Democratic Primaries

Saw it for the first time when I early voted in the primary. They have maybe a half dozen parking spots right up next to the building where voting took place (yes, there was a line this morning, quite long actually) and poll workers take the registration info and ballots right from the window of the car for handicapped voters. Great feature!

(8,088 posts)I would think that people who care enough to get out and vote early aren't the types who would park illegally in handicapped spots. Plus, aren't there poll workers helping them who can clearly see whether they have handicap permits in their vehicles?

(21,859 posts)I was out doing errands. I'm in MO, so perhaps the enforcement of these spots isn't the highest priority. Maybe where you're at, its different, if so, good.

(21,859 posts)there. I guess I'm cynical about it, being that I see it happen all of the time (illegal parking, and never an officer there to write a ticket).
It's a clever idea, perhaps they'll have a worker out there, at the handicapped parking stations (or a drive through perhaps), who'll enforce the handicapped criteria. In any event, this is a good thing for those of us who are distressed physically (hard to move around/get around), and it's perhaps easier for them to stay in the car while voting.

(6,095 posts)I don't know what the law was, but I remember ballots being brought to voters in their cars 50+ years ago, before ADA and such.
All this about concern about handicapped parking is foolish. NC polling places are well staffed and citizens would step in on their own.

(3,382 posts)My ballot comes in the mail.
I can vote at my kitchen table with the help of the voter's guide that came in the mail a week prior. I can take as long as I need without worrying about lines stretching forever.
I put it on my porch and the Socialist Post Office delivers it to the elections office.
I can go online to verify that my ballot was received.
Any disputed race can be re-counted with PAPER BALLOTS.
Oh..by the way...If I move, I am re-registered automatically when I go to the DMV.
This is not hard folks. Oregon and Washington eliminated polling places long ago.

(8,088 posts)General election
In the general election against Democratic Party nominee Dan McCready, Harris was the unofficial winner by 905 votes.[10] However, the Board of Elections refused to certify the results of the election. Dowless is accused of paying workers to illegally collect absentee ballots from voters.[5] and is considered a "person of interest" in the investigation over mishandled absentee ballots.[14] On February 4, the newly seated state elections board set an evidentiary hearing to begin on February 18.[15]
On the first day of the evidentiary hearing, state elections director Kim Strach said the evidence would show that "a coordinated, unlawful and substantially resourced absentee ballot scheme operated in the 2018 general election".[16] Lisa Britt, the daughter of Dowless's ex-wife as well as one of his employees, said Dowless and his associates had collected ballots from voters. She then testified that the ballots were kept at Dowless' home or office for several days or longer, and that operatives would fill in votes on parts or all of some ballots to favor Republican candidates in the election.[16] She also said they had forged some witness signatures and that they had followed the direction of Dowless to take steps to avoid detection, including controlling the color of the pens used for the witness signatures, signing a different person's name as a witness to avoid having the same person as witness to too many ballots, making sure to deliver only no more than nine ballots in each visit to the post office, and making sure to use post offices near where the voters lived.[16][13] Britt also said she had personally voted despite being on probation for a felony conviction and that she had taken advice from Dowless about how to do that.[13] Dowless himself was present at the hearing but refused to testify without being granted immunity from prosecution.[16]
Indictment
On February 27, 2019, Dowless was arrested after being indicted by a grand jury. He was charged with multiple counts related to illegal ballot handling and conspiracy in the 2016 and 2018 elections.[17][18] An additional four people who worked for him were also charged.[19]

(3,382 posts)Secure ballot boxes are located in libraries and drive up drop boxes. Any system can be "gamed", but vote by mail produces higher participation and eliminates the ability for political operatives to allocate polling resouces based on desired outcome.

(143,999 posts)HAVA (Help America Vote Act) requires this. I have been an election judge. There is one unit that can be taken out to the car for a disabled voter I have done three times over several elections. We need for disabled voters to know that this option is available

(43,865 posts)... someone is going to pull in, vote for their entire office, request no onions on three of them, no mayo on six of them, check the order, haggle on the pricing, then finally pull out 30 minutes later.
So much for a quick vote during your lunch break!
