A 'Beat Trump' Fervor Produces Big Crowds

A ‘Beat Trump’ Fervor Produces Big Crowds

March 9, 2019 at 7:17 am EST By Taegan Goddard

New York Times: “As the already large presidential field grows by the week, the enthusiasm that propelled Democrats to a decisive takeover of the House in the midterms is still surging, driving crowd sizes and intensity typically seen in the days before the first caucuses and primaries, not a year ahead of them. Powered by an almost desperate yearning to oust President Trump, and galvanized by the most diverse field in presidential primary history, Democrats are packing into gymnasiums, churches and exhibition halls to hear candidates speak — even if they are far from committed to supporting the candidate they are showing up to see.”

“The populist message many of the candidates have on offer is resonating: From Northern California to Council Bluffs to the Brooklyn streets where Mr. Sanders was raised, voters are delighting in the calls to spurn big donors, the policies to fight wealth inequality and the promises of relief from college debt and steep medical bills.”

Huge Victory for ACLU in Family Separation Lawsuit

Huge Victory for ACLU in Family Separation Lawsuit

The Washington Post is reporting this morning that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has won a huge lawsuit against the Trump administration in federal court.

U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw has ruled that potentially thousands of migrant families who were separated at the southern border under the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy may now be added to an existing class-action lawsuit.

Last year Sabraw ordered the administration to reunite over 2,800 migrant children who were separated from their families at the border. That order applied to those separated after June 26, 2018.

But Sabraw’s new court order holds that his decision applies to those detained much earlier — as early as July 1, 2017.

The surprising ruling from Sabraw came after he became aware of reports that families were separated long before the “zero tolerance” policy was officially announced in April of last year by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

In announcing his decision, Sabraw wrote:

“The hallmark of a civilized society is measured by how it treats its people and those within its borders. That Defendants may have to change course and undertake additional effort to address these issues does not render modification of the class definition unfair; it only serves to underscore the unquestionable importance of the effort and why it is necessary (and worthwhile).”

The court’s decision will allow thousands more families to join the class-action lawsuit. In addition, Sabraw scheduled a hearing for later this month in which he will determine if the Trump administration must identify the additional family members and reunite them all. He said:

“The Court has an obligation to resolve that question, especially for parents who may have been deported without their children, and although it may be burdensome, it clearly can be done.”

Senior Republican Says Democrats Are Unlikely to Get Access to Evidence from Mueller Probe

Senior Republican Says Democrats Are Unlikely to Get Access to Evidence from Mueller Probe
By David Morgan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s Justice Department is unlikely to grant Democrats in Congress access to underlying evidence from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, a top congressional Republican said on Friday.

If Representative Doug Collins is right, Democratic-led congressional committees that have launched their own probes of Trump may be stuck with a Mueller investigation report that serves more as a general guidebook than a detailed roadmap of Russian interference and any Trump campaign collusion.

Democrats, who control the House of Representatives, want congressional investigators to have access to Mueller’s grand jury evidence and other information from the probe, fearing that Attorney General William Barr could release only a summary of Mueller’s report.

But Collins, the senior Republican on the House Judiciary Committee who met with Barr last week, told reporters that he expects any effort by Democrats to obtain such data from the Justice Department to end up in court, unless Mueller finds that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.

“They have never released it, and we don’t expect that to happen again now,” said Collins.

The Mueller report, Washington’s most eagerly anticipated tome in years, is expected soon. Barr must decide what to do with it, a major test for the new Justice Department chief.

Republicans Are So Corrupt That They're Celebrating Mitch McConnell Obstructing Anti-Corruption Bill

Republicans Are So Corrupt That They’re Celebrating Mitch McConnell Obstructing Anti-Corruption Bill

Republican corruption has reached the point where they are actively celebrating the fact that Mitch McConnell will obstruct an anti-corruption bill.

Check out this video released by the NRCC:
To Republicans, being anti-corruption is not the same as socialism, even though corruption is the common enemy of both capitalism and democracy, which are two systems that Republicans used to believe in.

The Republican Party has become so corrupt that they are celebrating the obstruction of the anti-corruption bill. H.R. 1 also gets rid of dark money, which is the lifeblood of the Republican Party and protects voting rights at a time when Republicans can only win elections in some parts of the country by making it more difficult to vote.

Ronald Reagan’s Republican Party believed in democracy and were dedicated fighters against the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Donald Trump’s Republican Party is potentially infiltrated by Russia, and actively undermines democracy at home and abroad.

The Republican Party has been remade in the image of Donald Trump, where anyone enforces the law is bad, and corruption is good.

"Empire" actor Jussie Smollett has been indicted by a grand jury in Chicago on 16 felony counts after allegedly lying to police about being the victim of a racist and homophobic hate crime.

Smollett was charged last month with felony disorderly conduct for the allegedly false report he made with Chicago police on Jan. 29, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. In it, he claimed he was assaulted by two masked men who hurled racist and homophobic slurs.

The actor, 36, who is black and gay, also said his attackers poured what he believed was bleach over him and put a noose around his neck.

Smollett and his attorneys have denied the allegations against him.

This is a developing story.

Starting in 2021, Americans will need a visa to travel to EU

Starting in 2021, Americans will need a visa to travel to EU
By Rafael Bernal - 03/08/19 12:54 PM EST

The European Union announced Friday it will require a visa for Americans traveling to Europe as of 2021.

U.S. nationals crossing the pond will need a passport and a credit or debit card to apply for a European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) permit that will allow them to visit Europe for less than 90 days.

Previously, Americans had been exempt from visa requirements when traveling to EU nations.

The ETIAS system is similar to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) system the United States uses for countries in the Visa Waiver Program, which covers all EU countries except for Cyprus, Poland, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania.

ETIAS and ESTA don't require consular interviews nor the same degree of background checks as regular visas, but do require a payment and registration prior to travel.

Warren Is Going to Keep Dumping Big and Interesting Ideas on You Friggin' Dolts Until You Pay Attent

Elizabeth Warren Is Going to Keep Dumping Big and Interesting Ideas on You Friggin’ Dolts Until You Pay Attention

On Friday, Democratic 2020 presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren introduced a plan to break up Amazon, Facebook, and Google on the grounds that they are monopolies. It’s only the latest detailed policy proposal (detailed by early-stages-of-a-presidential-primary standards, at least) that she’s released or reintroduced since announcing in January that she was considering a run. Others:

• The creation of a U.S. Office of Public Integrity to enforce new rules against the corrupt lobbying practices that essentially function as a way to bribe members of Congress and the executive branch.

• The creation of a federal system for funding locally run child care providers that would guarantee that no one in the U.S. has to spend more than 7 percent of their household income on child care.

• An annual 2 or 3 percent “wealth tax” on fortunes larger than $50 million.

While obviously not everyone on the left thinks these proposals are perfect, Warren’s plans have generally gotten good reviews from advocates and wonks. She’s also become the first 2020 candidate to declare that, in addition to not accepting corporate donations, she won’t do big-donor fundraisers or private donor-fundraising calls. Unfortunately for her, none of this has helped her position in the polls that much. She’s averaging 7 percent in early surveys, which is good in the sense that it puts her fourth (behind Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and Kamala Harris) in a field of like a billion people, but not good in the sense that 7 percent is not a high number of percents, especially for someone who is already fairly well-known as a national figure. Warren has done some well-received events on the ground in Iowa, but she’ll have to continue to work to translate her wonk energy into emotional/narrative/personality-oriented appeal if she’s going to have a chance to win.

In other words, maybe all you slack-jawed dopes could look up from your Instagram Stories about Pete Davidson to listen to Elizabeth Warren for a second, eh?

Pentagon To Tap Military Pensions Fund For Border Wall

Pentagon To Tap Military Pensions Fund For Border Wall
March 7, 2019 Immigration, Military

The Associated Press reports:

The Pentagon is planning to tap $1 billion in leftover funds from military pay and pension accounts to help President Donald Trump pay for his long-sought border wall, a top Senate Democrat said Thursday.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told The Associated Press, “It’s coming out of military pay and pensions. $1 billion. That’s the plan.” Durbin said, “Imagine the Democrats making that proposal — that for whatever our project is, we’re going to cut military pay and pensions.”

Durbin, the top Democrat on the Appropriations panel for the Pentagon, was among a bipartisan group of lawmakers who met with Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan on Thursday morning.

Conservative Columnist Wants to Boycott Girl Scout Cookies Because AOC Won't Tagalog

Thin Skin Mints: Conservative Columnist Wants to Boycott Girl Scout Cookies Because Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Won’t Tagalong
Stephen A. Crockett Jr.

Snowflakes on the right have reached a new low after a conservative columnist called for a boycott of Girl Scout Cookies because freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) used to be a Girl Scout.

I. Wish. I. Was. Kidding.

According to the Hill, conservative Do-si-do, Jane Chastain published her boo-boo ass article on the World Net Daily, calling for a boycott of the popular cookies because the Girl Scouts today “are a far cry from those of my youth, which trained us to put God and country before everything else.

“Today, God in the Girl Scout promise has an asterisk, meaning the great I AM and His moral absolutes can be replaced by anything, including oneself,” Chastain wrote, the Hill reports.

She then went on to shame the organization whose motto is “building girls of courage, confidence, and character” for promoting Ocasio-Cortez as a successful alum of the group.

“Before you decide to embrace an International Women’s Day celebration or buy the cookies, ask yourself, ‘Will the country be better off with more representatives like the young socialist Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez?’,” Chastain said.

I would just like to note here that Ocasio-Cortez did the impossible, going from bartender to congresswoman and seems to incite a level of annoyance on the right not seen since a black senator from Chicago ran for president.

Even Ocasio-Cortez found the absurd article humorous.

In a post on Twitter Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez included a screenshot of Chastain’s article, writing, “Boycotting cookies that teach little girls leadership skills to own the libs, nice job,” with a thumbs up emoji, the Hill reports.
Ocasio-Cortez added in a follow-up tweet that she’s “extraordinarily proud of the role my constituents have played in helping to establish + support Troop 6000, the first-ever @girlscouts troop for girls experiencing homelessness.”

University dean resigns after school denies Chick-fil-A a location on campus

Such christian tolerance!

University dean resigns after school denies Chick-fil-A a location on campus

Cynthia Newman, dean of the college of business administration at Rider University in New Jersey, has resigned from that position after her school denied Chick-fil-A a campus location "based on the company's record widely perceived to be in opposition to the LGBTQ+ community." (Newman will continue as a tenured professor though.) According to the university administrators, Chick-fil-A's "corporate values have not sufficiently progressed enough to align with those of Rider."

I first suspected Newman stepped down because she loves Chick-fil-A's waffle fries so much, but she says she actually has "a problem with University leadership passing judgement on Chick-fil-A’s values which are reflective with the values of the Christian as well as other faiths.”

“I endeavor every day to do exactly what Chick-fil-A puts forward as its overarching corporate value: to glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to me and to have a positive influence on all who come into contact with me," Newman said in her resignation speech.

From CNN:

Newman wrote that she asked administrators to apologize for offending Christians, but ultimately decided to step down after the university stuck to its original stance.

"While we respect Dr. Newman's personal decision, we maintain that the decision about choosing an on-campus restaurant franchise was in no way a judgment on religious values," Kristine Brown, a spokeswoman for Rider University, said in a statement to CNN.

"Rather, our intention was to foster a sense of respect and belonging of all members of the campus community, including those who identify as LGBTQ+."
