'We Are Not That Stupid': Rev. Al Sharpton Says Black Voters Won't Be Fooled by Red-Baiting

Attacks on Sanders
"The civil rights movement always was targeted by those that would use the Red Scare. They accused Dr. King of being a communist. We've been down that road before."

https://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/02/26/we-are-not-stupid-rev-al-sharpton-says-black-voters-wont-be-fooled-red-baiting?fbclid=IwAR3Y-wYjv4Mqq9yorqajub8pFXQOsunUjoPejjpFhyQOo4qsr-ZPIOWwiZI

Rev. Al Sharpton said Wednesday that black voters in South Carolina, which holds its Democratic presidential primary on Saturday, will not be deceived by red-baiting attacks on Sen. Bernie Sanders because "we've been down that road before."

"Every major leader in the 60s they tried to call socialist or communist. Whatever you decide to do on Saturday, do not go by those that use the 'socialist' tag to try to separate us from what we need to do for this country."
—Rev. Al Sharpton

"The civil rights movement always was targeted by those that would use the Red Scare," Sharpton said at the South Carolina Ministers' Breakfast in North Charleston as he introduced the Vermont senator.

Sanders and five other Democratic presidential hopefuls attended the event, which was hosted by the National Action Network.

"They accused Dr. King of being a communist," Sharpton said. "Every major leader in the 60s they tried to call socialist or communist. Whatever you decide to do on Saturday, do not go by those that use the 'socialist' tag to try to separate us from what we need to do for this country... And we are not that stupid to allow you to tell us who is what."

"Those of us that had to fight for the right to vote need to use that vote in a fair way, fair to those that fought for it," added Sharpton, pointing to Sanders' involvement in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. "One of them that came south to fight for that and was arrested was the senator from the state of Vermont, Senator Bernie Sanders."

6. I know for a fact you don't know the difference between a socialist and a communist.

Thank God our great civil rights leaders know the difference and have warned us repeatedly what tactic they will use against those who will stand for us.

There were roadside billboards scattered throughout the South purporting to show King at a communist training camp. Hoover “cultivated King as the fearsome dark symbol of the latest 20th century threat to tranquility on Main Street America—succeeding immigrants, Depression gangsters, Nazis and communists.”

Dr. Kind a man who was often called a liar, a con man and a communist in his "Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?" King talked about them using their “morbid fear of Communism,” arguing that it prevented people from embracing a “revolutionary spirit and … declaring eternal opposition to poverty, racism, and militarism”

"Every major leader in the 60s they tried to call socialist or communist. Whatever you decide to do on Saturday, do not go by those that use the 'socialist' tag to try to separate us from what we need to do for this country."
—Rev. Al Sharpton

Please proceed with that nonsense that Bernie is a commie.

socialize almost a fifth of our economy just for starters. That will force doctors, nurses, hospital employees, dentists and even drug manufacturers to work for the government under a socialist scheme. It treats those workers as if they were a hive, existing only for the owners.

33. Truth is no wing's talking point

Rates for medicare, medicaid, ACA, VA, are negotiated rates and medicare rates were cut under ACA because the government was going to provide health insurance to many more people. The medicare rate is 17.4% below the average price according to that famous Yale "study." The proposed price for drugs is 40% below the current price according to the same supposed study. When they get all done with the cuts and then reduce the amount of health care needed, they only need to raise taxes by an insignificant 1.5 trillion or so per year to pay for the 180 million who already have non government paid health care.

"Those of us that had to fight for the right to vote need to use that vote in a fair way, fair to those that fought for it," added Sharpton, pointing to Sanders' involvement in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. "One of them that came south to fight for that and was arrested was the senator from the state of Vermont, Senator Bernie Sanders."

of his personal life, including his consistent history of activism, despite the efforts of his campaign staff who think it would help him.

But he did do a hell of a lot in Chicago. Like chaining himself to a bunch of people, mostly black women, to block bulldozers that were clearing space to install shitty mobile classrooms for black kids rather than allowing them into the white schools with vacant seats:

Perhaps Rev Al misspoke, or perhaps he knows more of the story than we do. I don't know.

44. Sanders NEVER "went south" to fight for civil rights, and he was never arrested for that....

Other than going to Washington in the summer of 1963, his entire civil right activity took place while he was a student at the University of Chicago for three years.

In a Mother Jones article, speaking about John Lewis and Sanders:

The Georgia congressman was a titan of the civil rights movement. A participant in the Freedom Rides organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), he went on to lead the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and still bears the scars he received at Selma. Sanders’ involvement was, by comparison, brief and localized, his sacrifices limited to one arrest for protesting and a bad GPA from neglecting his studies. But Sanders was, in his own right, an active participant in the movement during his three years at the University of Chicago.
