What's up with those tax returns?

And why, at this stage of the game, do you "still have to do a few little things to check 'em out"?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:

3. It would be so simple for him to end the speculation, and the questions.

Just release them.

Being defensive certainly doesn't put a stop to journalists asking the question.

He can definitely afford an accountant, so two years would have been more enough time to have this done, especially if he anticipated another run for POTUS in 2020.

Trumps concealed taxes have gotten far more scrutiny than Sanders. That includes in 2016. Time for Sanders to step to the plate.

37. Yeah I did

Not ALL of these are critical of him in fact the top post...

Read the first one in your link for CNN, not really scathing is it?

Some context here: Trump is the only modern president -- since Richard Nixon -- to not release any of his income tax returns. He was also the first major party presidential nominee since Watergate not to do so. The excuses he has provided for his lack of transparency have varied -- from claiming he is under an ongoing audit to insisting that tax returns reveal little about a person's finances. (Tax returns provide the fullest picture of someone's financial well being -- or lack thereof. And simply being under audit does not preclude an individual from releasing returns.)

List some truth and facts and then site more facts....

This is a fight that has been simmering, slowly, since the day Democrats took over the House majority last November. Under a little-known law passed in the 1920s, the chairman of the House Ways and Ways Means Committee can request any individual's tax return and the law says the secretary of the Treasury "shall" turn it over.

and later on it ends with this....

Trump -- and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin -- have made clear they have zero plans to hand over the President's return to Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Richard Neal, D- Massachusetts. Republicans in Congress have made clear they will fight the attempt by Democrats to get Trump's tax returns -- insisting that the effort is entirely political and amounts to an invasion of privacy.

No mention of him "hiding" something, etc and let "unamed republicans" get the last word in....

No mention that the party of the Clinton impeachment who demanded and received Hillary's tax return from her time at the Rose Law office into the investigation into a real estate venture that they lost 30-70k dollars...

Don't assume just because "Tax returns" and "Trump" show up in a jsearch engine... that the coverage is critical...

And I bet the recent spike has been attributed to the recent change of the House leadership.

Like I stated before, just because it has Tax returns and trmp are mentioned in a article doesn't mean it was framed as a negative...

Unless you want to go through all 80 million and take oput exerpts from them to prove me wrong, but the first two articles just mention it, but not as a negative...

43. Here's a google search from 6/1/16-1/1/18

I hope this clarifies things, as it leaves out the "recent spike" you mention:

https://www.google.com/search?q=trump+tax+returns&rlz=1C1GCEU_enUS821US821&biw=1152&bih=606&source=lnt&tbs=cdr%3A1%2Ccd_min%3A6%2F1%2F2016%2Ccd_max%3A1%2F1%2F2018&tbm=

So yes, Trump's taxes have been in the news far, far more than Sanders' especially after Hillary became the nominee.

Trump's taxes were far more relevant to the election at that point than Senator Sanders.

92. The "corporate media" isn't on this site, "the powers that be" aren't on this site....

....not many "millionaires" are on this site, I doubt any "billionaires" are on this site, nor is the "republican party" or "D candidates that don't want competition". I don't understand your reference to "third way dnc".

This is a discussion about a candidate's tax returns. Many everyday Democrats want to see them, and now in 2019 there are no valid excuses why he can't or won't release them along with every other candidate. But no other candidates have balked at releasing theirs.

45. So why do you think that Senator Sanders hasn't yet put a stop to the

questions about when he will release his taxes, by releasing them?

Again, that is the simplest way to address the issue, and stop the questions.

He knows, as someone who ran for POTUS before, when it was brought up as an issue, that there would be continue to be questions about them if he ran again and still hadn't released them.

This is not an "attack" on him by the press.

94. Those were not full tax returns

sanders has not released his full tax returns. This has been fact checked https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/apr/06/bernie-s/bernie-sanders-has-released-few-tax-returns-compar/

The 2014 filings Sanders released consist of just the first two summary pages of his Form 1040 and the equivalent summary pages from his home-state Vermont tax form.

Why does this matter? Unlike most of the other candidates, Sanders has not released the succeeding pages -- the nitty gritty detail of things like charitable donations and other types of itemized deductions. For instance, Clinton’s release for tax year 2014 is 44 pages long, or more than 10 times the length of Sanders’ for the same year.
.....

Tax and disclosure experts we contacted agreed that Sanders’ current disclosures are weak by historical standards.

"If I filed the first two pages of my return with the IRS, it would not take long for them to ding me," said Kenneth A. Gross of the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and a specialist in political disclosure and ethics. "There is a lot of information on the pages following the cover pages."

Joseph J. Thorndike, the Tax Analysts official who heads the Tax History Project, agreed.

Sanders "has not, in fact, released his most recent tax return," Thorndike said. "He has released a portion of that return. The IRS would not accept a Form 1040 as a complete return and neither should voters. Also, it’s worth noting that Sanders has not released any portion of his older returns. … If Mitt Romney had tried to release an incomplete return in 2012, the media would never have accepted it."

Do you know if he filed jointly or separately from his wife?

OK, how would we even know that he filed jointly or separately from Jane without the returns? You just answered your own question there, didn't you?

If he is only getting paid from his office, then a 1040 would be all he would need to submit?

We know that he is getting income from books, in addition to "his office" because he's selling books on Amazon and at Walmart. And the 1040s summary from 2014 showed income from the Sierra Blanca nuclear waste dump, where Jane is on the board.

So what are you suggesting? What do you have other than smearing and stupid fucking emoji's?

You seem to be very, very upset with the suggestion that Senator Sanders could be held to the same transparency standards that POTUS candidates, especially Democratic candidates have met since Nixon? Several of the current 2020 Dem POTUS candidates have been forthcoming with personal financial information for years.

That sort of reation doesn't indicate confidence that one is confident that Senator Sanders is up to meeting that standard.

Just saying.

How much money he made is a private matter, and does not reflect on his qualifications running for president. If I was running for president, I would release my tax returns in a NY minute because My tax returns are simple, with standard deduction for last 55 years. It is usually 2 pages of form 1040 and 1 page of listing interest & dividends. In BS's case, he may have more complex situation and all that will do is give his opponents fodder to micro-analyze his taxes.

Then BS will be forced to spend all sorts of time clarifying his tax returns instead of explaining why his agenda is best for the country and to defeat Trump in general.

244. What "serious hypothesis" did I make?

Are you confusing me with someone else you are arguing with?

I stated that he could end the speculation by releasing them, and he isn't releasing them. That's a statement of fact.

You, however, are refusing to provide links to the polls you cited that support your hypothesis that there isn't much interest in Senator Sanders' taxes, so you can't answer the question if it was even a question on the poll.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence fallacy:

It asserts that a proposition is true because it has not yet been proven false or a proposition is false because it has not yet been proven true. This represents a type of false dichotomy in that it excludes the possibility that there may have been an insufficient investigation to prove that the proposition is either true or false. It also does not allow for the possibility that the answer is unknowable, only knowable in the future, or neither completely true nor completely false.

Certainly Senator Sanders believes that there is significant interest in his tax returns - why else would he have promised to release "10 years worth sooner than later" a month ago, when he could have just said what you have, that there isn't any interest in his taxes and that they are a private matter?

Any ideas on why he doesn't share your POV concerning this?

247. Since you brought up the google....

Tax returns contain vital information such as whether a candidate or a president has paid any taxes; what they own; what they’ve borrowed and from whom; whether they’ve made charitable contributions; whether they’ve taken advantage of tax loopholes or offshore tax shelters; and whether they have foreign bank accounts. Only a full release of tax returns can provide the public with clear information as to potential conflicts of interest and whether there could be potential entanglements with foreign governments and foreign businesses.

What we know about the current president’s finances are instructive as to the importance of tax returns. Last year, a stunning New York Times investigative report revealed that President Trump received the equivalent of $413 million in today’s dollars from his father but avoided paying millions of dollars in taxes through complex financial arrangements and questionable tax loopholes which experts say could constitute tax fraud. In light of these revelations, it’s more important than ever that this president release his tax returns and that Congress takes action to ensure future presidents and candidates do the same.

150. That's not true, they have, and it's really not relevant to this discussion.....

.....We're talking about OUR potential candidates releasing their income tax returns. Most of our candidates do so, Elizabeth Warren released 10 years' worth even before she became a candidate.

This candidate has been planning on running again next year since August 2016, he's had lots of time to prepare for this.

And at this point I'm really not interested in trump's income taxes.

227. BS should not be forced to release tax returns

If he cheated on taxes, it is the job of IRS to find that and penalize accordingly.
Because I consider taxes are private matter between him and the IRS.
If anyone violates tax laws, it can become public knowledge because IRS can publicize gross violations of tax law. We have seen ample examples of people being prosecuted for such.
I have seen no such news in media about BS's tax returns.

239. Who said anything about "forcing him" to release his taxes?

Clearly he hasn't been "forced" to release any. No one is forcing him to run for POTUS as a Demcorat, he chose to do that.

Because I consider taxes are private matter between him and the IRS.

POTUS candidacy comes with scrutiny that is not applicable to others. Personal financials can indicate where there might be a conflict of interest as POTUS, even if legal.

I assume you are also against Trump releasing his, because you "consider it to be a private matter?"

Democrats value transparency in candidates. We don't want something that might be a problem showing up out of the blue at the last minute, do we?

241. How high is publication of personal taxes on your list of priorities?

on my list it is close to the bottom. I care much more about affordable healthcare for all, higher taxes on top 5% incomes, cutting military spending, not starting foreign wars, clean water and air, and quality K-12 education for all.

May be on your priority list personal taxes and wealth of the candidate is very important. I have no problem with that. It is your choice.

246. Not going to answer the question? Who is "forcing" him to release his taxes?

Change the topic, and avoiding answering the question asked of you. It is your choice.

So, why do you think that Senator Sanders feels the need to release 10 years of his tax returns, if there is - as you claim, as per some polls you say you read - no real interest in them?

Why didn't he just say, "People aren't interested in them, and they are a private matter," if that is indeed true?

People are certainly interested in why Trump hasn't released his taxes.

Are there decades of precedent of candidates submitting their long form birt certificates? No there isn’t. The attack by the right on President Obama for a birth certificate (something with no precedent at all) is not equivalent to expecting BS to show his tax returns (decades of precedent).

So, rather than trying to run me down this false equivalency red herring, you have any answer? What other candidate other than 45 and BS has refused?

143. refused?

or hasn't released yet? The forbes article I posted previously stated that he did release his 2015 tax return....

False equivalence is a logical fallacy in which two completely opposing arguments appear to be logically equivalent when in fact they are not. This fallacy is categorized as a fallacy of inconsistency.

Sarcasm is "a sharp, bitter, or cutting expression or remark; a bitter gibe or taunt". Sarcasm may employ ambivalence, although sarcasm is not necessarily ironic. 146. Yes, refused. 1040+2 page summary is NOT a release.

There is refusal by word, and refusal by deed. No, BS has not openly refused. His actions through years of delay speak otherwise, so I'm sticking with "refused" as the appropriate action verb here. You may choose to ignore it, and you may even choose consider it completely unimportant. Others do.

Sorry, but a 2014 single year release of just the 1040 + 2 page summary don't qualify as a partial release in my book. Again, you are fully within your own right to disagree. By the way, it was 2014, not 2015.

But, let's talk about that one, and the bitty bit of info in it.. since you raised it:
Declared (but not detailed) income of $205,617. Congressional salary $174,000. Unspecified itemized deductions of $56,377. Paid an income tax rate of only 13.4%. This was several years after Jane's Burlington thing (don't worry, I'll follow the rules and not go into details on that here, but do know, tRumpublicons won't be so kind), so she wasn't working at that time (or if she was, I haven't found any reference to it on a search, but I'm okay if that's the variance). Where'd the extra $31,617 come from? Stocks? Bonds? A Russian Oligarch purchasing property from him at an inflated price? A side Job Jane was working? What are all the deductions about? So, no, many of us don't accept that lone, cherry-picked year in limited form as an actual release. this may very well be a HUGE, overblown nothing burger.. it may be very revealing. Hard to know, now, isn't it?

Now, on to your dear concerns about my grasp of fallacies.

The post I responded to was comparing the birther demands to these tax return demands. That, by the full definition IS a false equivalence, and for the VERY reasons I specified. The post I responded to may have been "sarcasm" as well, but my association of it as a false equivalence argument remains spot on.

Perhaps it is YOU who need to learn the difference?

I will say, it is most interesting that you bring into the conversation that 45 has likewise not released his tax returns. Are you equating things 45 does to things BS does? We may have some common ground after all! Are you implying that it's okay that BS didn't because 45 didn't? So sorry, but we'll have to agree to disagree. See, to me, it's equally unacceptable. Especially since both seem to have soooo many questions and media attention and public figures who've focused on them for those returns. What are THEY hiding??

149. No, he never released his 2015 tax return, never. He released his 2014 return....

At first it was just the 2-page 1040 form, which is essentially a summary sheet, very little detail - no sources of income, itemized deductions, etc.. After huge pushback and criticism, a month or two later he released five more pages.

He also refused to file his required FEC Personal Financial Disclosure form. Since we're defining term, by "refused" I mean that he filed for a 45-day extension, which was granted. Then approaching the new deadline he filed for another 45-day extension which was granted. That took him to about a week or two after the Convention, so he ultimately never filed that disclosure, claiming "I'm no longer a candidate".

Finally, you're using trump as the "standard" as to whether or not a Democrat should do something? Really????

A straw man is a form of argument and an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not presented by that opponent. One who engages in this fallacy is said to be "attacking a straw man."

This won't be like 2016 because he is one of the front-runners and will be far more vetted than last time.

Hillary couldn't get her economic message because she was dogged with the email question in every place she went and by every reporter who interviewed her.

The same might happen to Sanders and his economic message drowned out with a focus on his tax returns.

His policies and economic platform are much too important to be drowned out by trivial issues like tax returns.

He should release them and get it over with so he can move on.

166. Okay, just being a curmudgeon here. But we've GOT. TO. HAVE. THE. TAX. RETURNS. PERIOD!!!

GOT TO!!!

What a horrible precedent that - now, because trump never coughed up his, will in effect be cemented into place. When it's "already baked into the cake" - as the saying goes. Mitt Romney tried to, back in 2012. FINALLY relented and released his tax returns. But we've had solid NOs now for what likely will be TWO election cycles - 2016 AND 2020, where that bastard won't do it, unless he's forced to by either subpoena(s) or the Supreme Court he still thinks he owns now.

That trump has gotten away with it, and Bernie might try to also, makes me almost sick to my stomach. Now, future candidates will point to trump, or worse, "trump and Bernie. BOTH SIDES! BOTH SIDES!" And we'll be forever screwed after that. Nobody's gonna have to release their tax returns if Bernie tries to do it, too, AND succeeds. If he finally relents and does the right thing, then I give him a thumbs-up, and will be happy to say so. But if he stays stubborn, and locks that new precedent in place - (and you can imagine the yowls - "BOTH SIDES! BOTH SIDES!", then we're screwed. And he, personally, will have done far more long-term, long-range damage to our democracy than maybe even trump. If trump is able to obstruct this, then he becomes an anomaly in the history books. An asterisk. But if Bernie does the same thing, he becomes the mortar cementing, together in place, all the bricks of this alternate kind of "wall" that trump laid in place. No candidate from then on can argue that - "well BOTH SIDES BOTH SIDES do it! Look at trump! Look at Bernie!" and LOSE that argument. It becomes just another one of those silly/screwy/push the far edges things that candidates can, and increasingly WILL, do.

So you don't care might actually "own" that candidate? He/She owes money to that person/entity/lobbyist/pressure-group? What if he/she can be blackmailed or arm-twisted in the shadows to do something that benefits exclusively one entity whose best interests defy or violate the law or acceptable leadership standards - to the maybe-severe detriment of a majority of Americans, if not all the rest of us?

WE HAVE TO HAVE THE TAX RETURNS, BERNIE. Seriously. You owe it to yourself. You owe it to all the people who believe in you and trust you and whose hearts you've securely won - many of them staying loyal since the last round began. You're gonna hear way too much of "what's he trying to hide?" And it's rightfully going to upset you, especially if you're actually hiding nothing. (And no, I have not ruled that out.) So come on, Senator. Do the right thing.

Number 3, this is just a classic stall. There's something there he does not want primary voters to see because if they were really boring they would have been released yesterday.

Number 4, he says the reason he didn't release in 2016 is because he didn't win the primary. Is this the expectation for 2020? Maybe it comes down to a Clintonesque response: depends on the meaning of the word 'soon.'

What's truly boring is the endless excuse regarding the matter.

Sorry Senator Sanders, this isn't going away. Just give it up.

My prediction 1: He will release a few pages from each year except 2016 and his sycophants will be happy with it. Rest of us will continue to hound but it will fall on deaf ears.

My Prediction 2: a bunch of Tad Devine types are going over them (hopefully not with a bottle of white-out or a roll of white tape) to see how they could put a proverbial lipstick on the thing they want hidden from the American people.

When he releases them, no one can verify if they are real anyway. The only way is to look at depreciation numbers from year to year to year and see if the asset basis and depreciations match.

125. He and Jane have NO INTENTION of releasing them.

He and Jane have NO INTENTION of releasing them. If they were going to release ten years of their FULL tax returns, they would have done so already.

Jane and he want us to imagine that they're searching through unmarked shoeboxes of paperwork stored in their attic... only... this is not 1968. Neither he nor Jane are the technological Luddites that they're pretending to be.

There is NO "tweaking" or "adjusting" or "finalizing" or polishing that needs to be done. Fact of the matter is... if those tax returns were good enough for the IRS, then they are good enough to present to the American people.

The American people deserve to know where their money comes from, whether taxes were paid properly and promptly, where it's being saved (domestic or offshore), and where it's being invested.

Yet all we hear is excuse after excuse and delay upon delay. It looks fishy.

All these delays and excuses and broken promises... it certainly looks fishy.

What's the delay? If the tax returns were complete enough to submit to the IRS, then they are complete enough to release to the American voters. No "polishing" or "adjusting" or "clarifying" or "fixing-up" or "fine-tuning" is necessary.

Everyone should play by the same rules. No special favors for anyone! No exceptions.

The American people have the right to know whether or not anyone running to be the "Leader of the Free World" has properly paid his taxes. We have the right for an honest, forthcoming, and COMPLETE release of his FULL tax returns for a period of TEN years so that we can confirm where the candidate's money is coming from (including his/her spouse) and where the candidate is investing or saving (ie: domestic or off-shore) and what the candidate and his/her spouse claims as "deductibles" or other assets.

We need to see EVERY candidate's tax returns BEFORE the primaries... so that we'll know whether or not he or she is honest and has the integrity to be our party's nominee.

It's complete BS for any candidate to think they're entitled to DELAY and not release their tax returns until they win the nomination. All I'm saying is that the American voters deserve better than the peek-a-boo and hide-and-seek delays and excuses.

If there's nothing fishy going on, then there's NO reason for these delays from ANYONE. What's being hidden?

127. So this time, when he doesn't win the nomination

he won't release them? What a lame excuse. The purpose of releasing tax returns for any candidate, including even the Mighty Bernie, is so voters can use them to evaluate the candidate. Certainly they're not the only factor in evaluation, but they are important in order to see where the candidate is financially and possibly pinpoint any problems.

Bernie is hopelessly incoherent when discussing this issue. Why?

My guess? They're frantically refiling separately, so that Senator Sanders won't have to show his wife's assets. Considering what she probably earned on the Old Towne Media deal, they're probably quite rich now, and that might not be what Senator Sanders want out in public. If they refile separately, he can claim he wants to keep his wife's privacy, and hide their wealth at the same time. So, if he either never releases them, or he releases his separate filings, we can assume he's hiding something.

Kneecapping is a form of malicious wounding, often as torture, in which the victim is injured in the knee.

As a metaphor "kneecapping" suggests being limited by external imposition in a way that prevents full freedom of movement or utilization of resources.

I don't think so.

Second, a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters weren’t big fans of Clinton. So Stein campaigning on the idea that Clinton and Trump were similar made it harder for Clinton to win over those voters — even if Sanders voters didn’t vote for Stein, they may have stayed home out of disgust.

260. Washington Post-Enough with the excuses. It's time for Sanders to release his tax returns.

It has been more than a month since Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) told a national audience during a CNN town hall that he would release 10 years of his personal taxes “soon,” adding, “We have to do just a few little more things.” Five weeks later, it seems those “little” things still aren’t done; he told CBS on Sunday that “we have it all done and it’s just a question of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.”

Enough with the excuses, Senator. These sorts of shenanigans — and make no mistake, that’s exactly what they are at this point — both reduce the pressure on cowardly congressional Democrats to pursue President Trump’s personal and corporate tax returns, and endanger Democrats’ hopes of taking back the presidency in 2020. The progressive positions that Sanders champions, including Medicare-for-all, expanded Social Security and increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour, are much too important to both the future of our country and our own personal finances to risk them over tax returns.

Trump broke with decades of precedent in refusing to make his tax returns public when he was running for president. The result? Not only don’t we know our president’s net worth, we also have little idea how he earned his fortune or how he makes his money now. Minus his paperwork, it’s hard to determine whether Trump is using the White House as a just-in-time moneymaking opportunity, violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution, and/or even paying his fair share of taxes at all.
