UPDATE: House Managers Respond to Trump

This looks like a great brief https://www.democracydocket.com/2021/02/house-responds-to-trump/

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The House Impeachment Mangers filed their response to former President Trump’s answer to the Article of Impeachment one day before trial is set to start in the Senate. The House Managers denied “each and every allegation in the Answer that denies the acts, knowledge, intent, or wrongful conduct charged against President Trump.” The House Managers stood by their impeachment article and again asserted that the latest impeachment is within the jurisdiction of the Senate.

Countering Trump’s argument that because he has left office he can no longer be impeached, the House Managers wrote that “there is no ‘January Exception’ to the Constitution that allows Presidents to abuse power in their final days without accountability.” As for Trump’s reliance on the First Amendment to protect political speech, the brief called this defense “utterly baseless.”

The impeachment trial in the Senate starts tomorrow, February 9, at 1:00 PM ET.

GOP registration drop after Capitol attack is part of larger trend

I was pleased to see the GOP lose a good number of voters due to the attacks/acts of terrorism committed on Jan. 6. The GOP has been losing voters due to some interesting demographic trends and soon the GOP will be composed of mainly non-college educated males. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/meet-the-press/gop-registration-drop-after-capitol-attack-part-larger-trend-n1256966

WASHINGTON — In the weeks since the January riot at the Capitol, there has been a raft of stories about voters across the country leaving the Republican Party. Some of the numbers are eye-catching and suggest that the GOP may be shrinking before our eyes, but a closer look at the numbers over time shows that a larger change has been working its way through the party for some time.

In fact, when one takes into account shifts in the composition of the Democratic Party, the real story seems to be more about a deeper remaking of the nation’s two major political parties.

To be sure, the headlines from the last few weeks have been striking, with multiple states reporting large declines in Republican voter registrations.

....Yet, in a broader sense, these numbers and others show party movement and they suggest a larger change may be underway within the GOP and the Democrats. Data from the NBC News poll show some notable changes over the last decade.

We took merges of our poll data from 2010 and 2020 to look at the profiles of the two major parties over that time and we found big shifts in education, profession and gender. Let's start with education

And beyond education and occupation, the parties have seen some sharp shifts in gender.

Trump may be accelerating these trends and driving key groups away from the GOP so that only poorly educated white males will be left supporting the GOP.

GOP registration drop after Capitol attack is part of larger trend

The insurrection has affected voter registration by members of the GOP. A good number of former republicans have left the party. These defections are on top of some long term demographic trends https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/meet-the-press/gop-registration-drop-after-capitol-attack-part-larger-trend-n1256966

Whitmer wants attorneys in Michigan election challenge suit disbarred

These idiots need to be disbarred
https://twitter.com/Biden20202024/status/1356618269273260035

Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) called for the disbarment of Michigan's Greg Rohl, Scott Hagerstrom and Stefanie Junttila, as well as Texas-based Sidney Powell, a pro-Trump lawyer who promoted unproven election fraud claims.

The state officials accused the attorneys of contributing to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot through their involvement in litigation that would overturn President Biden's victory in the state, according to The Detroit News.

The four "used their law license in an attempt to disenfranchise Michigan voters and undermine the faith of the public in the legitimacy of the recent presidential election, and lent credence to untruths that led to violence and unrest," the officials wrote.

The lawsuit, King v. Whitmer, which was based on a number of unproven claims and conspiracy theories, asked for the state's electors to be disqualified in favor of declaring then-President Trump the winner. A U.S. district judge tossed the lawsuit Dec. 7 and said it was intended to "ignore the will of millions of voters."
