Far-right extremists pose rising threat in North Texas around election, FBI's Dallas office says

The FBI’s Dallas field office warned law enforcement this week that far-right extremist groups are likely to expand their influence and could pose a violent threat in North Texas, especially between the Nov. 3 election and January’s presidential inauguration.

The election could serve as a “potential flashpoint,” says a field office report that was first made public by The Nation.

The field office’s report — marked “unclassified/law enforcement sensitive” — says the fringe boogaloo movement is likely to step up its violent anti-government rhetoric and criminal activities, increasing the threat of violence in North Texas.

Montana Man Charged with 64 Child Sex Crimes Gets Deferred Prison Sentence

After accepting a plea deal from prosecutors, a Montana man who was charged with 64 individual counts, including rape and sexual abuse of children, may never spend any time behind bars after receiving a 1-year deferred prison sentence on Monday.

William Edward Miller Jr., according to reports, received the sentence from Judge Elizabeth Best.

Miller will be on unsupervised probation for the next year. If, after the year, the 51-year-old has committed no other crimes, the entire matter will be expunged from his record.

He was accused of raping a 14-year-old girl and permitting an 11-year-old boy to rape her, too.

In August of 2019, state authorities filed 64 counts of sexual abuse of children, alleging that Miller possessed images of child pornography and bestiality on his phone and laptop.

In court, Miller said the entire case destroyed the lives of him and his wife. "We're suffering," the paper quotes him as saying. "I’ve served time in jail for stuff that I didn’t even do." Miller said he wants to be a good person but has had "really bad luck," the paper reports.

A Mail Carrier Took People's Absentee Ballot Requests And Switched Their Party To Republican

A West Virginia mail carrier is facing prison time after admitting he attempted election fraud by changing the party registrations of people who had requested absentee ballots for the state's June primary, officials announced Thursday.

Thomas Cooper, 47, of Dry Fork signed an agreement in which he pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to defraud the residents of West Virginia of a fair election and one count of injury to the mail.

Cooper attorney Scott Curnutte told BuzzFeed News his client had engaged in a "silly lark."

"He is deeply sorry for the implications for our democratic process," Curnutte said. "It should be remembered, however, that the mail he altered were requests for ballots, not ballots themselves."

Greg Abbott has issued a Proclamation Allowing Postponement of Local Elections Until Nov 3rd

The move comes after Abbott issued a disaster declaration over the pandemic that paved the way for him to suspend parts of the state’s election code to allow for postponements. Notably, individual municipalities will still have to act to postpone their elections, but Abbott urged officials to move them to November.

"I strongly encourage local election officials to take advantage of these waivers and postpone their elections until November," Abbott said in a statement. "Right now, the state's focus is responding to COVID-19 — including social distancing and avoiding large gatherings. By delaying this election, our local election officials can assist in that effort."

Abbott’s proclamation comes on the heels of Texas Democrats’ request for the state to consider a universal voting-by-mail contingency plan for the upcoming elections, including the May 26 runoff that Abbott has not yet issued guidance on. The proposal would mark a massive expansion of voting by mail, which has been fairly limited in Texas. To be eligible under typical circumstances, a voter has to be 65 years or older, have a disability or illness, be out of the county during the election period, or be confined in jail.

Navajo Flatbread Recipe: For these trying times

Navajo Flatbread:
Makes 6

2 cups flour
1 - 1 1/4cup of lukewarm water
1 table spoon baking soda
1 tsp kosher salt
1 table spoon oil/butter/shortening

Mix dry ingredients together and add most water, mix and add water until it has the consistency of tacky pizza dough.
Knead for a few minutes.
Let rest in greased bowl for 30- 60 minutes.
Divide into 6 pieces and roll out on floured surface thin. (Tortilla thickness)
Hear griddle to 350F.
Cook until golden brown spots and flip, cooking until done.
They can be made ahead and kept under a flour towel or frozen for later use.
