Tony Blair is sorry the intel they sexed up to justify the Iraq War wasn't better sexed up.

Iraqi civilian deaths, 2003-2010

No one suffered more from the Iraq War than Iraqi civilians. The fluctuations in this chart show the three distinct stages of the war. The first, from 2003 to 2005, was the war between the US-led invasion force and Iraqi forces, including government forces as well as Islamist and nationalist insurgents. Civilians in this period were bystanders. In early 2006, however, Iraq's conflict became what is often described as a civil war, fought among three factions: Sunni insurgents, including Islamist extremists and former Saddam loyalists; Shia militias, some of them rogue members of state security forces; and the US-led occupation force. In this period, which lasted two awful years, civilians were often the target of the violence, with bombings and death squads seeking to ethnically cleanse Baghdad in particular. While conditions improved significantly after 2008, many fear that the current crisis could reignite the sectarian hatreds and militias of 2006 to 2007.

The Bosnian Hardaga family helped shelter a family of Jews

A new exhibition aims to celebrate the role Muslims played in saving Jewish lives during the Holocaust.

The Righteous Muslim Exhibition is being launched at the Board of Deputies of British Jews in Bloomsbury, central London.

Photographs of 70 Muslims who sheltered Jews during World War II will be displayed alongside stories detailing their acts of heroism.

The exhibition hopes to inspire new research into instances of collaboration between the Muslim and Jewish communities.

Yad Vashem, Israel's official memorial to victims of the Holocaust, honours nearly 25,000 so-called "righteous persons" who risked their lives to protect the Jewish community during Nazi Germany's reign of terror.

Noam Chomsky blasts modern GOP as extremists whose only policy is ‘don’t do anything or bomb’

There are no GOP candidates that have even a “semblance of rationality” competing for the nomination, he said.

He said “distinguished, respected conservative commentators” have described the current GOP as a “radical insurgency which has abandoned parliamentary politics” whose only policies are “don’t do anything or bomb.”

Chomsky said during the neoliberal period — which scholars think of as starting with Margaret Thatcher in the United Kingdom and Ronald Reagan in the U.S. in which the private sector was strengthened via deregulation and privatization — both the Democrats and Republicans shifted to the right.

...............

Their solution has led to the spectacle today where the idea of a “moderate Republican” seems impossible, as the party’s base demands more and more intransigence and extreme positions on issues like LGBT rights and social welfare programs.

“They had to turn to other constituencies which are there but were never politically mobilized,” Chomsky said. “The Christian evangelicals, the nativists who are afraid ‘they’re taking our country away from us,’ people who are so terrified they have to carry a gun into a coffee shop. That’s their base, essentially.”

Hillary Clinton's secret to getting through an 11-hour hearing: meditation & yoga

"I tried to meditate in the breaks," Clinton was overheard telling lawmakers who were seated behind her during Thursday's hearings into the terrorist attacks on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Libya.

An NPR microphone picked up the comments after three hours of testimony and before she left the hearing room for a lunch break.

There hadn't been any prior breaks during the hearing, leading NPR to speculate that Clinton got a reprieve when Democratic committee members had the microphone. While Republicans peppered Clinton with questions, Democrats spent their time targeting the investigation, accusing the GOP of wasting time and taxpayer money.

Before the hearing, a Yahoo News reporter also asked Clinton if her yoga routine would help her get through the testimony.

"Yes. Yes. Yoga always helps," she replied.

Live sketches from the Benghazi hearing

By Ann Telnaes October 23

If you didn’t learn anything new during yesterday’s 11-hour House Select Committee on Benghazi hearing, you have to give Hillary Clinton one thing: she has stamina. I can’t imagine Donald Trump testifying that many hours without storming out of the room.
