All they have done is close the polls. I think there is a very good chance that unless something happens the Ohio Primary is going to be held tomorrow with no polls open. I think that would mean they would have to certify the election tomorrow based on only the early and absentee vote.

Nobody in Ohio Government has the authority to change an election date without an act of the legislature or a judge. The judge has ruled that the election must proceed and there hasn't been an emergency session for the legislature. Now, the polls are being ordered closed based on a public health emergency. That, on its own, doesn't constitute a postponement of the election.

DeWine simply waited too long to try to postpone this election. He should have made that decision last week when Louisiana did it. This is a failure of governance.

They had weeks to vote early. We've known about this virus for over 2 months now...it ain't like it just sprung up yesterday outta the blue. Folks have been emptying shelves of food and supplies for quite some time now.

https://www.wksu.org/post/dewine-declares-state-emergency-after-ohio-confirms-3-cases-covid-19#stream/0

DeWine says Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R-Ohio) will roll out more information on how the state plans to prevent the spread of germs during the March 17 primary election. For example, DeWine says the 75-plus polling locations set in nursing homes will be moved to a different location. He encourages people to avoid large crowds by voting early at their county board of elections or by mail.

This was a week ago...why didn't DeWine ask to delay his OH's primary right then and there if he thought it was serious enough to declare a state of emergency?

If people are too stupid to plan ahead a little they're probably too stupid to be trusted with a vote, anyway. I submit Ohio's vote in 2016 as Exhibit A.

the same CDC who made the problem as bad as it is because they dragged their feet for over 2 months addressing the issue in the first place and totally screwed up their test kits so we could get an early handle on the situation. Anybody who relies on THIS CDC to figure out what they should or should not be doing is putting their life at risk.

Didn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out we had a biological storm headed our way and that there were things they could be doing to prepare for it. Like maybe voting early and crossing that item off their list before going to Walmart to pick up a little extra toilet paper?

I don't need that condescending HHS asswipe Azar or anybody else in Trump's incompetent administration to give us advice about what we ought or ought not to be doing. I'm still too busy following Krudlow's advice and "buying on the dips!". That ain't working out too good lately either...LOL.

Besides, it's all just a "hoax". The Fuhrer said so.

I'm just arguing with you a little because we ain't got no sports on TV to distract us a little and got nothing better to do.

In all seriousness, I understand your viewpoint and am torn between what the best course of action is. There are a few threads on this topic and without doing a detailed count opinions seem to be pretty much split.

Fuck Trump and his whole rotten administration for putting us in this spot in the first place. Pretty sure we can agree 100% with THAT, eh?

Defying court orders?

I think a lot of people are hypocrites. If this shit was pulled in a general election, you'd all be yelling bloody murder and rightfully so.

We just set precedent that it's perfectly reasonable to postpone an election, defying the law, if extreme circumstances call for it.

If you think this is the right move, you cannot complain if the Republicans try to pull this stunt in November for any reason.

DeWeasel looks mild-mannered, but has always been a highly partisan below the belt fighter (Clinton impeachment, dirty senate campaign against Sherrod Brown, etc). He had a case brought before a Franklin County (Columbus) court, using employees of Sec of State LaRose as plaintiffs late to-day. The judge followed the law, and rejected DeWeasel's move. Late in the evening, he has a state health officer, Amy Acton, to close the polls. That is really pulling one out of his ass. Well, Ohio has been a southern state for some time.

https://www.dispatch.com/news/20200316/coronavirus-ohio-supreme-court-allows-delay-to-primary-election
For real this time: There is no Ohio primary Tuesday.

Early Tuesday, the Ohio Supreme Court denied a legal challenge to the state delaying the primary. A candidate in Wood County filed the action alleging the delay of the primary violated election laws.

Only four justices participated in the ruling, which was issued without an opinion.

The ruling capped a chaotic 12 hours in which it appeared the election was off, back on, and then off again.
