Lin’s journey has been an interesting one, and what he has accomplished so far is nothing short of remarkable. After going undrafted out of Harvard, Lin signed on with his hometown Golden State Warriors, where he played sparingly in a reserve role last season.
The Warriors waived him Dec. 9, and the Houston Rockets quickly scooped him up, but the Rockets let him go before the season even started.
The Knicks grabbed him off waivers Dec. 27, but after struggling to find a place for Lin in the rotation, the Knicks sent him down to the D-League (the NBA's Developmental league - the minor leagues). In his only game with the Erie BayHawks, Lin posted a triple-double, scoring 28 points to go with 12 assists and 11 rebounds — certainly enough to warrant a recall to the NBA, but not yet enough to get him into the lineup.
“The journey was very different,” Lin said. “Getting waived twice, going to the D-League four times, just fighting for a spot in any rotation, and being basically a 15th guy on a roster, that’s tough at times.”

NBA analyst Ric Bucher tweeted that Lin, a devout Christian, is the NBA's counterpart to "Tebowmania."
It's helped too that the Knicks, with bloated salaries and egos, had been struggling and searching for someone to pull all the talent together. No better person than Lin, 23, who for the past six weeks has been sleeping in his brother Josh's living room while his non-guaranteed contract - reportedly less than $800,000 - got worked out.

105 year old still volunteering at a hospital
Dorrie Aber Noyek briskly maneuvers the halls of Memorial Regional Hospital picking up and delivering mail. There are no signs of slowing down — not even on this, her 105th birthday.
“Volunteering has been important to me as long as I can remember. I feel I want to give back," she said. "I think I’m very fortunate, very lucky, very blessed."
“From when I was quite young, all my life in England, anyway, we never had a car, not at all. And I’ve always walked. I’ve always walked miles.”
“When people hear how old she is they’re shocked, because nobody has seen a person of that age who is able to get around the way she does and who has the mental abilities she has. She lives completely on her own in a regular condo,” Steinhauer said.
“Not too much fat, too much sweets," she said. "Although to this day I eat cookies every day.” Her favorite kind is chocolate chip.

CPAC welcomes white nationalists
Three noted white supremacy enthusiasts to host anti-diversity panel at conservative conference
But! While the Birchers and the open homosexualists are no longer welcome, there is still room for multiple outspoken white nationalists!
The National Review’s John Derbyshire, a stock “pervert Tory” character from a Martin Amis novel sprung to life and given a sinecure at the National Review, is hosting a panel on “multiculturalism” (boo hiss) featuring two of America’s most detestable sacks of shit: Peter Brimelow, founder of white supremacist site VDARE, and Robert Vandervoort, the director of some sort of “don’t make me press one for English” nativist group and a white nationalist from way back.
CPAC organizers are like, we didn’t specifically organize this panel ourselves so whatever, but they are not canceling the panel, because the conservative movement has always quietly set a place at the table for their white supremacist allies when they get together for Thanksgiving. And after everyone says grace (and sings “God Bless America” and the national anthem and does the Pledge of Allegiance) comes the ceremonial declaration that liberals are the real racists, for inventing welfare.
The Derbyshire, Brimelow, and Vandervoort (these names!) panel is called “The Failure of Multiculturalism: How the Pursuit of Diversity Is Weakening the American Identity,” and the fact that these panelists are all well-compensated members in good standing of the conservative movement instead of shrieking their “defense of Western Civilization” nonsense for free from a bench outside a subway station does suggest that something has gone wrong with the American experiment. (I think we let too many racist British people enter the country and steal our right-wing think tank and magazine contributor jobs, personally.)

Future of State Fair of Virginia in question
The State Fair of Virginia has until March 7 to either come up with new financing to maintain operations for a year or submit a way to keep The Meadow Event Park.
If it fails to meet the deadline, a group of lenders could take over operations, including the 360-acre entertainment and meeting complex in Caroline County, and possibly shut down the fair, which has been operating since 1854, according to documents filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond.
SFVA Inc., the corporation running the fair that filed for bankruptcy protection Dec. 1, and its lenders agreed to the deadline, which could determine its future.
SFVA got into financial trouble because its investment portfolio took a big hit in the stock market's plunge in 2009 and because of poor attendance at the fair in 2009 and 2010, according to documents filed in December.

'Tebow’ bill to let home-schoolers play high school sports passes Va. House
The House of Delegates voted 59 to 39 Wednesday in favor of a bill that would allow Virginia’s tens of thousands of home-schooled students to play sports at their local high schools.
Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R), has said he will sign the bill. “Home-school parents pay taxes like everybody else,” he said
The bill bans public schools from partnering with the Virginia High School League (DU addition - the VHSL opposes the bill) — which governs high school activites in the state — because it forbids home-schoolers from playing sports or being involved in other programs such as drama, debate and yearbook. It only pertains to high schools, because children in lower grades are often able to play at their local public schools.
The change would sunset in 2017, and supporters would have to return to the state to reevaluate the situation after four years.

Newt Gingrich drops quest for Virginia ballot
Former House speaker Newt Gingrich has dropped his legal quest for a slot on the Republican presidential primary ballot in Virginia next month.
On Saturday, lawyers for Gingrich filed paperwork giving up the fight with a federal district court in Virginia. They confirmed the decision on Monday afternoon in a filing with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
In the filings, Gingrich gave no explanation for throwing the in the towel on the legal battle for a spot on the March 6 ballot. However, recent rulings in the dispute have not gone his way. On Jan 13, U.S. District Court Judge John Gibney ruled that Gingrich and three other candidates who failed to make the ballot: John Huntsman, Rick Perry, and Rick Santorum, waited too long to challenge Virginia's procedures. Gibney said a Virginia requirement limiting petition circulators to residents of the state was probably unconstitutional, but there was not enough time to sort that out before the election. On Jan. 18, a three-judge panel of the appeals court upheld the thrust of the lower court's ruling.
Gingrich could have sought to have the appeals court's decision reviewed by the full bench of that court, or he could have asked the Supreme Court to step in. (Chief Justice John Roberts is assigned to handle emergency applications from the Fourth Circuit.) A lawyer for Gingrich did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment for this post.

Payroll tax cut splinters GOP
It’s a dilemma that’s splitting the party and threatening to give leadership another bout of migraines.
But the split in strategy could have repercussions beyond the likelihood of another Capitol Hill drama in the heat of campaign season. It has senior Republicans on the Hill more pessimistic about the prospect of an agreement — especially as a House-Senate conference committee struggles to bridge the partisan divide.
Failure would play directly into Obama’s campaign theme of an inept Congress and an opposition party unwilling to cut taxes for middle-class Americans who need relief the most.
“I think the election needs to be about President Obama, his policies and his economy and his enablers, obviously,” said Texas Sen. John Cornyn, a member of Republican leadership who in December opposed the Senate GOP’s yearlong tax cut extensions. “He’s going to try to make it about Congress — so I’m for removing any distraction that we can and keeping the focus on his economy and his policies and his enablers.”

John Fleming (R- obviously - La.) links to Onion story on Facebook -
Rep. John Fleming (R-La.) has deleted his Facebook post linking to an article in The Onion about a fictional Planned Parenthood “Abortionplex.”
In a Facebook status on Friday, Fleming alerted his followers to The Onion’s May 18, 2011 article, “Planned Parenthood Opens $8 Billion Abortionplex” and wrote “More on Planned Parenthood, abortion by the wholesale.” Fleming’s spokesman Doug Sachtleben confirmed to POLITICO the post has since been removed from the congressman’s Facebook page and said the office had no further comment.
The blog Literally Unbelievable — which posts Facebook statuses from users who think Onion articles are real — picked up Fleming’s status before the congressman removed it from the social networking site. Four users liked the post and eight left comments, with one person writing, “The Onion is satire. How exactly did you get elected?”
The May 2011 Onion article details the opening of a “sprawling abortion facility that will allow the organization to terminate unborn lives with an efficiency never before thought possible.” The fictional Abortionplex includes more than 2,000 rooms dedicated to the procedure, as well as “coffee shops, bars, dozens of restaurants and retail outlets, a three-story nightclub, and a 10-screen multiplex theater — features intended not only to help clients relax, but to foster a sense of community and make abortion more of a social event.”

RW radio hack (Beck fill -in ) loses two jobs in 8 days... while on his honeymoon
Doc Thompson, let go at WLW Cincinnati, is also out at WRVA Richmond
As the Cincinnati Enquirer’s John Kiesewetter observes, talk personality Doc Thompson "lost both his radio jobs in eight days.” First came the phone call while Thompson was on his honeymoon, saying he was off his 9am-noon shift on "Big One" WLW, Cincinnati (700). Now here is Thompson's Friday evening (Feb. 3) posting on Facebook: “I am no longer hosting my Richmond show. In the world of radio broadcasting…sometimes these things happen.” Thompson had been doing 3-6pm for Richmond talker WRVA (1140) when he got the opportunity at WLW, so he moved, but continued doing his WRVA show out of the Queen City. His girlfriend followed him, and she recently landed a job at a Dayton TV station. They recently bought a house together.
