Ex-intel official who created controversial Trump Russia dossier speaks out

Source: CNN

(CNN)Former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, the man behind the "Steele Dossier" that claimed Russian officials held compromising information on former President Donald Trump, defended the claims made in the dossier in his first on-camera interview since it was revealed in 2017.

In a clip from an upcoming ABC News documentary released Sunday, Steele said he decided to sit down for an interview now because he wanted to "set the record straight" about his role in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. ABC released a portion of the documentary featuring parts of Steele's interview on Sunday, with the full documentary slated to be released on Hulu early Monday morning.

"Most of the world first heard your name about five years ago, but you stayed silent up until now. Why speak out now?" host George Stephanopoulos asked.

"I think the first and most important (reason) is that the problems we identified back in 2016 haven't gone away, and arguably have actually got worse, and I thought it was important to come and set the record straight," Steele said.

Source: NBC News

One person is dead in a shooting early Sunday morning at a Louisiana university, just days after a person was killed in a similar incident on campus.

A shooting occurred in the quad area at Grambling State University, located between Monroe and Shreveport, according to a statement from the school Sunday. One person, who was not an enrolled student, died and “several victims” were involved.

“At the time of the incident, a homecoming event was underway in McCall Dining Center,” the statement said. “All persons present sheltered in place and were released once the all-clear was given by University Police."

Louisiana State Police confirmed its detectives were investigating.

Italy reveals its new national airline

CNN

(CNN) — They've long dominated the food and fashion worlds, this year they've dominated sports, and now they're aiming for the skies.

Italy's new national airline, ITA Airways, launched on Friday with a promise to bring pride back to its national flag carrier, after Alitalia, Italy's legacy airline, went bankrupt and ceased operations a day earlier.

Executives unveiled plans for the new network, airplanes, staffing and livery at a press conference livestreamed from Rome.

The first thing to know: everything will be centopercento italiano.

The new ITA Airways planes will be colored sky-blue, with staff wearing uniforms by top Italian designers.

David Amess: MP's killing declared a terrorist incident

Source: The Guardian

The killing of the Conservative MP David Amess, who died after being stabbed several times at an open advice surgery for his constituents in Essex, has been declared as a terrorist incident.

The death of the 69-year-old veteran backbencher brought heartfelt tributes from all parties. Just five years after the murder of Jo Cox, it also prompted renewed worries about the security risks for MPs in an increasingly rancorous and polarised political era.

A 25-year-old man, believed to be a Briton with Somali heritage, is in custody and has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Sources have told the Guardian he has the same details as someone who had previously been referred to the Prevent scheme, the official programme for those thought at risk of radicalisation.

In a statement, the Metropolitan police said the senior national coordinator for counter-terrorism policing, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon, had formally declared the incident as terrorism. The early investigation has revealed “a potential motivation linked to Islamist extremism”, the force said.

Eric Adams calls Mayor de Blasio's NYC retiree health care shift a 'bait and switch'

New York Daily News

Democratic mayoral nominee Eric Adams said Friday that he’s “really troubled” by Mayor de Blasio’s plan to shift the vast majority of retired city workers from their current health care plans to another, less expensive option — a policy that has retirees fuming.

Adams, who’s facing long-shot Republican contender Curtis Sliwa and is likely to become the next mayor, said de Blasio’s handling of the issue highlights “why it is so important to have a mayor that was actually a union member.”

“When you start talking about cuts in health care, they’re my cuts,” said Adams at a campaign event in the Bronx. “I know what people are going through, and so we’re going to take a close examination of this because it’s going to traumatize our retirees. Some of the stories I’m hearing about increases in payments, you’re on a fixed income — this is devastating.”

Friday’s backhanded diss of the mayor was not Adams first criticism of de Blasio, a supposed political ally. In recent weeks, Adams has pointed to the rise of quality of life crimes under Hizzoner’s watch and his new policy shift on gifted and talented programs in city schools as just two areas where the two differ in their approaches.

Michael Caine retires from acting...

...or not.

Sir Michael Caine Announces Retirement from Acting After Playing His 'Last Part' in Best Sellers

Michael Caine is taking his final bow.

The two-time Academy Award winner, 88, announced his retirement from acting Friday on the BBC Radio show Kermode and Mayo's Film Review, following what will be his final onscreen appearance in the new film Best Sellers.

"Funnily enough, it has turned out to be what is my last part, really," he explained. "Because I haven't worked for two years, and I have a spine problem, which affects my legs. So, I can't walk very well.

"And I also wrote a book, a couple of books, which were published and were successful. So, I'm now not an actor, I'm a writer, which is lovely because as an actor, you have to get up at half past 6 in the morning and go to the studio. As a writer, you can start writing without leaving the bed," Caine added.

No, Michael Caine Is Not Retiring After ‘Best Sellers’

We have not seen the last of Michael Caine onscreen, after all.

While the legendary actor made waves Friday when an interview surfaced in which he said the recently released comedy-drama “Best Sellers” would be his last film, TheWrap has confirmed with Caine’s representatives that he is not fully retiring.

“Funnily enough, it has turned out to be my last part, really,” Caine said in reference to “Best Sellers” during an interview with Simon Mayo. “Because I haven’t worked for two years and I have a spine problem which affects my legs so I can’t walk very well. And I also wrote a couple of books which were published and were successful, so I’m now not an actor I’m a writer.”

It’s possible Caine was being playful or merely referring to starring roles, however, as he also added, “There’s not exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man who’s 88.”

How Vice President Kamala Harris' appearance on a kids' YouTube special backfired

Los Angeles Times

WASHINGTON — It should have been the safest of political appearances — a group of kids gushing about their love of science and space exploration with Vice President Kamala Harris.
But for Harris, it became a controversy.

The children, it turned out, were paid actors. And the video, filmed on location at the White House and the vice president’s official residence at the Naval Observatory, was promoted on NASA’s YouTube Channel and Harris’ Twitter account last week without making that clear.

The fallout over the video, produced for YouTube’s original programming platform, is the second in recent weeks where a seemingly innocuous appearance by Harris has become modestly troublesome.
