Pope Slams Unfettered Capitalism: 'A New Tyranny' - Reuters/HuffPo

Pope Francis 'Evangelii Gaudium' Calls For Renewal Of Roman Catholic Church, Attacks 'Idolatry Of Money'

(Reuters) - Pope Francis called for renewal of the Roman Catholic Church and attacked unfettered capitalism as "a new tyranny", urging global leaders to fight poverty and growing inequality in the first major work he has authored alone as pontiff.

The 84-page document, known as an apostolic exhortation, amounted to an official platform for his papacy, building on views he has aired in sermons and remarks since he became the first non-European pontiff in 1,300 years in March.

In it, Francis went further than previous comments criticizing the global economic system, attacking the "idolatry of money" and beseeching politicians to guarantee all citizens "dignified work, education and healthcare".

He also called on rich people to share their wealth. "Just as the commandment 'Thou shalt not kill' sets a clear limit in order to safeguard the value of human life, today we also have to say 'thou shalt not' to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills," Francis wrote in the document issued on Tuesday.

"How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses 2 points?"

FDL Movie Night: The Garrison Tapes Exploring the JFK Assassination with John Barbour - FDL

FDL Movie Night: The Garrison Tapes — Exploring the JFK Assassination with John Barbour

John Barbour has led a storied life in show business as a writer and producer, and as creator of the first reality TV show Real People; he is the only person to win an Emmy for both entertainment and news, and was critic-at-large for KNBC in Los Angeles. Barbour also became close friends with Jim Garrison, the New Orleans District attorney who brought businessman Clay Shaw to trial for conspiracy in the killing of John Kennedy, and was instrumental in sounding the alarm that a conspiracy was involved in the President’s murder. In 1980 at the height of his career with Real People, Barbour interviewed Garrison for NBC news, the interview was re-edited without Barbour’s knowledge or permission making Garrison look foolish and unbalanced.

Twelve years later, Barbour was able to gain control of the raw footage and make The Garrison Tapes, an award-winning documentary that traces Garrison’s on the trail of the assassins, his investigation into the conspiracy to kill John F. Kennedy, and the trial of Clay Shaw, who Garrison felt was involved.

The vast majority of Americans believe that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone, and Oswald himself said to reporters at the time of his arrest:

I’m just a patsy.

But a patsy for whom? My co-host JP Sotille and I will be discussing the various theories tonight with John Barbour, as well as going into Barbour’s amazing career (he’s a no BS guy with an amazing sense of humor), and the life of Jim Garrison.

Here’s Garrison in 1967, responding to the NBC program that was highly critical of Garrison’s pursuit of alleged Kennedy assassination conspirators in New Orleans.

I'm Not Waiting Til June... I'm Reposting This NOW... In Response To THIS... Found On DU...

That would be RFK Jr, the zealous spokesman for the "vaccines cause autism" claque,

the guy whose Salon & Rolling Stone articles averring there was US government conspiracy to cover up data linking vaccines to autism were retracted by those publishers for gross factual errors, the guy who kept a diary of his sexual exploits during his second marriage, and which diary contributed to his second wife, Mary, committing suicide by hanging during their contentious divorce proceedings, correct? That RFK Jr?

Witnesses are successfully impeached in our nation's courts every day of the week as being unreliable on much slimmer evidence than that which surrounds Jr...and I didn't even mention his arrest for heroin possession.

I'll take the words of his father over Jr's word any day of the week, especially as Jr was only 14 years old at the time of his father's murder and who didn't possess the maturity to interpret anything his father said to him about JFK's murder, and who is even less of a position to interpret those things 46 years after the fact.

Here's my response...

And, If I May, A Word Or Two About David Kennedy, RFK's Fourth Son...

David Anthony Kennedy died of a drug overdose in 1984, and has been kicked around ever since by the right-wing fascists who pull his name out of their ass anytime they feel the need to take the Kennedy family down a peg or two. But unlike the partying the current frat-boy in the White House was used to, David self-medicated to relieve himself of terrible personal pain. At least that's what I believe.

I met David back in the late 70's\early 80's at a local watering hole. My sister, who worked with him, introduced us. And although I may have been a back slapping, coke snorting, skirt chasing BMOC back then, David certainly was not. He was soft spoken, gentle, and would only smile, never laugh. He had the look of someone much older than he was. He liked to sit back and observe the comings and goings of others, and none of us EVER spoke the thousands of questions we had for him about his family. So it was with some shock and chagrin that I learned of David's story while reading a book on his father in the 1990s. Many people only know the second half of the story.

Early on the day of (or day before) his father's death, David and some of the other kids were down swimming at one of the beaches in the LA area. At some point David got caught in a rip-tide and started panicking a bit. When others noticed him struggling to get back to shore, his dad ran into the surf, swam after him, calmed him down, and showed him how to get back to shore. IOW - Bobby saved his son's life that day. And when you are 12, and your dad might be the next president, and he saves your life... well RFK's hero status with David must have gone up in orders of magnitude that day.

So it was with major sorrow that somebody from the campaign, or family (I can't remember which), found David the night of the assassination. With Bobby and Ethel downstairs thanking the crowd for their support, and congratulating everyone involved for an impressive victory in California, the kids were scattered in various rooms about the hotel. David was by himself, sitting on the edge of the bed, watching TV. He watched the results by himself, he watched the victory speech by himself, and he watched the man who had just saved his life, get gunned down right there in front of him , on the TV, in the very same hotel... all by himself.

When somebody finally realized, after ambulance rides, reporters calls, and a national freak out, that nobody had seen David, they went looking for him. They found him, still sitting on the edge of that bed, never having moved, eyes still transfixed on the TV set, in total shock. He was almost delirious, and somebody had the good sense to wrap him in a blanket, and have him checked by medical personnel. His 13th birthday would be nine days later. That Christmas he wrote,

"There will be no more football with Daddy, no more swimming with him, no more riding and no more camping with him. But he was the best father there ever was and I would rather have him for a father for the length of time I did than any other father for a million years."

RIP to you too David

Peace to us all...

So... The Majority Here At DU Think It Was A Conspiracy, As Do A Majority Of Americans...

And although I realize that might not mean much to some...

How come the minority ia so sensitive... and so vocal ???

The Congress Believed It Was A Conspricay...

Although the Commission's conclusions were initially supported by a majority of the American public,[3] polls conducted between 1966 and 2003 found that as many as 80 percent of Americans have suspected that there was a plot or cover-up.[4][5] A 1998 CBS News poll showed that 76% of Americans believed Kennedy had been killed as the result of a conspiracy.[6] A 2013 AP poll showed, that although the percentage had fallen, more than 59% of those polled still believed that more than one person was involved in the President's murder.[7][8] A Gallup Poll in mid-November 2013 showed 61% believed in a conspiracy and 30% thought Oswald did it alone.[9]

In contrast to the conclusions of the Warren Commission, the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) concluded in 1978 that Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy.[10] The HSCA found the original FBI investigation and the Warren Commission Report to be seriously flawed. While agreeing with the Commission that Oswald fired all the shots which caused the wounds to Kennedy and Connally, the HSCA stated that there were at least four shots fired (only three of which could be linked to Oswald) and that there was "...a high probability that two gunmen fired at [the] President."

The Reason So Many Of Us Question The JFK/Warren Commission/Conspiracy/Etc....

Is our desire not only to know where we live in this country, and how we live in this country, but WHY we live in this country.

Somebody Here, On This Site, Actually Asked..

It's history... and we should just move forward.
