in the Flint water crisis.

Samples collected from five of the nearly 45 homes in the Chateaux Du Lac Condominiums, in the small town of Fenton, which runs its own private water system, were sent to the MDEQ and showed high levels of lead. One of the homes tested at 115 parts per billion (ppb)—almost ten times higher than the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "action level" of 15 ppb. Rosenthal wrote in his September 16, 2008 email, "I just saw the results—115 ppb for lead is a bit high. Since this is an annual round of monitoring, which ends 9/30/08, there is still time to collect more samples and possibly bump this one out."

Dr. Marc Edwards, the Virginia Tech University engineering professor who exposed the high lead levels in Flint when he conducted his own sampling, told the Guardian, "Oh my gosh, I've never heard it more black and white. In the Flint emails, if you recall, it was a little bit implied ... this is like telling the strategy, which is: 'You failed, but if you go out and get a whole bunch more samples that are low, then you can game it lower.'

"It just shows that this culture of corruption and unethical, uncaring behavior predated Flint by at least six years."

George Takei Asks For Kindness And Civility

I'm George Takei. As many of you probably know, I'm a Democrat. And as you may have seen, I've also been a fan of Bernie Sanders. Much of what he stood for and helped bring to the forefront in this primary are things I too have fought for. I stood with the protesters at Occupy Wall Street and have spoken out often for campaign finance reform. I crowd-funded to defeat entrenched corporate interests in Congress. So I like Bernie. A lot of folks like Bernie. Even God, Himself, sent Bernie a tweet. But having been through many bruising primaries in my life, I'm also a realist. From where I sit, the math is clear. Hillary will likely win, and she will be our nominee. But that doesn't mean Bernie didn't also win. He won in a myriad of ways, none more so than energizing the Democratic base in a way no one expected. Young people in particular have become so passionate about this election. Because they recognize the historic importance at stake is nothing less than the very soul of our nation. So I'm asking Democrats out there to take a pledge, along with me.

#Vote Blue No Matter Who

While this primary, at times, has felt damaging, with many a harsh word leveled by both sides — ultimately, we Democrats know that a bit of a tussle isn't a bad thing. It makes us stronger, keeps us sharp. And really, it's like a family squabble. For only family, those very close to us, can truly get under our skin, but remember this too: it's precisely because we respect and like each other that the words and criticism sting as much as they do.

But here's the other thing about family — we come together when threatened and come together we will in November. In case you need a bit more convincing, there are many fundamental things both Bernie and Hillary agree on and would both work towards once in the White House.

Expand medicare and the Affordable Care Act
Raise the minimum wage
Protect a woman's right to choose
Fund Planned Parenthood
Make college much more affordable
Keep the church and state separate
Protect Social Security
Fight for LGBT rights and equality
Lead the world in combating climate change
Pass immigration reform with a path to citizenship
Raise taxes on the top earners

And importantly, both would appoint justices to the Supreme Court who share compassionate progressive values to stop the Conservatives from undoing decades of gains. Bernie himself has said, “On her worst day Hillary Clinton will be an infinitely better candidate and president than the Republican candidate on his best day.” If he believes that, his supporters can too. If your state has yet to vote, please do make your voice heard for the candidate you prefer. But remember, come November, Vote Blue No Matter Who.

New Carly Fiorina Website Gets Pushed Directly To Something She’s REALLY Gonna Hate

As if Ted Cruz wasn’t already horrible enough on his own, he decided to double-down on people not liking him by adding a woman who is against a woman’s right to choose. Not only that, she lied about Planned Parenthood, was the CEO to a company that she promptly flushed down the toilet, including outsourcing jobs, and has absolutely no public policy experience whatsoever.

Speaking of Planned Parenthood, some clever person just took the website
and pushed it to go directly to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund donation page:

Not only quick thinking on the part of whoever put this together, but absolutely, breathtakingly brilliant.

Just to remind you, Carly Fiorina loved to lie time after time about Planned Parenthood, and fed directly into the “baby body parts” myth that circulated unsubstantiated for several months.

The fact that now her new mythical potential to be vice president now leads people directly to donating for Planned Parenthood isn’t only amazing retribution, but pure magic.

Well done, internet. Well done indeed. This is what some may call — karma.

'Religious freedom' measure defeated in Missouri House committee

Source: St Louis Post Dispatcj

JEFFERSON CITY • Missourians likely will not vote on the controversial Senate Joint Resolution 39 after the House Emerging Issues Committee voted down the measure on a tie vote Wednesday.

Republican Reps. Anne Zerr of St. Charles, Caleb Rowden of Columbia and Jim Hansen of Frankford joined with the committee's three Democrats. With a tie 6-6 vote, the measure's tumultuous journey through the Missouri Legislature is probably over.

The resolution, if approved by voters, would have granted greater legal protections under the Missouri constitution to clergy and wedding vendors who decline to participate in a same-sex wedding.

Any course forward for the SJR is hard to see with a little more than two weeks remaining in the legislative session. Sen. Bob Onder, R-Lake Saint Louis, who sponsored the proposal, issued a statement indicating the measure was dead.

A Former Secretary Of State Just Eviscerated Trump’s Incoherent Foreign Policy Speech

Former Sec. of State Madeleine Albright tore apart Donald Trump’s foreign policy speech to reveal the incoherent ramblings of a dangerous man who hides his lies and inconsistencies behind simple slogans.

In a conference call with reporters, former Sec. of State Madeline Albright said:

I’ve gotten to listen to a lot of foreign policy speeches over the years, and in fact have given a few myself, and I was hoping to hear something that made sense. But I’ve got to tell you; I’ve never seen such a combination of simplistic slogans, contradictions, and misstatements in one speech. What Donald Trump’s goal today may have been was to convince us that he can be presidential, but instead of doing that he just underscored the fact that he is running the most reckless and dangerous presidential campaign in modern history.

I found many things troubling, but three that I think are worth pointing out. First, as his advisors pointed out, there were no details in the speech, and instead, we heard a lot tough talk and simplistic slogans and empty promises. Second, it was incoherent and riddled with contradictions. I can’t list every example, but there were a few which stand out. He talked about regaining the trust of our allies while in effect promising to blackmail them in terms of supporting us. If you don’t help us, we don’t help you kind of talk. He then talked about the importance of Western values but questioned why we would think about supporting democracy in other countries. Then, I think the one that really made the least sense of all. He said he would work with Muslims to fight terrorism, but he has already alienated them with proposals to block them from coming into the country.

What I think was most troubling in this speech was the flat out dangerous ideas that he continues to embrace. His foreign policy slogan of America first is so clearly, maybe he’s never read history, or he doesn’t understand it. But he clearly didn’t understand what the America Firsters used to talk about was that there wasn’t any Nazi threat to American interests. If he keeps talking about American interests, but still recalling America Firsters, that is a mega contradiction.

His main message was that we need to be more unpredictable as a nation. Now, in fact, unpredictability is the only thing that you can count on if Donald Trump is our Commander in Chief. But do you actually want somebody unpredictable with the nuclear codes?

“The defendant is a serial child molester”

let this sink in:

“The defendant is a serial child molester,” said Judge Thomas M. Durkin, of Federal District Court, in a tough rebuke of the former speaker before issuing his sentence. He added, “Nothing is more stunning than having ‘serial child molester’ and ‘Speaker of the House’ in the same sentence.”

Pointing out the vulnerability of Mr. Hastert’s young victims, he said they were damaged for years.

“If there’s a public shaming of the defendant because of the conduct he’s engaged in, so be it,” Judge Durkin said.
