FCC commissioner on Trump's media threats: 'History won't be kind to silence'

http://money.cnn.com/2017/10/15/media/trump-jessica-rosenworcel-nbc-license/index.html?iid=surge-story-summary

A top Federal Communications Commission official is putting pressure on her colleagues to end their silence amid President Trump's threats against TV networks that are critical of his administration.

Democratic commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, who was first appointed by President Obama and brought back to the commission by Trump, said the FCC should make it very clear that the agency will not revoke licenses simply because Trump does not like their coverage.

"History won't be kind to silence," Rosenworcel, who is one of five FCC commissioners, told CNN's Brian Stelter on "Reliable Sources" Sunday. "I think it's important for all the commissioners to make clear that they support the First Amendment, and that the agency will not revoke a broadcast license simply because the president is dissatisfied with the licensee's coverage."

Trump lit a fire under First Amendment proponents last week when he called NBC a partisan institution whose licenses should be "challenged and, if appropriate, revoked."

NBC, like many news outlets, has aggressively reported on story lines that are critical of the president. It's fueled Trump's critiques of the press and prompted him to brand truthful stories about his presidency "fake news."

Here's a woman who might get fired for being part of the deep state. She's a Dem of course. It's good to know we still have some good people in positions of power speaking out and doing good things to resist tyranny from within. This should be encouraged everywhere.

Puerto Rican exodus could boost Small Town, USA

http://money.cnn.com/2017/10/13/news/economy/puerto-rican-maria-migration-small-towns/index.html?iid=hp-stack-dom

They're already landing in Lorain, Ohio -- Puerto Rican families, with few possessions and bleak memories.
"We started to see it last week," says Victor Leandry, director of El Centro, a nonprofit social services agency based in this faded industrial town on the shores of Lake Erie. "Just today, we have at least four or five new families. When I walk into the building at nine in the morning, we are seeing already a migration."

This isn't the norm. In what's shaping up to be the second greatest exodus to the mainland since World War II, most Puerto Ricans fleeing the devastation of Hurricane Maria will end up in New York and Florida, where hundreds of thousands of islanders already live.

But as Puerto Rico's economy has deteriorated in recent years -- the country's diaspora has ballooned to 5.4 million people, far exceeding the 3.4 million who live on the island itself -- many have migrated to other parts of the U.S.

Some who leave the island as a result of Hurricane Maria will end up in lesser-known Puerto Rican communities in states like Ohio, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Illinois.

Many towns, like Lorain, could really use the newcomers.
"As tragic as this [situation] is, it could be helpful to the Northeast Ohio economy," says Jose Feliciano, a lawyer who chairs the Hispanic Roundtable of Cleveland. "Ohio needs bodies for work."

Here's an opportunity for our party to earn the votes of thousands of US citizens who have been screwed very badly by the other party and could use some help to get settled in the mainland of some big swing states. They need housing, jobs, school enrollment, and voter registration, among other stuff. Many on the other side still don't know Puerto Ricans can vote and will be in for a big surprise.

Trump does nothing to stop 175 American deaths a day

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2017/10/11/830a96ee-aec8-11e7-be94-fabb0f1e9ffb_story.html?utm_term=.0ba8e39bf1ff

Americans are dying at the rate of 175 a day from opioid overdoses, but President Trump has yet to deliver his promised strategy to end the crisis.

And so the people’s representatives, in the absence of presidential leadership, did about the only thing they could do. They had a day of opioid karaoke.

There wasn’t actual music. But it was open-mic day Wednesday before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The panel invited members of Congress to take the witness seat and, in three minutes or less, sing a sad song about how the opioid crisis is ruining the lives of their constituents.

“In Oregon alone more people died last year from drug overdoses than from car accidents,” said Rep. Greg Walden (R).

“The opioid epidemic is having devastating consequences in my home state” of New Jersey, said Rep. Frank Pallone (D).

“In 2016, more than 2,000 opioid deaths in Michigan alone,” said Rep. Fred Upton (R).

“There are enough bottles of painkillers in circulation for nearly every Hoosier to have one of their own,” said Rep. Susan Brooks (R) of Indiana.

“Five-hundred and one New Mexicans died overdose-related deaths,” said Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D).

“Drug overdoses cause nearly four times as many deaths as compared to traffic accidents” in Ohio, said Rep. Bob Latta (R).

The opioid epidemic disproportionately affects rural areas, red states, and many Republicans who may have voted for Dolt 45 because of his campaign promises to end the epidemic. It's true this problem started long before he came along. But cheeto twitler doesn't do anything to help. He's such a piece of shit.

He had no plan to replace Obamacare, no infrastructure plan, no tax plan, no foreign policy. But inaction on opioids is particularly ruinous, as the overdoses kill more people than car accidents and more than AIDS killed at its peak. In lieu of a plan, Trump has threatened to arrest more people, suggested kids say no to drugs, and sent the first lady to West Virginia on Tuesday to tour an opioid addiction center for infants.

British IS recruiter Sally-Anne Jones 'killed by drone'

Source: BBC

British IS recruiter Sally-Anne Jones was reportedly killed in a US drone strike in Syria in June.

Jones, from Chatham in Kent, joined so-called Islamic State after converting to Islam and travelling to Syria in 2013. Her death was first reported by The Sun.

The BBC's security correspondent Frank Gardner said Jones had been a useful propaganda agent for IS on social media and her death would be "significant".

Whitehall officials have declined to comment publicly. However, they have not denied the story, and US sources are confident she was killed in an unmanned drone strike in June, our correspondent added.

Trump expected to tap Kirstjen Nielsen to lead Department of Homeland Security

Source: Washington Post

President Trump is expected to nominate White House aide Kirstjen Nielsen to be homeland security secretary, according to three White House officials familiar with the decision, a job left vacant when John F. Kelly left the department to become White House chief of staff in July.
The announcement could come as soon as Wednesday, although the sources cautioned nothing is set until Trump publicly announces her as the pick.

Nielsen, a cybersecurity expert who served as Kelly’s chief of staff when he was DHS secretary, accompanied him to the White House as his deputy and quickly emerged as a controversial presence.

Her detractors viewed her as brusque and, at times, unresponsive, as she worked with Kelly to streamline West Wing operations and instill discipline in a White House often void of it. But her allies and fans she said was simply helping to professionalize the West Wing — the sort of necessary but thankless task that often leaves some staff members griping.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

Utah police officer fired after manhandling, arresting nurse who was doing her job

Source: Washington Post

A Salt Lake City police detective was fired and his supervisor demoted Tuesday for their roles in the arrest of a nurse who was manhandled and shoved screaming into a squad car as she tried to protect the legal rights of an unconscious patient.

Detective Jeff Payne was fired and James Tracy, his watch commander, was demoted two ranks from lieutenant to officer after an internal review by the Salt Lake City Police Department found their actions toward the nurse violated department policy and undermined public trust.

“I have lost faith and confidence in your ability to continue to serve as a member of the Salt Lake City Police Department,” Chief Mike Brown wrote in a termination letter to Payne that was posted by the Deseret News.

“I am deeply troubled by your lack of sound, professional judgment and your discourteous, disrespectful and unwarranted behavior, which unnecessarily escalated a situation that could and should have been resolved in a manner far different from the course of action you chose to pursue,” the letter read.

The asshole cop was fired and his commander was demoted.

Police the police. It's good to see them held accountable.

Woman in Dove ad says company should have defended its vision

http://money.cnn.com/2017/10/10/media/dove-ad-woman-responds/index.html?iid=hp-stack-dom

A woman featured in a controversial Dove ad says the spot is being misinterpreted.

Lola Ogunyemi, a black woman, wrote Tuesday in the Guardian that she agreed with the company's decision to apologize for its ad, which was seen by many as racially insensitive.

But she also said Dove should have defended its creative vision.
"I feel the public was justified in their initial outrage," she said. "Having said that, I can also see that a lot has been left out."

Dove came under fire after it posted a 3-second GIF to its Facebook page Friday. It showed a looping image of Ogunyemi removing a dark brown t-shirt to reveal a white woman. She then removes her beige t-shirt to reveal a third woman.

"All of the women in the shoot understood the concept and overarching objective -- to use our differences to highlight the fact that all skin deserves gentleness," she said.

I am the woman in the 'racist Dove ad'. I am not a victim
-Lola Ogunyemi

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/oct/10/i-am-woman-racist-dove-ad-not-a-victim

From a very young age, I’ve been told, “You’re so pretty … for a dark-skinned girl.” I am a Nigerian woman, born in London and raised in Atlanta. I’ve grown up very aware of society’s opinion that dark-skinned people, especially women, would look better if our skin were lighter.

I know that the beauty industry has fueled this opinion with its long history of presenting lighter, mixed-race or white models as the beauty standard. Historically, and in many countries still today, darker models are even used to demonstrate a product’s skin-lightening qualities to help women reach this standard.

This repressive narrative is one I have seen affect women from many different communities I’ve been a part of. And this is why, when Dove offered me the chance to be the face of a new body wash campaign, I jumped.

Having the opportunity to represent my dark-skinned sisters in a global beauty brand felt like the perfect way for me to remind the world that we are here, we are beautiful, and more importantly, we are valued.

I love liberals. Liberals are my favorite people and it's great that people get outraged at racism. But this Dove ad isn't it. My people's culture does value skin lightening products and view dark skin as a sign of poverty and ugliness that must be washed away if you ever hope to get married, which is racist and wrong. I'm brown. I like Dove for men products. It's OK to look for the rest of a story and it's context before developing an opinion on something. It's good to verify before raising our blood pressure to unhealthy levels.

Trump Knocked Out in First Round of White House I.Q.-Test Tournament After Losing to Betsy DeVos

https://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/trump-knocked-out-in-first-round-of-white-house-iq-test

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In an I.Q.-test tournament devised by Donald Trump to determine the smartest person in his Administration, Trump suffered a humiliating defeat on Tuesday, getting knocked out in the first round by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

Trump had personally created the brackets for the tournament, which he had hoped would lead to an I.Q.-championship showdown between him and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. “He was determined to face Betsy in the first round,” a White House source said of Trump. “He thought it would be like a bye week.”

Trump was stung by DeVos’s upset win, however, and lashed out at the I.Q. test itself, calling it both “fake” and “rigged,” according to the source. “It had been a while since he had taken an I.Q. test,” the source said. “He had forgotten there was a spelling section.”

Elsewhere in the I.Q. tournament, other members of the Trump family were knocked out in the first round as well, with Ivanka Trump falling to Vice-President Mike Pence; Donald Trump, Jr., losing to Trump’s press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders; and Jared Kushner reportedly suffering a lopsided defeat at the hands of Secretary of Energy Rick Perry.
Trump’s son Eric did not participate in the tournament. “That would have been cruel,” the source said.

It's Andy Borowitz. But at this point the truth from this administration is often indistinguishable from satire.

Redbone - Come And Get Your Love - The Midnight Special 1974

Happy Columbus Day!

Redbone is known and accredited in the Smithsonian as the first Native American rock/Cajun group to have a No. 1 single in the United States and internationally. And yes, they were repeatedly told that America "wasn't ready" for a Native American rock band but some people are just so badass they don't care if America is ready for things before doing it anyway. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redbone_(band).

Link Wray is Shawnee

There are people with mixed First Americans heritage in this band:

If an H-1b has an American accent, they are probably not an H-1b. It's race, not citizenship. Americans are more diverse than you think. Millions of US citizens don't look the way you might expect. This fact is very important and will help us win elections.
