Trump Looks Close to Full Derailment
September 4, 2020 at 7:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Stephen Collinson: “There have been many weeks when the Trump train has looked like it’s going to jump the tracks. But in the seven days since the Republican convention, the President has come perhaps as close as he ever has to a full derailment.”

“The outrages, conspiracy theories and drama have come so fast that it’s almost impossible to believe Donald Trump can keep this up for another eight weeks until Election Day.
But as Democratic nominee Joe Biden begins to travel and to offer an alternative vision of sober presidential-style leadership, events of the last few days have clarified the personality clash and issues that will decide the race.”

Russia Amplifying Trump Allegations on Mail Voting
September 3, 2020 at 4:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

Russia has sought to “amplify” concerns over the integrity of U.S. elections by promoting allegations that mail-in voting will lead to widespread fraud, according to an intelligence bulletin obtained by ABC News, again echoing a frequent and unfounded complaint raised by President Trump.

From the bulletin: “Russian state media and proxy websites in mid-August 2020 criticized the integrity of expanded and universal vote-by-mail, claiming ineligible voters could receive ballots due to out-of-date voter rolls, leaving a vast amount of ballots unaccounted for and vulnerable to tampering.”

What Did That Dumb Orange Motherfucker Say Now? (Laura Ingraham Interview Edition)

Yeah, you've heard some of the appalling shit that Donald Trump squeezed out of his mouth hole while being interviewed by Lauren "Fuck You, Tucker, I'm the Craziest Motherfucker on This Bullshit Network" Ingraham on Fox "news." You heard him talk about how rich people from the "dark shadows" really control Joe Biden. You heard him say how anarchists in black clothes were flying to protests. You heard him compare a cop shooting an unarmed black man to a golfer choking on a putt.

But did you hear his opinion of Black Lives Matter? No? He said that, upon hearing the phrase, "I said, 'That’s a terrible name. It’s so discriminatory.' It’s bad for black people."

And what about this completely nutzoid batshittery: "Black Lives Matter came into existence, walking down the street, screaming, 'Pigs in a blanket, fry them like bacon.' And that was about police officers. That was representing police. They were pigs, pigs in a blanket, like the sausages or hot dogs, fry them like bacon."

First off, no one affiliated with Black Lives Matter said that when it was chanted in Minnesota in 2015. Second, what the fuck with the free association of pork products? Trump brings up this 30-second chant from 5 years ago constantly to discredit the entire Black Lives Matter movement. It's almost as if he's someone who has said a ton of awful shit that should completely discredit him.

Trump wasn't done shitting on protesters who don't fly Trump flags. When Frau Ingraham reminded him that Oregon's governor said that "no one is safe in Trump's America," he responded, "That’s a violent person, frankly. That’s violent. They stick up for the violence. The people that are getting hurt, they don’t care about. They don’t care about these people. It’s a weird thing. It’s like warped minds." And he added, "If it weren’t Donald Trump’s America, to just use the expression as I’m president, you would have riots like you’ve never seen." You got that bullshit? Yeah, there are riots now, but if Joe Biden is elected or if Hillary Clinton had been elected, well, then there would have been real riots. In other words, he's claiming that he's keeping us safe because the violence isn't as bad as he thinks it would be. It would be like if someone shot you outside Jeffrey Dahmer's apartment and said, "Yeah, I know you're bleeding to death, but at least you're not gonna get skull-fucked by a cannibal."

New Engineering Report Finds Privately Built Border Wall Will Fail

New Engineering Report Finds Privately Built Border Wall Will Fail
The report, set to be filed in federal court this week, confirms that portions of the wall are in danger of overturning if not fixed.

This story was published originally by ProPublica, a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power.

It’s not a matter of if a privately built border fence along the shores of the Rio Grande will fail, it’s a matter of when, according to a new engineering report on the troubled project.

The report is one of two new studies set to be filed in federal court this week that found numerous deficiencies in the 3-mile border fence, built this year by North Dakota-based Fisher Sand and Gravel. The reports confirm earlier reporting from ProPublica and The Texas Tribune, which found that segments of the structure were in danger of overturning due to extensive erosion if not fixed and properly maintained. Fisher dismissed the concerns as normal post-construction issues.

Company president Tommy Fisher, a frequent guest on Fox News, had called the Rio Grande fence the “Lamborghini” of border walls and bragged that his company’s methods could help Trump reach his Election Day goal of about 500 new miles of barriers along the southern border.

The CDC has notified public health officials in all 50 states and five large cities to prepare to distribute a coronavirus vaccine to health care workers and other high-risk groups “as soon as late October or early November,” the New York Times reports.

“The new CDC guidance is the latest sign of an accelerating race for a vaccine to greatly ease a pandemic that has killed more than 184,000 Americans.”

Eric Boehlert: How Trump's "law and order" lies get promoted by the press

How Trump’s “law and order” lies get promoted by the press
Dems blamed for GOP mayhem
Eric Boehlert

Actively inciting political violence, Trump continues his unprecedented push for re-election by willingly putting people’s lives at risk. He’s sprinting through a treacherous crossroads in American history, and much of the press is failing the challenge. News outlets are neglecting to aggressively and accurately describe Trump’s dangerous ways as he celebrates arbitrary violence and civil breakdown. Instead, they’re buying into his “law and order” rhetoric, and actually positioning him as a defender of stability.

Embracing GOP talking points, the campaign press is convinced Democrat Joe Biden is the one paying a political price for protest violence that has sprung up in recent weeks, even though Trump is the one encouraging the mayhem. Trump refused to condemn the killing of Black Lives Matters protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man. The BLM protesters were gunned down by a white, right-wing, Trump fan. In fact, Trump offered up a public defense of the shooter.

Since the killings, the media have been filled with claims that, politically, the violence is hurting Democrats. But how are headlines about a vigilante Trump supporter killing protesters in the streets supposed to hurt Democrats? If that were the case, wouldn’t Trump be hoping his supporters kill lots of people, because the political press will keep depicting the murders as Democratic setbacks? (i.e. All violence helps Trump.) This narrative is wildly irresponsible. The press, wed to regurgitating GOP talking points, is rewarding Trump for instigating political violence.

How is civil unrest the fault of the party out of power? Republicans run the federal government, but Democrats are to blame for the state of the nation? It’s up to a presidential challenger to heal a nation in crisis? That’s an absurd and unprecedented premise for any presidential campaign. Yet Trump’s rhetoric is being used as the starting point for a completely misguided and one-sided discussion about “law and order.”

snip//

As Trump readied his trip to Kenosha on Tuesday, the Times, in a bout of straight-up campaign stenography, reported “Mr. Trump and his advisers have grown especially energized in recent days as they have pressed their law-and-order issue.” That same day, Bloomberg News reported that Kenosha had been “gripped by violence” since the Blake shooting one week ago, echoing GOP talking points. But that’s just not true. Remaining protests in Kenosha have all been peaceful.

Question: As bouts of political violence do flare up, is there any scenario where the press will consider them to be bad news for Trump, or is everything a setback for Democrats?

Trump moves to ban evictions nationwide through December

Trump moves to ban evictions nationwide through December
The agency order would impose criminal penalties on landlords who violate the ban.

The Trump administration said on Tuesday that it will ban evictions of tenants who are unable to pay rent because of the coronavirus crisis through the end of the year with a broad new order under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s public health powers.

The agency order, the result of an Aug. 8 executive action by President Donald Trump directing the CDC to study the issue, would impose criminal penalties on landlords who violate the ban. Evictions for reasons other than nonpayment of rent will be allowed to proceed.

It's the administration's boldest move yet to head off the specter of mass evictions in the final months before the election as the crisis caused by the pandemic shows few signs of abating. Trump has come under increasing pressure to act ever since a federal moratorium lapsed at the end of July. A $600-a-week federal boost to unemployment benefits — which many struggling tenants used to pay at least part of their rent as the crisis progressed — expired the same week.

DHS Blocked Intelligence Memo That Warned of Kremlin Plan to Attack Biden’s Mental Health, Says Report
SOUNDS FAMILIAR

The Department of Homeland Security intervened in July to stop the publication of an intelligence bulletin that warned of a Kremlin plan to push “allegations about the poor mental health” of Joe Biden, according to a report from ABC News. The draft bulletin was reportedly submitted to the agency’s legislative and public-affairs office for review at the start of July and, after a few days, it was ready to be sent out to federal, state, and local law-enforcement partners. However, a senior DHS official is said to have intervened and the bulletin was never circulated. An email sent by DHS Chief of Staff John Gountanis reportedly said: “Please hold on sending this one out until you have a chance to speak to [acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf].” The document reportedly focuses on Russia’s attacks on Biden’s mental fitness—one of the attack lines most-used by President Donald Trump and his re-election campaign. In a statement, a DHS spokesperson said that the bulletin was “delayed” because it didn’t meet the agency’s standards. Democrats, intel officials, and election watchdogs have expressed outrage over new Trump administration plans to put all election-interference briefings in writing only, cutting off in-person briefings with little more than two months to Election Day.
