What’s worse? That Rep. Duncan D. Hunter, R-Alpine, is running an anti-Muslim campaign against his 50th district foe? That he’s running it against a longtime Christian? That he denies running it at all? Or that he is doing it while he and his wife face a 60-count indictment that reads like a Shakespearean saga about spending more than $250,000 in campaign funds illegally over years while deciding to buy Hawaii shorts and describe the purchase as golf balls for Wounded Warriors and telling the Navy to “go f--- themselves” because it wouldn’t help him justify a $14,000 family vacation to Italy?
It’s beyond contemptible that Hunter, a Republican, is clinging to bigotry to retain his congressional seat while facing a strong challenge from Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar. Hunter has lost his way.
Hunter has suggested his opponent is a “radical Muslim” working “to infiltrate Congress.” He’s run a despicable ad calling his opponent a “security threat” and released a more despicable “security alert” from three retired generals turned lobbyists. Tuesday, Hunter even let his father, former Rep. Duncan L. Hunter, attack Campa-Najjar’s lineage and say the attacks have to do with terrorism, not racism. Please. Campa-Najjar has disavowed the actions of a grandfather he never knew and is distanced from a father he barely knows. He’s his own man. Unlike Hunter, who needs his father’s help.

Hurricane ripped one of Florida's most reliable GOP regions, adding to election uncertainty
With Election Day less than three weeks away, Hurricane Michael has upended life in one of Florida’s most reliable Republican voting regions, adding another level of uncertainty to races that were already toss-ups, for governor and U.S. Senate.
Elections officials have asked Gov. Rick Scott to issue an executive order, authorizing them to take steps to make voting easier heading toward the Nov. 6 election.
But even that may not inspire the almost 220,000 voters across an eight-county swath of North Florida, who are dealing with wrecked homes, massive power outages and likely job losses.
“None of us are even thinking about an election at this point,” said Mert Stephens, a Blountstown city councilwoman in hard-hit Calhoun County, where 98 percent of homes and businesses remained without power Wednesday.

Former Rep. Duncan Hunter goes to bat for his indicted son in bitter congressional re-election bid

The race for the 50th Congressional District is spanning multiple generations, as former Congressman Duncan L. Hunter held a news conference Tuesday attacking his son’s Democratic opponent as a security risk — and also attacking the opponent’s father and grandfather.
The rival, Ammar Campa-Najjar, showed up at Hunter’s news conference by the USS Midway Museum and told reporters that it’s incumbent Rep. Duncan D. Hunter who would have trouble passing a security screening, given that he’s under federal indictment.
Campa-Najjar, 29, of Jamul and Duncan D. Hunter, 41, of Alpine, are competing to represent a district that includes El Cajon, Escondido, much of rural San Diego County and parts of Riverside County.
Hunter’s high-profile indictment on 60 counts of misspending $250,000 of campaign funds featured prominently in August and September, but Hunter’s attacks on Campa-Najjar’s Palestinian lineage have taken center stage this month, facing widespread criticism that the attacks are racist.

A once-Republican stronghold is slipping away from the GOP, Harkey
Diane Harkey made a remarkable statement last week, just one month before Election Day. National Republican leaders, she said, are giving up on her.
Keep in mind, Harkey is running in one of several California GOP-held congressional districts that may determine who controls the House of Representatives. Her comment came as she sought to rally hundreds of people at an Oct. 8 meeting of the Republican Party of San Diego County.
“I want you to say that we are going to hold the 49th!” she said, prepping the crowd for a cheer. “I want you to say it so loud that they hear us in D.C. Are we going to hold the 49th?” “Yes!” the audience shouted.
“OK,” she continued, “we need them to hear that in D.C. because a lot of people are giving up on us. We are not giving up on the 49th.”

DNA Test Reveals Donald Trump, Jr., Is Fifty Per Cent Idiot
NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report)—Donald Trump, Jr., has taken a DNA test that reveals that he is “fifty-per-cent idiot,” Trump confirmed on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Trump Tower, Trump said that he had undergone the DNA testing “to silence all of the haters who have been saying I’m a total idiot.” Crowing about the test results, Trump said, “According to this test, I am fifty-per-cent idiot, which is way less than half.”
Trump’s results drew a skeptical response from the scientific community, with many leading geneticists questioning the integrity of his DNA sample. According to Davis Logsdon, a genetic scientist at the University of Minnesota, “Any test of Don, Jr., that comes back lower than ninety-per-cent idiot is going to set off alarm bells, scientifically speaking.”
Trump, Jr., first boasted about his test results on Twitter, where he misspelled “DNA.”

Man shot in Panama City amid looting in aftermath of Hurricane Michael: report
A man was shot while trying to steal a police officer’s squad car Thursday night in Panama City, according to a report by ABC 3 WEAR TV, an ABC affiliated news station serving Pensacola.
A witness told WEAR that he saw a man entering the squad car and yelling, “I’m looting.” State fire marshals attempted to get the man out of the vehicle, according to WEAR. The witness told the news outlet that he turned to go back inside his home, which is when he heard shots fired.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, according to WEAR.
Power lines remain down in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, which is believed to be why looting has become rampant in Panama City, WEAR reported. WEAR reporters said they saw a multiple people robbing a convenience store after the door had been smashed.

Jim Taylor, hard-running Hall of Fame fullback for Green Bay Packers, dies at 83

Jim Taylor, the ferocious Hall of Fame fullback who embodied the Green Bay Packers’ unstoppable ground game during the Vince Lombardi era and helped the team win four NFL titles and the first Super Bowl, died Oct. 13 at a hospital in his hometown of Baton Rouge. He was 83.
The team confirmed the death. The cause was not immediately known.
Mr. Taylor played during the great Packer dynasty and was the NFL’s Most Valuable Player in 1962. He scored the first rushing touchdown in Super Bowl history.
“He was a gritty, classic player on the Lombardi teams and a key figure of those great championship runs,” Packers President Mark Murphy said.

Federal election officials question Rep. Duncan Hunter campaign's identification of donors
This past March, James H. Hunter of Eagle, Idaho, made two $2,700 contributions to the campaign to re-elect his nephew, Rep. Duncan D. Hunter, R-Alpine.
Hunter’s campaign reported the contributions on a financial disclosure report to the Federal Election Commission, but claimed it did not know — and was unable to find out — his uncle’s employer or occupation.
The Federal Election Commission sent a letter to Hunter’s campaign treasurer this week informing him that “information requested per best efforts” is not an acceptable answer to the question of a contributor’s occupation or employer — information that was missing not just for Hunter’s uncle on Hunter’s campaign forms.
James H. Hunter and his wife, Jan, are the founders of Boise Hunter Homes, a development company they have headed for more than a decade, according to the company’s website and business filings. James H. Hunter is among more than 90 donors for whom Hunter’s campaign has reported employer and occupation as “information requested per best efforts” since 2007, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune’s review of FEC records. Their contributions totaled more than $67,000.

Congress heads toward postelection fight over border wall

Congress is heading toward a postelection showdown over President Donald Trump’s wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, as GOP leaders signal they’re willing to engage in hardball tactics that could spark a partial government shutdown and the president revs up midterm crowds for the wall, a centerpiece of his 2016 campaign and a top White House priority.
Trump is promising voters at rallies across the country that Republicans will bring tougher border security in campaign speeches that echo those that propelled him to office two years ago. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., promised a “big fight” over the border wall money and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has not ruled out a mini-shutdown as GOP leaders look to help Trump “get what he’s looking for” on the wall.
“Democrats want to abolish America’s borders and allow drugs and gangs to pour into our country,” Trump said without evidence Wednesday during a swing through Erie, Pa.
“Right after the election we’re doing something very strong on the wall,” Trump added Thursday in an interview on “Fox & Friends.”

Lindsey Buckingham sues Fleetwood Mac after blaming Stevie Nicks for getting him fired
Lindsey Buckingham is suing his former Fleetwood Mac bandmates for breach of contract for going on tour without him. And he’s also blaming Stevie Nicks for getting him booted from the iconic rock group.
Buckingham and Nicks, who joined Fleetwood Mac as a couple in 1975, have a complicated history, on and off stage. Their latest disagreement played out in a new Rolling Stone story published Wednesday. Buckingham claimed Nicks gave the band an ultimatum: Either he goes or she does.
Then, on Thursday, Buckingham sued Fleetwood Mac for breach of contract, according to RadarOnline, after the group “secretly, and unceremoniously, moved on without him” ahead of its North American tour. Buckingham asked to postpone that tour so he could promote his solo projects.
“It’s impossible for the band to offer comment on a legal complaint they have not seen,” a spokesperson for Fleetwood Mac told The Times on Thursday. “It’s fairly standard legal procedure to service the complaint to the parties involved, something that neither Mr. Buckingham nor his legal counsel have done.
