Alexander Cockburn, 1941-2012 - Farewell, Alex, My Friend

Source: Coutnerpunch

by JEFFREY ST. CLAIR

Our friend and comrade Alexander Cockburn died last night in Germany, after a fierce two-year long battle against cancer. His daughter Daisy was at his bedside.

Alex kept his illness a tightly guarded secret. Only a handful of us knew how terribly sick he truly was. He didn’t want the disease to define him. He didn’t want his friends and readers to shower him with sympathy. He didn’t want to blog his own death as Christopher Hitchens had done. Alex wanted to keep living his life right to the end. He wanted to live on his terms. And he wanted to continue writing through it all, just as his brilliant father, the novelist and journalist Claud Cockburn had done. And so he did. His body was deteriorating, but his prose remained as sharp, lucid and deadly as ever.

In one of Alex’s last emails to me, he patted himself on the back (and deservedly so) for having only missed one column through his incredibly debilitating and painful last few months. Amid the chemo and blood transfusions and painkillers, Alex turned out not only columns for CounterPunch and The Nation and First Post, but he also wrote a small book called Guillotine and finished his memoirs, A Colossal Wreck, both of which CounterPunch plans to publish over the course of the next year.

Alex lived a huge life and he lived it his way. He hated compromise in politics and he didn’t tolerate it in his own life. Alex was my pal, my mentor, my comrade. We joked, gossiped, argued and worked together nearly every day for the last twenty years. He leaves a huge void in our lives. But he taught at least two generations how to think, how to look at the world, how to live a life of resistance. So, the struggle continues and we’re going to remain engaged. He wouldn’t have it any other way.

Note to mods, I know Counterpunch isn't "mainstream" but Cockburn & St Clair were important voices during the last decade.

Cross gently Alex, and thank you so much for bringing truth to light.

Are images of Batman appropriate in Colorado shooting tribute graphics?

Apparently, the gunman was quite taken with the Batman story - to the point of emulating The Joker by dying his hair bright red before the shooting. Also, what if the victims were viewing a movie like Ernest Goes to Camp? Would there be a graphic of a sad Ernest? Not to mention; would the Ernest story entice someone to shoot up a theater? (Well, maybe after the movie...

I'm not necessarily bothered by the graphics, but I wonder what others think about it...

NEW YORK — Being the kind of grandfather that he is, New York Yankees legend Don Larsen is taking one for the team.

The former pitcher announced Thursday that he’s paying for his grandchildren’s college education by auctioning off his most prized possession — the baseball uniform he wore when he pitched the only perfect game in World Series history.

Steiner Sports Memorabilia will conduct the auction beginning Oct. 8, the 56th anniversary of Larsen’s masterful pitching performance against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1956 World Series. Baseball enthusiasts worldwide will have the opportunity to place bids online or via phone for 56 days afterward.

The off-white uniform with faded Yankee pinstripes is in excellent condition, Larsen said.

When asked how much he’d like to get for the uniform — which includes both the jersey and pants — Larsen, 82, didn’t miss a beat.

“A million,” he said. “Why go cheap?”

What a GREAT Grandfather! Damn shame he has to auction his uniform, though...

Syrian military says it downed Turkish fighter jet

Source: The Beeb

The Syrian military has said it shot down a Turkish plane "flying in airspace over Syrian waters", according to state-run news agency Sana.

The F-4 Phantom disappeared over the Mediterranean, south-west of Hatay province, near the Syrian coast.

Turkey had earlier said it believed that one of its F-4 fighter jets had been shot down by Syrian forces.

A search for the two crew members is under way involving Turkish and Syrian coast guard ships.

School bus monitor bullied by students -disturbing video

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20120620/NEWS01/306200023/Greece-bus-monitor-bullying-video?odyssey=tab%7Ctopnews%7Ctext%7CLocal%20News

An online fundraising effort to assist a Greece bus monitor verbally abused by students raised more than $70,000 in its first day.

The effort was set in motion by a video of 10 minutes of profane taunting endured on Monday by bus monitor Karen Klein.

Klein didn’t report the behavior and said she figured she had just ended the year on a bad note.

But one of the kids on the Greece Athena Middle School bus captured the incident on a cellphone camera. The video got pulled off of Facebook late Tuesday and was posted to YouTube. By early Wednesday, it had gone viral across the world.

In the video, Klein does her best to ignore the harassment.

“I was trying to just ignore them, hoping they would go away and it doesn’t work,” Klein said. “Trust me, they didn’t go away.”

The vile chorus included profanity, taunts, insults, jeers, physical ridicule and outright threats to Klein’s person and home.
