Former wife: NRA official banned from carrying gun after ‘years of domestic violence’

New York National Rifle Association official barred from carrying a gun

An order of protection stemming from a domestic disturbance at his Long Island home in 2010 prevents Richard D’Alauro, the NRA’s field representative for the city and its suburbs, from carrying the weapons. 'Years of domestic violence' make his former wife fear his ability to acquire guns again in the future.

The former wife of a top official with the National Rifle Association in New York says that “years of domestic violence” caused a judge to bar the NRA field representative from carrying a gun.

The New York Daily News on Wednesday reported that police has confiscated an arsenal of 39 firearms from the home of Richard D’Alauro in 2010 because of a confrontation with his then-wife at their Long Island home.

Suffolk County records showed that authorities filed misdemeanor charges against Richard D’Alauro for assault and endangering a child after the incident on Sept. 1, 2010. At the time, police confiscated 39 weapons from the NRA official’s home, including at least 16 handguns.

Richard D’Alauro later pleaded guilty to a non-misdemeanor harassment charge after admitting that tried to “harass, annoy or alarm” his wife with “physical contact.” Due to a protection order, D’Alauro cannot purchase or own a firearm until Oct. 3, 2013.

Will no meteor rid us of these meddlesome Villagers?

The day after Secretary of State Colin Powell’s speech before the U.N. Security Council Wednesday, TV commentators and newspaper editorials, and even many liberal pundits, declared their support for the Bush administration’s hard-line stance on Iraq. CNN’s Bill Schneider said that “no one” disputed Powell’s findings. Bob Woodward, asked by Larry King on CNN what happens if we go to war and don’t find any WMD, answered: “I think the chance of that happening is about zero. There’s just too much there.”

The Good, Racist People - By TA-NEHISI COATES

The Good, Racist People

In modern America we believe racism to be the property of the uniquely villainous and morally deformed, the ideology of trolls, gorgons and orcs. We believe this even when we are actually being racist. In 1957, neighbors in Levittown, Pa., uniting under the flag of segregation, wrote:

“As moral, religious and law-abiding citizens, we feel that we are unprejudiced and undiscriminating in our wish to keep our community a closed community.”

I am trying to imagine a white president forced to show his papers at a national news conference, and coming up blank. I am trying to a imagine a prominent white Harvard professor arrested for breaking into his own home, and coming up with nothing. I am trying to see Sean Penn or Nicolas Cage being frisked at an upscale deli, and I find myself laughing in the dark. It is worth considering the messaging here. It says to black kids: “Don’t leave home. They don’t want you around.” It is messaging propagated by moral people.

Rand Paul is Cordially Invited to Kiss My Ass

Rand Paul has been droning on about drones for 7 hours. In that time, he could have introduced a damn bill that would repeal the AUMF, which is the reason motherfuckers are freaking out that the Black Dude in the White House is going to drone strike them in the Whole Foods parking Lot.

Rand Paul won’t take the time to introduce a bill to repeal the AUMF (because that would require him to put his money where his pie hole is), but he WILL take the time to try to attach a Personhood Amendment to a fucking flood insurance bill. That’s right. A personhood amendment. To a fucking flood insurance bill.

MORE Angry Black Lady:

.............None of these guys ever had a real objection that I ever heard to the drone program until it became the latest cudgel to use on That Person in the White House. (By comparison, Debbie Stabenow and Bernie Sanders have been dubious about it for months now, but they're Democrats and, therefore, do not count.) As Adam Serwer pointed out, four of Paul's newest fans voted in favor of indefinite detention. I hope Aqua Buddha's ready for what's going to happen the next time there's a Republican president. It's going to be awfully lonely being him.

FALLOWS: My capsule view of Bush

My capsule view of Bush: I believe that the temperamental combination he brought to the presidency was lethal. I think of the big three elements of this mix as ignorance, incuriosity, and decisiveness.

•Ignorance was his low level of pre-existing knowledge of the complexities of the world.

•”Incuriosity” was his apparent lack of passion about learning what he didn’t know.

•Decisiveness was his desire, nonetheless, to make big, sweeping choices quickly — for instance, ten years ago that it made sense to invade Iraq.

DON'T WORRY: Keystone XL Pipeline Would Be Safe From The Climate Impacts It Would Help Cause

Don’t Worry: Keystone XL Pipeline Would Be Safe From The Climate Impacts It Would Cause
By Brad Johnson, Guest Blogger on Mar 6, 2013 at 10:45 am

According to John Kerry’s State Department, the controversial Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will be safe from the climate impacts to which it will contribute.

The department’s contractor-written Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement estimates, and then dismisses, the pipeline’s massive carbon footprint. But the statement also determines that the global warming the pipeline’s dirty crude will cause will not affect the pipeline itself because it “will be buried deep enough”:

During the operations period, climate change projections suggest the following changes:

Warmer winter temperatures;
A shorter cool season;
A longer duration of frost-free periods;
More freeze-thaw cycles per year (which could lead to an increased number of episodes of soil contraction and expansion);
Warmer summer temperatures;
Increased number of hot days and consecutive hot days; and
Longer summers (which could lead to impacts associated with heat stress and wildfire risks).

The pipeline would be buried deep enough to avoid surface impacts of climate changes (freeze-thaw cycles, fires, and temperature extremes).

Ships to sail directly over the north pole by 2050, scientists say

Ships to sail directly over the north pole by 2050, scientists say
John Vidal, The Guardian
Monday 4 March 2013 15.00 EST

By 2050, say Laurence C. Smith and Scott R. Stephenson at the University of California in the journal PNAS on Monday, ordinary vessels should be able to travel easily along the northern sea route, and moderately ice-strengthened ships should be able to take the shortest possible route between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, passing over the pole itself. The easiest time would be in September, when annual sea ice cover in the Arctic Ocean is at its lowest extent.

"The prospect of common open water ships, which comprise the vast majority of the global fleet, entering the Arctic Ocean in late summer, and even its remote central basin by moderately ice-strengthened vessels heightens the urgency for a mandatory International Maritime Organisation regulatory framework to ensure adequate environmental protections, vessel safety standards, and search-and-rescue capability," it adds.
