Drones Will Be The New Normal in The U.S. If We Let Them

Here's how it happens: The defense contractors see dollar signs, buy themselves a bouquet of Congress critters, and then suddenly we have an "urgent" civilian need for military equipment. It will keep us "safe". Sure, there'll be a few major collisions and "accidents," but it will become generally accepted as the New Normal. And once that's firmly ensconced in the public mind as necessary, we'll then develop an urgent need for armed drones.

Maybe voters need to rise up against this nonsense:

WASHINGTON - Are unmanned aircraft, known to have difficulty avoiding collisions, safe to use in America's crowded airspace? And would their widespread use for surveillance result in unconstitutional invasions of privacy?

Experts say neither question has been answered satisfactorily. Yet the federal government is rushing to open America's skies to tens of thousands of the drones - pushed to do so by a law championed by manufacturers of the unmanned aircraft.

Report: Israeli Spy Satellites Spot Iranian Ship Being Loaded With Rockets For Gaza

Source: HAARETZ

Israeli spy satellites have spotted an Iranian ship being loaded with missiles that analysts say may be headed for Gaza, The Sunday Times reported.

According to the report, the cargo may include Fajr-5 rockets, like those that were fired by Hamas toward Israel and the stockpiles of which the Israel Defense Forces depleted during the recent round of fighting across the Gaza border, in addition to Shahab-3 ballistic missiles, which could be stationed in Sudan to pose a direct threat to Israel.

“With a lot of effort, Iran has skillfully built a strategic arm pointing at Israel from the south,” an Israeli source was quoted as saying.

The cargo would travel via the Red Sea, Sudan and Egypt, following a well-established route used by Iran to smuggle arms into Gaza, the Times reported.

Extremists Target Arab Cars in East Jerusalem

Eight Arab-owned cars were vandalized in a Palestinian neighborhood in eastern Jerusalem in a suspected price-tag attack.

The cars in the Shufat neighborhood were spray painted with the words “Gaza price tag.” Their tires also were punctured, according to reports. “Price tag” refers to the strategy that Jewish extremists have adopted to exact a price in attacks on Palestinians and Arabs in retribution for settlement freezes and demolitions, or for Palestinian attacks on Jews.

U.S. Detects N.Korea Missile-Test Preparations, Asahi Says

Source: Bloomberg

The U.S. told Japan and South Korea it detected preparations indicating North Korea could be preparing to test long-range ballistic missile as early as this month, the Asahi newspaper reported today.

A press official at South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said he couldn’t confirm the Asahi newspaper report. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to military policy, said the army was watching North Korea as usual and South Korea’s alert level was unchanged.

The warning comes two years after four people were killed when North Korean artillery shelled Yeonpyeong Island near a disputed sea border, and as South Korea prepares for presidential elections next month. North Korea won’t “miss the opportunity” if “warmongers perpetrate another provocation,” an unidentified North Korean military spokesman said in a statement published yesterday by the Korea Central News Agency.

North Korea said in October that it has developed missiles capable of reaching the U.S., a claim disputed by academics including Yang Moo Jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul. The regime in April fired a long-range rocket that failed shortly after liftoff, an act that cost it a food-aid deal with the U.S.

France Indicates Support For Palestinian U.N. Vote

PARIS (Reuters) - France on Thursday indicated it would support efforts by the Palestinians to secure a diplomatic upgrade at the United Nations in a quest for greater international recognition.

Frustrated that their bid for full U.N. membership failed in the U.N. Security Council last year amid U.S. opposition, the Palestinians have launched a watered-down bid for recognition as a "non-member state", similar to the Vatican's U.N. status.

This request can be approved by the U.N. General Assembly, where Washington has no veto, and seems certain to pass.

Without specifically saying which way France would vote, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius hinted at support.

Even More Reason's To Thanks Your Stars...Dan Senor Rips GOP Officials For Turning On Romney

That Rmoney lost...

"It's stunning," former Romney campaign official Dan Senor said of Republicans who are now ripping Mitt Romney after backing him during the presidential race.

“The Friday night before the election, we were in Cincinnati for this huge rally ... tens of thousands of people, you could feel the energy, a hundred top-tier Romney surrogates were at the event. I’m backstage with some of them, I won’t mention their names, but they’re talking about Romney like he’s Reagan. ‘His debate performances were the best performances of any Republican nominee in presidential history. He’s iconic.’ They were talking about him because they believed he was going to win in four or five days. And in fact, some of them were already talking to our transition to position themselves for a Romney cabinet," Senor said on "Morning Joe" today.

“I won't say who they are. They know who they are. They were on television, it was unbelievable, it was five, six days later, absolutely eviscerating him.”

Egypt Emerges As Major Middle East Mediator With Israel-Gaza Cease-Fire

CBS NEWS/ November 21, 2012, 11:03 PM

CAIRO The Gaza cease-fire deal reached Thursday marks a startling trajectory for Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi: an Islamist leader who refuses to talk to Israelis or even say the country's name mediated for it and finally turned himself into Israel's de facto protector.

The accord inserts Egypt to an unprecedented degree into the conflict between Israel and Hamas, establishing it as the arbiter ensuring that militant rocket fire into Israel stops and that Israel allows the opening of the long-blockaded Gaza Strip and stops its own attacks against Hamas.

In return, Morsi emerged as a major regional player. He won the trust of the United States and Israel, which once worried over the rise of an Islamist leader in Egypt but throughout the week-long Gaza crisis saw him as the figure most able to deliver a deal with Gaza's Hamas rulers.

"I want to thank President Morsi for his personal leadership to de-escalate the situation in Gaza and end the violence," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who met Morsi Thursday, said at a Cairo press conference with Egypt's foreign minister announcing the accord.

Israel-Gaza Ceasefire Comes with Pledge from Obama to Seek More Defense Aid for Israel

United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Amr announced ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. There was no signed agreement. The ceasefire is essentially “quiet in exchange for quiet,” as one Israeli diplomatic source put it.

---clip
The statement from President Barack Obama’s administration that was given to the press indicated the administration would “use the opportunity offered by a ceasefire to intensify efforts to help Israel address its security needs, especially the issue of the smuggling of weapons and explosives into Gaza.” President Obama would also seek ”additional funding for Iron Dome and other US-Israel missile defense programs.” According to Haaretz, this was part of conversations that led Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to decide to give a ceasefire “a chance” to possibly help “stabilize” the situation “before exerting more force.”

TV Chef Art Ginsburg, Mr. Food, Dies At 81

Source: Associated Press

Art Ginsburg, the delightfully dorky television chef known as Mr. Food, died at his home in Weston, Fla., Wednesday following a struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was 81.

Ginsburg - who enticed viewers for decades with a can-do focus on easy weeknight cooking and the tagline "Ooh! It's so good!" - was diagnosed just over a year ago. The cancer had gone into remission following early treatments and surgery, but returned earlier this month.

Ginsburg had an unlikely formula for success in this era of reality cooking shows, flashy chefs and artisanal foods. With a pleasantly goofy, grandfatherly manner and a willingness to embrace processed foods, Ginsburg endeared himself to millions of home cooks via 90-second segments syndicated to 125 local television stations around the country.

And though he published 52 Mr. Food-related cookbooks, selling more than 8 million copies, he was little known to the nation's foodies and mostly ignored by the glossy magazines. That was the way he liked it.
