Spinal Tap Funnyman Michael McKean Hit by Car

Source: E! (yeah, I know...)

Michael McKean, star of This Is Spinal Tap and Christopher Guest troupe regular, was struck by a car Tuesday afternoon in Manhattan and was taken to the hospital in critical condition, publicist Harriet Sternberg confirmed to the New York Daily News.

He remains hospitalized, but how what is the 64-year-old actor-writer's prognosis?

McKean's condition was upgraded to stable at the hospital, per his rep, but, in addition to cuts and bruises, he did suffer a broken leg.

"He'll be OK, hopefully he'll be fine," Sternberg said. "It's pretty devastating." She also said that McKean's wife, Smallville star Annette O'Toole, was flying in from Los Angeles to be with him. He also has two children from a previous marriage.

Trivia: What US-built warship was attacked by the Japanese but ultimately sunk by the British?

Answer: The USS Phoenix/ARA General Belgrano. Today is the 30th anniversary of its sinking.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARA_General_Belgrano

The ARA General Belgrano was an Argentine Navy light cruiser in service from 1951 until 1982. Formerly the USS Phoenix (CL-46), she saw action in the Pacific theater of World War II before being sold to Argentina. After almost 31 years of service, she was sunk during the Falklands War (Spanish: Guerra de las Malvinas) by the Royal Navy submarine HMS Conqueror with the loss of 323 lives. Losses from the Belgrano totalled just over half of Argentine deaths in the Falklands War.

She is the only ship ever to have been sunk in anger by a nuclear-powered submarine and the second sunk in action by any type of submarine since World War II, the first being the Indian frigate INS Khukri by the Pakistani Hangor during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.

'Gone through a blender': No signs of distress before yacht race tragedy

http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/04/30/11466954-gone-through-a-blender-no-signs-of-distress-before-yacht-race-tragedy?lite?ocid=twitter

ENSENADA, Mexico - Eric Lamb was doing safety patrol on a 124-mile yacht race when he spotted a boat that appeared too close to Mexico's Coronado Islands. He never got there.

As his twin-engine boat neared the uninhabited islands just south of San Diego, he stumbled on sailboat shards that were mostly no more than six inches long strewn over about two square miles. He saw a small refrigerator, a white seat cushion and empty containers of yogurt and soy milk.

Over several hours, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter directed him in his search and led him to two dead bodies floating with their backs up, badly scraped and bruised. The Coast Guard recovered a third body and the fourth member of the crew was missing early Monday in California's second deadly accident this month involving an ocean race.

Lamb, 62, said the 37-foot yacht looked like it "had gone through a blender."

"It was real obvious it had been hit just because the debris was so small," he said Sunday.

Police concerned about order to stop screening
By JACK DOUGLAS Jr.
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Police were told to stop screening people for weapons before the rally began.

DALLAS -- Security details at Barack Obama's rally Wednesday stopped screening people for weapons at the front gates more than an hour before the Democratic presidential candidate took the stage at Reunion Arena.

The order to put down the metal detectors and stop checking purses and laptop bags came as a surprise to several Dallas police officers who said they believed it was a lapse in security...

Several Dallas police officers said it worried them that the arena was packed with people who got in without even a cursory inspection.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because, they said, the order was made by federal officials who were in charge of security at the event...

Two men have been arrested in the Friday morning shootings that left three dead and two injured in north Tulsa, the Tulsa Police Department announced in a press release early Sunday.

Jake England, 19, and Alvin Watts, 32, were arrested at 1:47 a.m., almost exactly 48 hours after a series of shootings left three people dead and two hospitalized.

More details about the suspects were not immediately available.

Police indicated they would be charged with three counts of murder and two counts of shooting with intent to kill.

The victims were identified as Dannaer Fields, 49, Bobby Clark, 54 and William Allen, 31. They died in north Tulsa early Friday after being shot in separate incidents. Two others were shot and have been hospitalized.

Military Board Says Marine Who Criticized President Obama Should Be Dismissed

Source: NYT

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (AP) — A Marine who criticized President Barack Obama on his Facebook page has committed misconduct and should be dismissed, a military board recommended late Thursday.

The Marine Corps administrative board made the decision after a daylong hearing at Camp Pendleton for Sgt. Gary Stein.

The board also recommended that Stein be given an other-then-honorable discharge. That would mean Stein would lose his benefits and would not be allowed on any military base.

The board's recommendations go to a general who will either accept or deny them. If the general disagrees with the board, the case could go to the secretary of the Navy.

Stein's lawyers argued that the 9-year Marine, whose service was to end in four months, was expressing his personal views and exercising his First Amendment rights.

"We're truly surprised and disappointed but it was an honor to fight for a hero like Sgt. Stein and every other Marine's right to speak freely," Stein's defense attorney Marine Capt. Jame Baehr said."

Ferdinand Porsche, sports car designer, dies

Source: MSNBC.com

By The Associated Press

FRANKFURT, Germany — He designed Porsche's classic 911 sports car — the sleek model that evokes power, wealth and envy among aficionados — cementing his grandfather's name into the modern psyche

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche died Thursday in Salzburg, Austria at age 76, Porsche AG said. No cause was provided.

Porsche, known as F.A. to his colleagues, was head of the Porsche design studio in the early 1960s when the company developed the 911 model that remains its brand-defining product. The car, now in its seventh version, remains recognizably the same vehicle, with its sloping roofline, long, low hood and prominent headlights.

"The creator of the Porsche 911 has founded a culture of design in our company that distinguishes our sports cars even today," Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller said.

Porsche was the son of former Porsche Chairman Ferry Porsche, who died in 1998, and the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, who started the company as a design and engineering firm in the 1930s.

Jim Marshall, guitar amp maker and "Father of the Loud" dead at 88

http://www.metalhammer.co.uk/news/jim-marshall-founder-of-marshall-amps-passes-away-aged-88/

Marshall Amps have today announced that founder and legendary innovator Jim Marshall has passed away aged 88. Metal Hammer would like to join the music industry, artists and fans around the world in paying tribute to a man that truly helped shaped our world and was a defining influence on music itself over the past 50 years.

The Marshall website has released the following statement:

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved founder and leader for the past 50 years, Jim Marshall. While mourning the Guv’nor though, we also salute a legendary man who led a full and truly remarkable life.

Jim’s ascent into the history books as ‘the Father of Loud’ and the man responsible for ‘the Sound of Rock’ is a true rags-to-riches tale. Cruelly robbed of his youth by tubercular bones, Jim rose to become one of the four forefathers responsible for creating the tools that allowed rock guitar as we know and love it today to be born. The ground breaking quartet also includes the late, great trio of Leo Fender, Les Paul and Seth Lover – together with Jim, they truly are the cornerstones of all things rock.

In addition to the creation of the amps chosen by countless guitar heroes and game changing bands, Jim was also an incredibly humble and generous man who, over the past several decades, has quietly donated many millions of pounds to worthy causes

Cross gently, Jim and THANK YOU for those incredible amps!!!
