Religious right declares 'defiant homosexual' Mayor Pete is 'biggest threat' in presidential race

And thus it starts.

Religious right declares ‘defiant homosexual’ Mayor Pete is ‘biggest threat’ in presidential race
By Alex Bollinger ·
Monday, April 15, 2019

A prominent Christian conservative has said that South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is the “biggest threat to religious liberty in history.”

Bryan Fischer is the Director of Issues Analysis for the SPLC designated anti-LGBTQ hate group American Family Association.

In a column on the far-right website OneNewsNow, he calls Buttigieg “an open and defiant homosexual” and says that it makes sense to reject him for his “sexual proclivities” – comparing being gay to being Donald Trump.

“We can certainly understand the left’s condemnation of President Trump for his sexual romps with porn stars 12 or 13 years ago,” Fischer writes. “This means, of course, that unless they are profoundly hypocritical, [progressives] will be able to understand our legitimate concerns about Buttigieg’s aberrant sexual conduct and what it means for his qualifications to become the leader of the Free World.”

Fischer is quite clear that his problem is with Buttigieg’s sexual orientation, not just his policies, but he also goes after his policies.

7. Bryan Fischer does not represent the religious right

This is what I hate about LGBTQ Nation - they are an outrage stirring paper. They don't frame things correctly.

Bryan Fischer is an extremist to most right wing voters. He doesn't speak for the religious right any more than the Mormon prophet speaks for American Christians.

11. I know, and I'm highly suspicious of how he's being pushed

by the same media outlets that were covering Trump non-stop. They also tried to turn Biden's innocent personal contact and hugs into something predatory while trying to minimize Beto. Biden and Beto are the only two I am fully confident can beat Trump. Democrats want to love and support Mayor Pete, in part because he happens to be gay and would be first gay candidate for president. Unfortunately that desire to be supportive may lead to some overlooking that the religious right already got their supreme court justice...they might not vote in as high numbers this time. Trump needs them to get out to vote, so propping up someone to rile them up plays right into his hand. I'm not in any way saying Pete isn't a good, smart, awesome person. I just think him as the nominee helps Trump. I don't want to help Trump.

18. No, that's not why I support Pete, and I don't think that's why he is being pushed.

I know people who work in PR. I can tell when someone has a good publicist, a well-planned media strategy, and has a personality the media can't resist.

Same considerations apply to Trump, but he has a different strategy.

Beto also has a good media strategy.

The media world looks very different when you know people whose sole mission is get their person in front of a camera.

25. +1. Even without the gay angle, anti-intellectualism has always been a powerful undercurrent

in American culture, which many on here seem to conveniently ignore. People also tend to assume that Donald Trump will follow civilized rules and norms in a debate. (We already know that facts and logic mean nothing to him or his supporters.)

Not only can both men defeat Trump, but I also think they have coattails and perhaps could bring Democratic Senators, something I am not sure Buttigieg can do. I want to be proven wrong, but I don't trust this electorate, especially with the religious right ready for bear after his truthful remarks regarding them.

...because nominating someone else will carry a bigger risk of defeat.

I understand that perspective. And at the same time, I think that particular brand of risk aversion isn’t the stuff from which inspiration springs. And Absent that inspiration, I can see a good likelihood for defeat.

30. As I said, that's not the only reason I don't think he can win

I have tried really hard to watch and listen to him. I don't dislike him at all. I just find him very difficult to pay attention to. I guess there isn't really a polite way to say it so I'll just say it. I find him to be boring. I had the same reaction to John Kerry and Al Gore. Both nice, smart guys and excellent candidates on paper but within 5 minutes of listening I was nodding off...and I WANTED to listen to him. So there's that. Keep in mind that I am an Independent that votes exclusively for Democrats at this point. Maybe that is allowing me to see something from a different perspective, I don't know. I also suspect that the media is pumping him up just to tear him apart, so I hope that those who like him so much be prepared for that. It's like a sport for the press.

IF Biden does not enter the race (almost zero chance of that) I do think Stacey will probably jump in though.

I do think Buttigieg can be a paradigm breaker in terms of shattering the rainbow ceiling, much like Obama was in terms of race. Gallup polls are tracking to hit around or over 80% by 2020 for acceptance of LGBTQ amongst voters. The vast, vast majority of that 20% against would vote against Jesus if he ran as a Democrat. Hell, in 2008, when President Obama won, it was only 55% and for gay marriage itself only 40% approval.

28. Gay issue aside, I think he might be the only one who really could beat Trump.

I think he's the only one that actually understands what is going on with Trump. Everyone thinks Trump is an idiot, but he's not. He's very ignorant and narcissistic, but that's different. Trump has spent his entire life studying one thing - how to manipulate media and he's become a world class expert.

Pete understands media too, and is himself an expert in media manipulation, which is how he was able to get so much attention in such a short amount of time. But he's not an ignoramus. He has studied the historical factors that brought Trump to power and the techniques for taking Trump down.

What makes you think he can't win?

32. I'll try to explain it as nicely as I can

Because I don't want to come across like I'm attacking him. I just want Democrats to beat Trump. That is my only motivation.

Everytime I try to listen to and watch him I lose interest very quickly. I don't find him all that engaging or charismatic and there is very little variation in his tone of voice. I wouldn't say straight up monotone, just kind of boring. As I just put in another reply I made it was the same reaction I had to John Kerry and Al Gore. He also comes across as really scripted to me and I just don't like that.

He is a nice guy, very smart and has a lot going for him. I think he would be a very good VP candidate and eventually president running against a different opponent...just not now and not Trump. There's just way too much at stake. I hope that clarifies better without coming off as being mean because that's not what I'm trying to do at all.

And the rest of it is just overall who I think is the best candidate. I love me some Joe Biden but I even think Beto is a better candidate than him. He is extremely appealing to people of color and it's showing in his crowds. That's crucial for winning.
