(20,709 posts)At one point it looked like she was the leader for the nomination, and then she started attacking Bernie nonsensically, like in this clip, and that's when she started dropping. I honestly don't know why she does it, they are both for the same progressive platform. I'm guessing it's some advisor or consultant's idea.
The problem is that she's a progressive, and so she needs to attract progressive voters, and progressive voters care about things like democracy rather than party insiders choosing the nominee.

He had to work within the system as it then existed, which involved attracting superdelegates to your side. He was working with a status quo-skewed system.
He never wanted superdelegates to be able to overturn the popular vote. Period. As soon as folks regrouped to hammer out revisions to the rules, he argued against superdelegate influence. Having them wait to vote until the second round was the most the party leaders would give him. Her suggestion that he is not wanting to play by rules he created is a damned lie. Damned because its an attack on his character, his integrity, not just an innocent misstatement. Notice how carefully she walks around the issue of him creating the rule. She knows shes lying.

(29,225 posts)The only reason he went along with trying to get superdelegates in 16 was because those were the partys rules. He never advocated for continuation of superdelegates, a fact implicitly supported by Weavers statement in the article you linked: Now we can argue about the merits of having superdelegates," Weaver continued, "but we do have them.

(8,311 posts)(I voted HRC in 2008 and 2016 primaries, so don't say I'm bashing her either. Truth is truth.)
Under the old rules, yes, you could appeal to the superdelegates. They have never answered that appeal and it generates bad press, but the appeal itself was within the rules.
Under the new rules, unless a candidate already has not just a plurality but a majority of pledged delegates, the superdelegates will sit out the first vote, and we will see the roll call of pledged delegates (some of whom may not be the pledged delegates we see now, as some states have provisions for the votes for candidates who have dropped out to go to others) only.
Now, depending on the plurality amount, I would think the superdelegates should decide to go with the winner -- especially if they're *just* short of the threshold for a majority on pledged delegates, which is potentially possible.
But it's also possible that isn't how it will go. We had 7 people at that last debate. Obvs people will drop out.
I think we are being very irresponsible to speculate now and try to say exactly how that second ballot should go, without knowing pledged delegate totals and delegates originally pledged to people who may later drop out.
We'll know more by mid-March. It's not that far away.

(4,918 posts)for their votes. It was part of the process.
The compromise process for 2020 is they only get to vote in 2nd ballot if there is no majority. It was Sanders hope that there would not be superdelegates, but the DNC wouldnt go for that, so this was the compromise position. Im sure no one expected the field to be so large.
To compare Sanders position in 2016 re super delegates to now is illogical. Its a good sound bite for people who dont understand the different systems but a very different thing.

(145,046 posts)I was at the Texas delegation breakfast when a group of sanders delegates marched in and demanded that we condemn Clinton and change our votes to sanders.
sanders spoke to the Texas delegation the next morning and his speech was again solely about himself. There was a mini-riot due to his delegates the prior morning and the only thing that sanders talked about was himself. sanders did nothing to deal with the fact that his delegates were out of control and did nothing to try to help Hillary Clinton win the general election.

(4,918 posts)required on the first ballot. So all candidates had to lobby for them to move the process forward to nomination.
Sanders wanted rules changed to eliminate super delegates. 2nd ballot was the compromise.
In 2016 Sanders did not lobby for super delegates in states that Clinton won with a good margin.
Sanders simply wanted the super delegates in the states that SANDERS WON to honor the votes of those states and have those super delegates in his column. In states were the voters were very close, he said if delegates thought he had a better chance of beating Frump to vote for him. Otherwise dont.
So basically Sanders position was pretty much what it is now. Voters should choose and if super delegates are needed in the mid, they should cast their vote for the candidate that won that state.
