OMG, GOP Desperate To Float New Candidate-Suggest Clarence Thomas!?!?!?

Clarence Thomas Is a Long Shot for President, But His Candidacy Makes a Lot of Sense
by Adam Winkler Feb 26, 2012 4:45 AM EST
Call it a longshot if you like, but in this anything-can-happen political year, the Supreme Court justice has qualities to recommend him to a broad spectrum of voters.

With the Republican presidential nomination still up in the air, the possibility of a brokered convention is looking increasingly likely. Under the party’s rules, the delegates won by Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and the others in the primaries and caucuses are obligated to vote for their assigned candidate only on the first ballot. If no candidate wins the required number of votes, the delegates can throw their support to anyone. There’s speculation that party insiders, unhappy with the current field, might float the candidacy of someone not now in the race, like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie or Jeb Bush.

While Christie and Bush might be fine candidates, perhaps the Republicans should consider a more inspired and game-changing pick: Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Far-fetched? Maybe. But a Thomas candidacy would energize Republicans in a way that few other Republicans can and would steal tremendous media attention from President Barack Obama.

Study: Medical Marijuana Legalization leads to decrease in suicide rates

Study: Medical Pot Legalization Correlated With Fewer Suicides

They concluded: “Policymakers weighing the pros and cons of legalization should consider the possibility that medical marijuana laws may lead to fewer suicides among young adult males.”

From Alternet:

Researchers at Montana State University, the University of Colorado, and San Diego State University assessed rates of suicide in the years before and after the passage of statewide medical marijuana laws.

Authors found, “The total suicide rate falls smoothly during the pre-legalization period in both MML (medical marijuana law) and non-MML states. However, beginning in year zero, the trends diverge: the suicide rate in MML states continues to fall, while the suicide rate in states that never legalized medical marijuana begins to climb gradually.

Authors theorized that the limited legalization of cannabis may “lead to an improvement in the psychological well-being of young adult males, an improvement that is reflected in fewer suicides.” They further speculated, “The strong association between alcohol consumption and suicide-related outcomes found by previous researchers raises the possibility that medical marijuana laws reduce the risk of suicide by decreasing alcohol consumption.”

They concluded: “Policymakers weighing the pros and cons of legalization should consider the possibility that medical marijuana laws may lead to fewer suicides among young adult males.”

ROMNEY:"...Vote For The Other Guy"

Romney: ‘Vote for the other guy’ if you can’t relate to me

The former Bain Capital CEO on Friday noted that his wife drove two Cadillacs. It was just one of a number of gaffes that may make it hard for average Americans to relate to the candidate, who has a net worth of about $250 million.

Fox News host Chris Wallace on Sunday ask Romney if he understood if he understood why “some voters would be put off by those things.”

“You know, I can’t be perfect,” Romney replied. “I just am who I am. And I can tell you this, which is with regards to the cars we have, that’s something that was talked about last September. People asked us what vehicles we own, and we have a car that we have in California. We have a car that we have back in Boston where our other home is.”

“So, that’s just the way it is,” he added. “If people think there is something wrong with being successful in America then they better vote for the other guy because I’ve been extraordinarily successful. And I want to use that success and that know-how to help the American people.”

‘The Country Deserves Better’: Maine Gov Unloads On GOP Field

In remarks captured by the Portland Press Herald, Maine Republican Gov. Paul LePage unloaded on the GOP 2012 field Saturday, decrying all the candidates as damaged goods after having battered each other. He said the country “deserves better” than the current crop and called for a brokered convention to pick a dark horse candidate to challenge President Obama.

“The candidates in this primary have beat themselves up so badly it would be nice to have a fresh face that we all could say, ‘Okay.’ The country deserves better than having people stand up and keep criticizing each other,” said LePage, according to the Press Herald.

He told reporters at the National Governors Association meeting that the remaining candidates have all “injured themselves and injured the party” to the point where he’d “love to see a good old-fashioned convention and a dark horse” emerge from it. LePage’s spokesperson later told the Press Herald that the governor would support the eventual nominee for president.

The remarks come as party insiders fret that a GOP primary battle between Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum may not end any time soon.

Gibbs zings Gingrich

Gibbs zings Gingrich

Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs on Sunday zinged Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich for criticizing the administration's actions in Afghanistan.

Gibbs, who's now advising President's Barack Obama's campaign, said on CNN's “State of the Union” Sunday that the Obama administration is trying to defuse current tensions in the country and that Gingrich is not someone many people would look to for leadership on foreign policy issues.

“If there’s a problem on a lunar colony, he’ll be among the first we call,” Gibbs said.

Romney's Daytona 500: A speedway full of foreign cars

Today, the Daytona 500 will host its 54th race. These days, it's hard to imagine a NASCAR race without American cars. Four years ago, it seemed entirely possible. But President Obama made the tough decision to extend loans to Detroit automakers when they were in crisis, and today, NASCAR fans will be treated to the best stock car racing in the world, made possible by Detroit.

If Mitt Romney had had his way and we had "let Detroit go bankrupt," today we'd be watching a Daytona Beach speedway full of foreign cars. Detroit would not be producing stock cars—or any cars at all.

We made a few photos to remind everyone what Romney's position on Detroit would have meant for American car racing. Pass them along.

Military pressures clinicians to issue unwarranted psychiatric diagnoses to get rid of troops

After a soldier complained that she had made sexually suggestive remarks, she was suspended from her counseling duties and sent to an Army psychiatrist for evaluation. His findings were shattering: She had, he said in a report, a personality disorder, a diagnosis that the military has used to discharge thousands of troops. She was sent home.

She disputed the diagnosis, but it was not until months later that she found what seemed powerful ammunition buried in her medical file, portions of which she provided to The New York Times. “Her command specifically asks for a diagnosis of a personality disorder,” a document signed by the psychiatrist said.

Veterans’ advocates say Captain Carlson stumbled upon evidence of something they had long suspected but had struggled to prove: that military commanders pressure clinicians to issue unwarranted psychiatric diagnoses to get rid of troops.

................ Though it is impossible to know how many veterans are disputing their personality disorder discharges, Vietnam Veterans of America, an advocacy group, with help from the Yale veterans legal clinic, has sued the Defense Department seeking records they say will show that thousands of troops have been unfairly discharged for personality or adjustment disorder since 2001.

Republicans, you vile, repulsive, scum. You're not leading this country. You're not contributing to this country. You're not even part of this country. You are the maggot-ridden rot that arises in this country's damaged flesh; you are the vultures constantly picking at us to see if we're weak enough yet to become your next meal; you create problems where none would otherwise exist, just to further weaken America and quicken your own insatiable appetites; you are garbage, and you are traitors. And you are not welcome in this country anymore.
