Boston bombers: Tsarnaev brothers planned attack for July 4th

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told his interrogators the weekend after he was arrested that he and his brother originally intended to set off their bombs somewhere on the Fourth of July, officials say.

NBC News’ Pete Williams is reporting that the officials say the younger brother said that when the brothers finished the bombs sooner than they expected to, they decided to stage an attack earlier and decided on the Boston Marathon, on Patriot’s Day.

Officials say Tsarnaev also said the bombs were built in the house of his brother, Tamerlan. Authorities had previously disclosed that explosive residue had been found there.

Dzhokhar's Missing Laptop May Have Never Been in the Landfill After All

CNN is reporting that the FBI has recovered Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's laptop. If true, the discovery could provide investigators with a trove of information about the Boston bombing suspects, perhaps including how the brothers learned to make the homemade explosives they are said to have used near the finish line of the Boston marathon.

According to the report, it's not clear how or when the FBI found the laptop, and one of the network's two unnamed federal law enforcement sources said that it wasn't recovered during last week's search of a landfill near Tsarnaev's University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth dorm room. That detail is important because it suggests that the three college students charged yesterday with intentionally hindering the investigation may have held on to the laptop after allegedly dumping a backpack they took from Tsarnaev's room into a dumpster in a bid to help him.

According to the criminal complaint against the trio filed yesterday, one of the suspects, Dias Kadyrbayev, told police he took the laptop from the dorm room almost as an afterthought after finding the backpack, which contained fireworks that had been emptied of gunpowder. The rationale he allegedly offered, however, is more than a little puzzling. In the affidavit's words, Kadyrbayev said he took the laptop "because he did not want Tsarnaev's roommate to think he was stealing or behaving suspiciously by just taking the backpack."

Holy crap...on CNN the guest just said they may have access to the conversation between wife

And bomber. Erin Burnett was asking if they could prove anything if they didn't have something like a voicemail, and the guy said we do have the info. They hadn't identified the bombers so it must be a blanket recording effort?

Now I understand that they can tap us possibly without a warrant, but all calls without a target? Wow.

Two of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s Potential Jihadist Friends Are Dead

As investigators attempt to fill in the massive space between Tamerlan Tsarnaev, loving son and championship boxer, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the dead architect of the Boston Marathon bombing, they're looking to Russia. According to the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, Tsarnaev may have been linked to William Plotnikov, a Canadian "boxer-turned-jihadist" (sounds familiar) who died at the hands of Russian forces in the republic of Dagestan last year, while Tsarnaev was visiting.

Plotnikov's father described to CBC a son that was once a successful boxer and then suddenly turned to radical Islam, which also sounds very familiar. "He had lots of friends and girlfriends. Suddenly finished. No friends, no father, no mother," he said. "Only room and pray. That's it. What happened? Who can change his mind?"

Tsarnaev may have also known, or chatted online, with Makhmud Mansur Nidal, an 18-year-old militant who was reportedly "under surveillance for six months as a suspected recruiter for Islamist insurgents fighting Moscow's rule in the region." Nidal was also killed in Russia, in May 2012 during Tamerlan's six-month visit, in Dagestan's capital Makhachkala, where Tsarnaev's parents live.

"It seems that Tamerlan Tsarnaev came to Dagestan with the aim of joining the insurgents," a Russian security source told Novaya Gazeta. "After Nidal and Plotnikov were destroyed and he lost his contacts, Tsarnaev got frightened and fled." Friends or not, he eventually met the same fate.
