Born good? Babies help unlock the origins of morality

It's a question people have asked for as long as there have been people: are human beings inherently good? Are we born with a sense of morality or do we arrive blank slates, waiting for the world to teach us right from wrong? Or could it be worse? Do we start out nasty, selfish devils, who need our parents, teachers, and religions to whip us into shape?

As we first reported last fall, the only way to know for sure, is to ask a baby. But until recently, it's been hard to persuade them to open up and share their secrets. Enter the baby lab.

This is the creature at the center of the greatest philosophical, moral, and religious debates about the nature of man: the human baby. They don't do much, can't talk, can't write, can't expound at length about their moral philosophies. But does that mean they don't have one? The philosopher Rousseau considered babies "perfect idiots...Knowing nothing," and Yale psychologist Karen Wynn, director of the Infant Cognition Center here, the baby lab, says for most of its history, her field agreed.

Tennessee Titans Rookie Jonathan Willard Saves Family From Burning SUV
Jul 25, 2013 By Ruth Manuel-Logan

When Jonathan “Tig” Willard (pictured) was driving from South Carolina to Tennessee on Tuesday to fight for a roster spot with Tennessee Titans, he noticed an SUV that had flames shooting from its rear. Inside the vehicle was a woman, her three young children and their dog.

Instead of picking up his cell phone and dialing for help, the linebacker took matters into his own hands by saving the family himself, reports TigerNet.com.

Remarkably, the woman and her children were not aware that their vehicle was on fire until Willard began honking his horn to alert them about the situation. By the time the unidentified mom had pulled over, her SUV was engulfed in flames. The woman told the 23-year-old, 240-pound NFL player that she did not stop her SUV at first because she did not think her vehicle was on fire.

Willard and another driver who had witnessed what was going on acted quickly to pull the three children and dog out of the vehicle to safety. The young player then went back for the mom and took her to safety. The SUV wound up becoming totally engulfed in flames within mere minutes of the rescue and blew up four times after the family was rescued.

10-Year-Old Girl Catches Baby Dropped From Burning Apartment In Georgia
The Huffington Post | By Sara Gates

Zna Gresham may not think of herself as a hero, but she is certainly being hailed as one.

In a lifesaving catch, the 10-year-old girl caught a baby that was dropped from a second-floor apartment in Decatur, Ga., after the building caught fire, the Associated Press reports.

The family living in the apartment was trapped by the fire, which reportedly started on the ground floor. DeKalb County Fire Battalion Chief Christopher Morrison said the mother had no choice but to drop her three children out the window.

"The smoke was rising so quickly to the upper floors, they couldn't make their way outside their upper apartment into the hallway because of the smoke. They just went to a window and they threw the child outside to the people, to the neighbors, down on the ground," Morrison explained to WSB Radio.

Dovonta Andrews, 11-Year-Old Detroit Boy, Took Bullet To Save 5-Year-Old Friend
Posted: 07/25/2013 4:48 pm EDT | Updated: 07/25/2013 6:02 pm EDT

A heroic 11-year-old boy from Detroit is recovering after taking a bullet for his 5-year-old friend.

According to WDIV, Dovonta Andrews was on his neighbor's porch with a few other children Tuesday night, when a dispute, allegedly about money, broke out.

A man began shooting, and Andrews responded by pushing his friend out of the way.

"I pushed my little friend to get out of the way," Andrews told WDIV. "Then the bullet hit me."

The bullet went completely through his arm, according to the Detroit Free Press. He was brought to a local hospital with a 30-year-old man who was also shot. Now, Andrews is back home recuperating.
