Biden urges swift passage of his coronavirus relief plan, highlighting 'the cost of inaction'

Source: Washington Post

President Biden urged swift passage of his $1.9 billion coronavirus relief plan Friday, arguing during an Oval Office appearance that Americans will be “badly, badly hurt” if Congress does not pass legislation soon.

Biden later headed to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., to visit wounded troops, his first trip to the hospital since taking office. During the visit, he also toured a coronavirus vaccination site and thanked hospital officials for the care they provided to his son Beau during the final days of his battle with brain cancer in 2015.

President Donald Trump was treated at Walter Reed in October after contracting the coronavirus.

"Stop the Steal" Organizer Called for "Execution" of Trump's Foes

Source: Mother Jones

Weeks before the murderous mob of insurrectionists stormed the United States Capitol on January 6 to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s victory, a leader of the so-called Stop the Steal movement stood before a crowd of angry Donald Trump loyalists in California and called for the “execution” of those who had supposedly plotted against Trump. Afterward, he posted video of his demand for blood on YouTube.

On December 12, Trump supporters, ahead of the official counting of electoral votes, staged protests across the country, with the main demonstration in Washington leading to violence, as the Proud Boys rampaged through the district and clashed with Antifa activists. A smaller gathering occurred in Huntington Beach, California. One hundred or so Trump devotees, some waving Trump and “Fuck Biden” flags, assembled at the town’s picturesque pier. The man leading that protest was Alan Hostetter, a police-chief-turned-yoga-instructor who last year became a prominent opponent of COVID shutdowns in the Golden State.

“There must be long prison terms, while execution is the just punishment for the ringleaders of this coup.”
Hostetter, who heads a group called the American Phoenix Project, praised the Trumpers, “as America from the ground-up fights back agains this communist takeover of our country.” Reading from a prepared text, he declared, “Both foreign and domestic enemies and traitors surround us. They are protected and enabled by a corrupt and evil…mainstream media. And this mainstream media joined forces with an even more corrupt group of tech tyrants in the Silicon Valley.”

As the demonstrators cheered, he said, “President Trump and his ground troops here with the patriots—we’re going to fix this….There must, absolutely must be a reckoning. There must be justice. President Trump must be inaugurated on January 20.”

NY judge orders Trump Organization's tax firm to hand over more documents to state attorney general

Source: CNN

(CNN)A New York state judge on Friday ordered a tax firm that has worked with former President Donald Trump to turn over more documents to New York Attorney General Letitia James as part of her office's investigation into the Trump Organization.

The supplemental order is one of several that Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron has made in the past month requesting that the tax firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius turn over documents that James's office has requested as part of its investigation.

The attorney general's office declined to comment. CNN has reached out to the Trump Organization and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius for comment.

The Trump Organization has previously argued that the documents are protected by attorney-client privilege, but in December, Engoron ruled that "some but all" of the documents requested by the attorney general's office were privileged.

Wall Street 'hate' seen driving GameStop trades

Roll Call

A coordinated effort by day traders to drive up the share prices of GameStop Corp. and other troubled companies is being fueled by “hate” of Wall Street insiders that must be addressed, according to the chairman of the House Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship and Capital Markets.

Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., said the purpose of capital markets isn’t to facilitate get-rich-quick schemes or keep Wall Street market players employed. It’s to finance the private sector. Investors should pick stocks based on which companies they think will do well, not because they want to reward or punish market participants.

“In the long term, the stock is going to have a value that reflects the value of the company,” Sherman said in an interview with CQ Roll Call. “So if the stock is selling at a price wildly different from the value of the company, some people may make money on that, but ultimately there are going to be more losers than winners.”

“You shouldn’t buy a stock because you hate somebody else who’s on the other side of the transaction,” he said. “Some of the people buying the stock are doing it as almost a political statement against people who sell short.”

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A Whitehall man has been charged in federal court with breaking a Capitol window during the riots on January 6.

According to documents filed in federal court for the Southern District of Ohio, video shows Troy E. Faulkner jumping up on a ledge and kicking out a window. The incident happened as protesters stormed the building during the certification of electoral votes.

On January 11, the Whitehall Police Department sent a tip to the FBI after seeing video of the incident. Police recognized Faulkner from prior interactions with officers.

According to the complaint: Moreover, on January 11, 2021, a Whitehall Ohio Police Department crime intelligence analyst sent to the FBI a captured public Facebook exchange between FAULKNER and another individual. Pipe bombs found near Capitol on Jan. 6 are believed to have been placed the night before

Source: Washington Post

The two pipe bombs that were discovered on Jan. 6 near the U.S. Capitol shortly before a mob stormed the building are believed to have been planted the night before, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation and video footage obtained by The Washington Post.

The explosive devices, which were placed blocks from one another at the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic national committees, have been largely overshadowed by the violent insurrection at the Capitol. But finding the person suspected of planting both bombs remains a priority for federal authorities, who last week boosted the reward for tips leading to the person’s arrest from $50,000 to $75,000.

The FBI said its agents are “using every tool in our toolbox,” and have interviewed more than 1,000 residents and business owners in the neighborhood where the devices were found. On Friday morning the FBI released additional information that confirmed The Post’s reporting about the timing of the placement of the bombs and raised the reward offered to $100,000.

The Post spoke to local residents, property managers and business owners to obtain exclusive video of the suspect in the moments before he allegedly placed the bomb in an alley behind the Republican National Committee, one block from the Capitol grounds.
