Former geography teacher Tim Walz in full map nerd mode

This is a keynote speech he gave earlier this year at the Esri GIS (geographic information systems) user conference. The first clip is highlights, second is the full speech (which if you have a 1/2 hour to burn I highly recommend).

Trump knows soldiers are braver than him so he hates them

His repeated trashing of veterans is not about his lack of understanding of service or sacrifice. It is much simpler.

Trump sees himself as king of the jungle. The manliest of all manly men. Except deep down he knows it isn’t true. And for him no one confirms it more than someone who made a life choice he avoided, to be a soldier who, when called into battle, excelled.

This infuriates him, so he needs to tear them down. To compensate for his self-perceived absence of valor he touts the things that he has and, in his mind, they lack. Health, wealth, fame, power. You’d think he’d be happier thinking that he has so much more than a soldier with a medal around his neck.

But he wants it all and the war hero has something he will never possess. So he keeps returning to theme of the broken-down warrior. He’s standing and they’re hobbled. The military is for dupes. Etc. But, again, this is not primarily about his disdain for service. First and foremost this is a case of the wounded male pride of a severely deformed human.

Trump supporter asks what are you going to do to reduce housing costs, Trump says "drill baby drill"

This was on Chris Hayes last night. Hard to find a better example of how his campaign is running on empty and why his numbers with non-college educated whites are deteriorating.
