About Me

I've been a female working a "man's job" (mechanical engineer), stay at home Mom (6 kids), working Mom (6 kids to put through college), unemployed, underemployed, temporarily employed and now working from home! We live on an old, small farm with 2 dogs and 2 cats in the house, variable number of chickens out in the yard.

Sometimes, when a horse is dead, it is time to stop beating it -

let alone dragging it into a new OP and starting to beat it again.

Hey women of DU - I need some suggestions-

I'm going to be on the road, living in the same hotel room for the next month or so. I hate leaving things out on the bathroom counter and making life tougher for the cleaning person. I also hate dumping my makeup into a bag and pulling it out every morning. So - any suggestions for carrying my make-up in an organized fashion without adding too much weight to my bag?

Hey - you know you owe it to the next generation!

thanks to Lucinda for posting the correct link!

I only have so much energy to do things, and it's very pleasant outside,

so the dust in the house will have to wait until the November rains!

Why do we expect our police officers to be intake personnel for the mentally ill?

We expect people with minimal if any training to talk to someone for a few minutes and decide whether or not they should be forcibly committed to psychiatric care. Add to the mix that often the law requires that the person be an immediate threat to himself and/or others.

I guess this matches up with the rest of our current policies which see more mentally ill people in prisons than hospitals!

How do you look for work?

It's a serious question, inspired by this:

Work your way through all the advice, and all too often it comes down to "networking". That's a new term for the old practice of hearing about a job opening from someone you know. But what if you're a fresh college grad and don't know anybody?

Godzilla spoiler alert: Do not read the review in the New Yorker -

it reveals critical plot details.

birds away from your berry patch? (Of course, in my case, the birds are my free range chickens!)
